Roles of Mobile Phone in Increasing Productivity of Malaysian Agro-Based Entrepreneurs

Abstract: Mobile phone and agriculture are two different things that can be integrated in so many ways. As other industries are manipulating the advantages of mobile phone so do the agriculture industry. The main objective of this study is to investigate the various purpose of mobile phone usage among the agro-entrepenuers while unleashing the contribution of this tool towards agro-based entreprenuers productivity. Apart from this, this study would like to discover any impacts of mobile phone usage on agro-entreprenuers productivity. This is a quantitative study where a developed instrument was used. A total of 365 respondents across Peninsular Malaysia were surveyed to gain the required data. Majority of the agro-based entreprenuers use mobile phone for seeking information related to their business activities while mobile phone has contributed towards their productivity in term of getting information needed and widening their networkings. Further analysis using independent t-test has confirmed that there was no significant difference in productivitiy for those who use mobile phone frequently and seldomly. It is recommended that responsible agencies such as Department of Agriculture and Malaysia and Communication and Multimedia Commission should play their role in promoting the advantages that mobile phone has in increasing agricultural productivity. Mobile web and phone line specifically for agriculture information should be created in doubling the function of mobile phone in agriculture.
Determinants of Information and Communication Technology Usage among Village Administrators in Malaysia Using Extended Technology Acceptance Model

Abstract: ICT projects in Malaysia have been one of the impetuses for achieving development in this country. Parallel with the ICT development in Malaysia, ICT usage among the Malaysian has increased significantly. Nonetheless, things are different in the rural areas where past studies have shown that ICT usage among the rural community in Malaysia is still discouraging. Albeit this fact are the same situation can be identified among the village administrators and what are the factors that impinge their ICT usage? Purportedly, as the leaders of the rural community they should use ICT in order to encourage the rural community to use ICT. This quantitative study used questionnaire to gather information. Through a multi-stage random sampling, a total of 240 village administrators from four states in Peninsular Malaysia have been selected as the respondents. In general, ICT has been used moderately among the village administrators. All of seven factors of Extended Technology Acceptance Model studied have been detected to be positively and significantly related with ICT usage while self-efficacy was identified as the main contributor towards ICT usage. A number of recommendations and discussions have been highlighted and expectantly it can aid the concern parties and policy makers in drawing plans for strengthening the ICT usage among the rural community leaders.
Assessment of Social Adaptation Capacity of Malaysian Fishermen to Climate Change

Abstract: Climate change has a tremendous impact on the livelihood of fishermen as it is poised to affect the sustainability of the fisheries industry. Thus, there is a need for the fisherfolk to possess adequate adaptation capacity to lessen the negative impact due to climate change. The main purpose of this study is to assess the level of social adaptation capacity of Malaysian fishermen to climate change and to seek the association between social adaptation capacity and selected socio-demographic factors. This is a quantitative study whereby data was collected from 300 registered fishermen in Malaysia. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling and data was obtained through a face-to-face interview. Based on the results gained, it showed that the respondents were having a very high level of social adaptation capacity. In terms of association, the study found that there is a significant difference between social adaptation capacity and the factors of age groups and income. The study recommends that the local fishermen need to be given adequate training and financial support so that they will be mentally and financially prepared to face the calamities of climate change.

Abstract: Work performance has been identified as the significant key for organizations to gain competitive advantage and superior productivity. Thus, this study intends to discover what exactly affect work performance among employees of government agriculture agencies in Malaysia. A total of 180 employees were selected as the respondents for this study. The respondents were chosen from ten government agriculture agencies in Malaysia. From the ANOVA and independent t-test conducted, type of residential house was found to have significant difference with work performance while Pearson Correlation employed indicated that age, working experience and gross monthly salary has significant and positive relationship with work performance.

Abstract: Agriculture interest in Malaysia has risen. This can be proved through government plans stated in The Ninth Malaysian Plan. One of the agriculture sectors that can be benefited through this plan is paddy industry. It is expected in 2010, the income generated by paddy industry will increase up to 988 million per year, thus depicts the potential it has. Paddy industry in The Ninth Malaysian Plan will be boosted through land rehabilitation and consolidation, increase number on R&D, paddy farmers will be exposed to more agriculture trainings, bigger credit allocation and better drainage and irrigation systems. In order to achieve this, the competency of agriculture extension officer is needed. Based on the previous studies, communication training is indeed important aspects that need to be intensified to strengthen the competency aspect of the agriculture extension officers. Previous studies also has show consistent findings that job performance, attitude, skills, knowledge, quality and quantity of works, use of technology and demography factors play important roles in cultivating competency to agriculture extension officers.
Perceived Usefulness of ICT Usage among JKKK Members in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Information and communication technology (ICT) is indeed an important tool to expose the rural community to development. Realizing the importance of ICT, a number of high impact ICT programs and projects have been introduced by the government. However, do the rural community especially their leaders which are the Village Development and Security Committee members (JKKK) use ICT? And more importantly do they perceive ICT as useful in their daily activities and tasks? This question brings us to the main objective of this paper which is to know the factors that influence the perceived usefulness towards ICT usage among the JKKK members in Peninsular Malaysia. Besides, this paper intends to investigate the level of perceived usefulness towards ICT usage among JKKK members and to reveal the most significant contributors for perceived usefulness towards ICT usage. This is a quantitative study whereby data were gathered using a questionnaire. Based on the multi stage random sampling, a total of 240 JKKK members have been selected as the respondents. Based on the analyses done, it can be concluded that respondents studied do have a high level of perceived usefulness towards ICT usage. All of the four factors studied have a positive and significant relationship towards ICT usage. Attitude was identified as the most significant contributor for perceived usefulness towards ICT usage while the four predictor variables explain about 60.0% of the variance/variation in perceived usefulness towards ICT usage.
Involvement in Agro-tourism Activities among Fishermen Community in Two Selected Desa Wawasan Nelayan Villages in Malaysia

Abstract: The agro-tourism activity in Desa Wawasan Nelayan is a new product of agro-tourism in Malaysia organized by Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia. Local community involvement is important to the success of this agro-tourism programme. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the level of involvement of Desa Wawasan Nelayan community in agro-tourism activities. The data of this study is obtained from a survey of two Desa Wawasan Nelayan villages. A total of 220respondents were randomly selected to answer the questionnaire and the data was analyzed using the SPSS software.Based on this study, the overall mean score for level of involvement in agro-tourism activities in both states were moderate. However, both villages were found to have the highest mean score on involvement in environmental conservation activities and about their concern on the cleanliness of their village.The study recommends that more efforts should be taken by Desa Wawasan Nelayan community to be involved in agro-tourism activities that will significantly impact the local economy, social, and environment, and as a result will empower and support the cohesion of the community.
The Credibility of Television in Disseminating Agricultural Information to Farmers in Malaysia

Abstract: Agriculture and television are two different things that can be combined in many ways. Television has been utilized to further intensify agricultural development in Malaysia. This study attempts to discover the credibility of television when disseminating agricultural information to Malaysian farmers. A total of 400 farmers from four states in Malaysia were chosen as the respondents in this study. It was found that farmers view television as a credible source for disseminating clear and understandable agricultural information. In addition, it was considered credible due to its ability to provide up-to-date, unbiased and factual agricultural information. However, television is seen as less credible in terms of providing information at the right time, and is unable to provide all the necessary information.

Abstract: The growing body of literature associated with information and communication technology within the rural community had examined numerous factors and interrelationships in order to gain a better understanding on the usage of computers among rural people. Rural administrators play a vital role to ensure information and communication technology is utilized regularly by the rural society. Thus it is significant to draw to attention to the factors affecting rural administrators’ information and communication technology usage and its implications to rural administrators profesional development strategies. This article would be of great help for future researchers who are searching for the path to further explain the determinants of information and communication technology acceptance and its utilization based on various models depicted in the literature. Pahang River Community Satisfaction towards Their Quality of Life: The Case of Community in Pekan, Pahang

Abstract: We examined the satisfaction of Pahang River community who live in Pekan towards certain aspects of their quality of life. What is the level of satisfaction of this community towards their quality of life; low, moderate or high? This is a quantitative study where questionnaire was used to gain the data needed. A total of 300 villagers had been selected as the respondents for this study. All of the respondents selected were the villagers that live along Pahang River in the area of Pekan, Pahang. SPPS was used to run the appropriate analyses. Overall, our analyses revealed that the Pahang River community living in Pekan have a moderate satisfaction towards their quality of life. However, further analysis employed, have indicated that Pahang River community in Pekan do have a high level of satisfaction towards four aspects of quality of life namely social involvement and relationship, safety at areas, home condition and education. Development in Pekan which includes the improvements along Pahang River need to continuously take place as it can have a huge impact on the Pekan community especially those who live along the Pahang River.
