Applying Information Technology to Financial Statement Analysis for Market Capitalization Prediction  [PDF]

Open Journal of Accounting (OJAcct) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojacct.2013.21001
Abstract: Determining which attributes may be employed for predicting the market capitalization of a business firm is a challenging task which may benefit from research intersecting principles of accounting and finance with information technology. In our approach, information technology in the form of decision trees and genetic algorithms is applied to fundamental financial statement data in order to support the decision making process for predicting the direction of the value of a company with value defined as the market capitalization. The decision process differs from year to year; however, the amount of variation is crucial to a successful decision making process. The research question posed is “how much variation occurs between years?” We hypothesize the amount of variation is smaller than half the number of financial statement attributes that may be employed in the decision making process. We develop a system which tests the amount of variation between years measured as the amount of generations required to reach a target level of fitness. The hypothesis is tested using data filtered from Compustat’s global database. The results support the research hypothesis and advance us toward answering the research question. The implications of this research are the possibility to improve the decision process when employing financial statement analysis as applied to the market capitalization and financial valuation of business firms.

Discutir essas tradu es constitui o objetivo do presente trabalho.

Der Datenschutzassistent als Hilfsmittel beim Erstellen eines ffentlichen Verfahrenverzeichnisses
Andreas Wimmer
E-Beratungsjournal , 2012,
Abstract: Privacy and data security are the basis for a trusting relationship between counsellor and client. Legal framework (in Germany) asks the operator of an online consultation platform to disclose the use of the data of the clients transparently. The “ ffentliches Verfahrensverzeichnis” (public process directory) should be the basis for this transparency. The preparation of this “Verfahrensverzeichnis” can be greatly facilitated by the use of an online tool like http://www.mein-datenschutzassistent.de.
ESG-persistence in Socially Responsible Mutual Funds
Maximilian Wimmer
Journal of Management and Sustainability , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/jms.v3n1p9
Abstract: This paper analyzes the persistence of environmental, social, and governance (ESG)-scores in socially responsible (SR) mutual funds. ESG-scores can be used as a measure for the level of social responsibility of an SR mutual fund. It is shown that ESG-scores persist for approximately two years. However, the persistence of the ESG-scores is terminated after approximately three years. This implies that value-driven investors of SR mutual funds who seek high-ESG investments cannot rely upon a long-term continuation of high ESG-scores and thus need to rebalance their portfolio from time to time. The lack of long-term persistence in the ESG-scores is caused by changes in the holdings of the SR mutual funds.
Efficient numerical computation of the Pfaffian for dense and banded skew-symmetric matrices
M. Wimmer
Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1145/2331130.2331138
Abstract: Computing the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix is a problem that arises in various fields of physics. Both computing the Pfaffian and a related problem, computing the canonical form of a skew-symmetric matrix under unitary congruence, can be solved easily once the skew-symmetric matrix has been reduced to skew-symmetric tridiagonal form. We develop efficient numerical methods for computing this tridiagonal form based on Gauss transformations, using a skew-symmetric, blocked form of the Parlett-Reid algorithm, or based on unitary transformations, using block Householder transformations and Givens rotations, that are applicable to dense and banded matrices, respectively. We also give a complete and fully optimized implementation of these algorithms in Fortran, and also provide Python, Matlab and Mathematica implementations for convenience. Finally, we apply these methods to compute the topological charge of a class D nanowire, and show numerically the equivalence of definitions based on the Hamiltonian and the scattering matrix.
An index for confined monopoles
Robert Wimmer
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: We compute the index and associated spectral density for fluctuation operators which are defined via the Lagrangian of N=2 SQCD in the background of non-abelian confined multimonopoles. To this end we generalize the standard index calculations of Callias and Weinberg to the case of asymptotically nontrivial backgrounds. The resulting index is determined by topological charges. We conjecture that this index counts one quarter of the dimension of the moduli space of confined multimonopoles.
Quantization of supersymmetric solitons
Robert Wimmer
Physics , 2001,
Abstract: We investigate the issue of regularization/renormalization in the presence of a nontrivial background in the case of 1+1-(supersymmetric) solitons. In particular we study and compare the commonly employed regularization methods (mode- energy/momentum- cutoff and derivative regularization). We show that the main point for a consistent regularization/renormalization is to find a relation between the ``cutoffs'' in the vacuum and the nontrivial sector so that they can be related in a consistent manner. For each scheme we give a principle to derive this relation and to perform calculations in a consistent way. These principles are simple and not restricted to two dimensions or supersymmetric theories.
