Acute myocardial infarction and coronary vasospasm associated with the ingestion of cayenne pepper pills in a 25-year-old male

Abstract: For slimming, the use of weight loss pills flavored with Mexican pepper seeds is common among females. Originally called "La Jiao Shou Shen," cayenne (chili) pepper pills have been imported to Turkey from the Far East. China and Russia are the only countries in the world where chili pepper pills are sold. Capsules containing 400 and 600 mg of chili pepper are sold for weight loss; patches and gels are used for pain relief and slimming, respectively [1].Cayenne pepper pills contain pungent ingredients called capsaicinoids, and one of the active components of cayenne pepper is capsaicin [2]. Capsaicin accelerates energy expenditure and suppresses body fat accumulation by activating the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in animals and humans [3-6]. However, this substance is associated with cardiotoxicity, including coronary vasospasm, supraventricular tachycardia, and acute atrial fibrillation [1,7]. Capsaicin also prolongs the cardiac action potential in atrial and ventricular myocytes, an effect that is associated with the inhibition of potassium currents [8,9]. Coronary vasospasm and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) associated with the use of topical capsaicin patches to relieve back pain have been reported recently [7]. Here, we describe the first reported case of coronary vasospasm and AMI suspected of being caused by the use of cayenne pepper pills for slimming.A 25-year-old male was admitted to our emergency department complaining of severe chest pain 2 h after its onset. The pain radiated to the ulnar aspect of the patient's left arm, neck, and jaw. An electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated an ST-segment elevation of 7 mm in leads II, III, and aVF, consistent with an inferior wall AMI (Figure 1). A bedside transthoracic echocardiogram showed a non-dilated left ventricle with inferior hypokinesia, confirming a recent myocardial infarction. Abstract: Objective: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is a congenital or acquired anomaly characterized with localized or diffuse dilatations of coronary arteries. Paraoxonase (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDLC) associated antioxidant enzyme that prevents atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase-1 enzyme activity (SPA) in patients with CAE in comparison patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and normal coronary arteries. Methods: We have evaluated 44 patients with isolated IKAE, 40 cases with normal coronary arteries (NCA), 40 cases with critical CAD (CAD) and 40 cases with minimal CAD (MCAD) in this cross-sectional observational study. Demographic and biochemical data of patients were collected. SPA was determined spectrophotometrically. Among-group comparisons, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests were used; Bonferroni test was used for post-hoc analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis to determine the parameters associated with the SPA. Results: There were no differences among groups with regard to age, sex, presence of diabetes, hypertension and smoking (p>0.05 for all). The highest HDLC was detected in patients with NCA and lowest HDLC was detected in patients with CAD (respectively 52±15 mg/dL; 41±16 mg/d L, p=0.021). CAD and CAE groups were similar with respect to HDLC levels (p>0.05). The highest SPA level was detected in patients with NKA and the lowest SPA level was detected in patients with CAD (respectively 250.78±59.37U/L; 163.39±49.28 U/L, p=0.005). CAD and CAE groups were similar with respect to SPA levels (p>0.05). Conclusion: Both decreased SPA and decreased HDLC levels are closely related to the development of the CAE similar to CAD.
The 2011 Earthquake in Simav, Turkey and Seismic Damage to Reinforced Concrete Buildings

Abstract: Reinforced concrete buildings suffered significant damage in the region affected by the 29 May 2011 earthquake in Simav (Kutahya), Turkey. Typical building damage is classified and potential causes of damage are investigated. Reinforced concrete moment resisting frames with hollow brick infill walls are the most common structural system in and around the Simav city center while masonry construction is common in rural areas. Although the Simav earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.7 to 5.9, can be classified as a moderate earthquake, many buildings experienced damage varying from frequent diagonal cracking and brittle failure of infill walls to collapse or severe damage to frames due to short columns, soft stories or other reasons including insufficient or poor detailing of reinforcement. This study investigates and presents the seismicity of the region, characteristics of the measured ground motions, seismic load demands including response spectra, and damage mechanisms, potential causes and classification of observed damage in reinforced concrete buildings.
Inclusive SUSY searches at the LHC

Abstract: I summarize the status of the inclusive SUSY searches conducted by the ATLAS and CMS experiments using the 20 fb-1 of 8 TeV LHC data in the all inclusive, 0 lepton, >=1 lepton and >=2 lepton final states. Current searches show that data are consistent with the SM. The impact of this consistency was explored on a rich variety of SUSY scenarios and simplified models, examples of which I present here.

The synthesized compounds were then examined with respect to their substitution reactions with t-butylamine, diethylamine, cyclohexylamine, and trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane in acetonitrile. First Cultivation Trials of Lemon Basil (Ocimum basilicum var. citriodorum) in Turkey

Abstract: Lemon basil is grown as a culinary herb, used fresh and dried in floral arrangements, and potpourris. In this research we studied essential oil component and herb and oil yields of commercial lemon basil grown in Mediterranean region of Turkey. Lemon basil were cultivated under €ukurova conditions in Turkey, and could be harvested 3 times at the full-flowering. In our conditions, harvest number increased four providing that earlier sowing is performed. Total fresh leaf yield and total dried leaf yield were 2760 kg/da and 571.52 kg/da, respectively. Essential oil components in leaves and flowers were analyzed by GC. The maximum essential oil yield (0.71 %) was obtained at the I. harvest time from the dried flowers. Main component of essential oil was citral. The maximum citral (neral+geraniol) content (89.28 %) was determined at the II. harvest time
SOCIAL NETWORKING IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Undergraduate Students’ Views on Ning

Abstract: It was the aim of this study to investigate physical education undergraduate students’ views on the use of social networking, one of the most typical representations of Web 2.0 technologies. In order to do so, the researcher, who was the instructor of the class, entitled “Fair Play Education in Sport”, introduced Ning and its educational aspects to her students with a 50-minute presentation prior to the study. Following this, the students were encouraged to use this networking for 15 weeks in parallel with their class. During this application, the researcher helped the students to make the best use of Ning in educational settings. Upon the implementation, the researcher interviewed the students (n=19) in five groups on the basis of the questions prepared and piloted earlier. The interviews demonstrated that the students enjoyed using social networking in educational settings. The findings of the study were the following: Increasing student-student and teacher-student interaction, enhancing student motivation and classroom climate, sharing materials with the instructor and students, making use of students’ interests and needs, and making learning process more interesting and permanent. The research concluded that social networking could be used in PE classes effectively.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to demonstate how supply chain inventory problems can be handled by using the simulation approach and spreadsheets. Two different case studies are used to guide the operations managers in finding some practical solutions to the similar inventory problems that they may encounter. By this way, spreadsheet simulations are shown to be easily applicable to different operations scenarios. In the final section, future possibilities for applying the spreadsheet simulation to the more complex inventory systems are discussed.
Production of Aphanius mento (Heckel, 1843) under controlled conditions

Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to determine the adaptation capability to controlled conditions, reproductive behaviors, and production ofAphanius mentocaught from Kirkgoz Springs, Antalya. Fish material for broodstock were caught using fine mesh tulle net and bag net with 2.5mm mesh size. Twenty five female and 10 male breeding fish acclimated to experimental conditions in Aquarium Department Unit of Ministryof Food, Agriculture and Livestock Mediterranean Fisheries Research Production and Training Institute were spawned by providing egg collectorsto the tank. Aphanius mentoeggs were spherical, transparent and sticky. Examination with the microscope revealed that the eggs were fullof pale yellow egg yolk with 7-8 lipid droplets and had fibrous sticking filaments on the surface. The average egg diameter was 1.59±0.50 mm(n=8). Hatching were observed at 11th day at 22.5±1.0oC water temperature whereas at 8th day at 27.0±0.45oC. Total length of newly hatchedlarvae was 5.1±0.07 mm, and swimming were competed at 4th day. Average size of one-week larvae was 5.6±0.2 mm. At this stage fins werefully developed, the larvae were able to swim freely and take exogenous food. Mean length of the fish was 2.7±0.2 cm on 7th month and a juvenilefish had an appearance of morphologically mature fish.

Abstract: The study objectives are to 1) provide information regarding the use and benefits of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems in manufacturing environments, and 2) review the literature related to design, modeling and simulation of AGV systems. We classify the tools utilized in design problems of AGV systems as analytical and simulation-based tools. Then, give examples of both categories from related literature.
