Fast Tracks: A Comparison of High Speed Rail in China, Europe and the United States  [PDF]

Abstract:

High speed rail systems have blossomed in technological advances since their debut in the 1960’s with the Japanese Shinkansen line. As miles upon miles of tracks increase around the world, bringing added mobility to travelers while decreasing emissions, various technologies are leading the way to a faster tomorrow. This article explores the differences in what countries around the world are using to supply the next generation of travel modes. This paper details the differences in technological implementations from Asia, Europe, and North America. High speed rail systems are far more developed in other countries, especially China, and have required substantial government investment. The United States, with limited HSR development, stands to benefit from the technological advances of others and learn from the economic impacts of HSR in other countries.

Abstract: Ni_(100-x)Mo_x(x=20,30,38)alloys have been synthesized by mechanical alloying.The structure evolution of powders in mechanical alloying process has been monitored by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses.The results show that the Ni_(62)Mo_(38)sample becomes partially amorphous after high energy ball milling,while the Ni_(80)Mo_(20)and Ni_(70)Mo_(30)become non-equilibrium nanocrystals.

Abstract: The effect of quenching temperature on the stress corrosion cracking of 30Cr3SiNiMoVultra-high strength steel in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution has been studied.The thresholdK_(ISCC) may continuously increase with the quenching temperature raised from 870 to 1200℃ .All of the fractures are intergranular.The analyses of the segregation along prior austeniticgrain boundaries,grain size and other microstructural factors reveal that the inereaseof K_(ISCC) is mainly due to the coarsening of prior austenitic grains.

Abstract: The effect of notch depth on the cryogenic fracture behavior has been studied using a low car- bon steel.An analysis was made for the fracture features at T_c~*(cryogenic brittleness-char- acteristic temperature)at which the facture load reaehes a valley value.Furthermore,accord- ing to the experimental results and engineering design practice,a concept of critical notch (crack)'size for cryogenic brittleness,a_c,as well as its limit value a_c~*,was put forward and recommended to be a basic characteristic parameter for controlling the brittleness. Mathematical derivation was carried out to give the expression of a_c and a_c~*,the reliability of which was verified by the modeling tests under both static and cyclic loading conditions.

Abstract: The mathematical models of the kinetics of the layer growth at different ion nitriding condi-tions of armco iron.steels 45,40Cr,42CrMo and 38CrMoAl have been established.Based onthese models the expression of nitrogen concentration profile of ion nitrided layers have beendeduced with profile simulating method.They areC_=C_(min)~+(P_4)/(ξ_1-x)+(P_5)/(ξ_(10)~2)(ξ_1-x)~2C_(γ′)=C_(min)~(γ′)+(P_1)/(ξ_(21))(ξ_2-x)+(P_2)/(ξ_(21)~2)(ξ_2-x)~2C_α=C_(min)~α+(C_(33))/(C_(33))/(ξ_(32))(ξ_3-x)~3Using these models,the kinetics of layer growth and the nitrogen concentration profile of ionnitrided layers were sinulated on Apple-Ⅱ computer.Results show that the simulated curvescoincide quite well with the experimental data.

Abstract: The corrosion fatigue crack growth and near-threshold characteristics of a medium strengthsteel HT60 were investigated using compact tension specimens exposed to synthetic sea water.The da/dN-△AK_(eff) relation in air can give a conservative estimation of da/dN-△K relationsin sea water. In the case of high R, however, crack growth acceleration at high △K regionsappears to be cantrolled by the stress-assisted dissolution. The crack opening stressinlensity factor K_(op) detected by the back-face-strain method is the result of crack surface incontact with the corrosion products and therefore an overestimated value of K_(op) at the cracktip is given.

Abstract: This paper deals with the cause of intergranular fracture occurred in the retained austenitic region in plasma carburized layer.The results show that the presence of retained austenite, which has a good effect on the impact toughness,has no relation to this embrittlement.Analy- sis by Auger electron spectroscopy shows that the impurities S and P segregate at the grain boundaries is the main reason of the intergranular embrittlement in carburized layer. However,the segregation of P and S can be removed by reheating and quenching treatment.

Abstract: The SiC_w/Al composite prepared by squeeze casting has a combination of superior room temperature specific strength and modulus together with excellent thermal properties.The extrusion can make an improvement on the strength and ductility of the composite from 582 MPa as squeeze casted up to 639 MPa,and on the transformation from isotropic to the anisotropic structure.This seems to be explained by the orientation of whiskers and the densification of dislocations in matrix.TEM observation indicates that the stacking fault is the usual planar defect on the SiC_w surface. composite;;SiC whisker;;Al alloy;;microstructure

Abstract: A special four-core fiber has been designed and demonstrated,in which the internal distance between the neighbor cores is smaller.The special designed four-core fiber can be used as optical grid pattern generator or fiber optic sensors.The effect of both bending and twisting on the far field of the four-core fiber end is discussed for low-coherence LD light source.Based on the superposition principle of point source interference and small hole diffraction of each individual single mode core of the four-core fiber,the far-field grid pattern are obtained.It is agreement with experimental results.In an addition,the theoretical model of the optical path accumulation and the polarization fading along the bending four-core fiber is also established.The related experimental result is given.
