Towards Strengthening the Relationship between Trade Unions and University Management in Nigeria

Abstract: Universities are a repository of the most specialised and skilled manpowers. They are places where the manpower needs of a nation are nurtured. However, the management of these institutions is becoming complex nowadays because of the ravaging conflicts between the universities management and the various trade unions in the system. This paper therefore examined the various causes of conflicts between the trade unions and the university managements, which include: poor funding of the system, poor condition of service, and bad leadership style of university administrators. Recommendations were made on how to strengthen the relationship between the unions and the university authorities. They are proper funding and judicious uses of the fund allocated; better condition of service; principle of democratic governance; conducive teaching-learning environment and better information channel.

Each of these targets can be considered a potential biomarker that serves as a risk assessment tool and/or a biological predictor of prognosis and treatment outcome. For example, the risk of developing breast cancer in a woman who has inherited a deleterious breast cancer antigen (BRCA)1 mutation is five times that of a woman in the general population.1 When cells are damaged by chemotherapy, DNA damages are often repaired by the BRCA pathway. In cells that are deficient in BRCA functionality, an alternative pathway such as the base excision repair pathway is utilized. This pathway is dependent on poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) being fully functional.2 Therefore, BRCA1-deficient cancer cells are exquisitely sensitive to the combination of PARP inhibitor and chemotherapy.3,4 In this case, BRCA1 serves as a biomarker for both risk of developing breast cancer and favorable outcome to certain treatments. Abstract: 本文用201种禾本科植物幼苗的60个形态和解剖性状进行了聚类分析,将禾本科植物分为四个大类(一级聚合单位)—狐茅类(Festucoid)、黍类(Panicoid),竹类(Bambusoid)和画眉草类(Eragrostidoid)。这四类基本上与分类系统中的亚科相吻合,只是芦竹亚科植物的幼苗分散聚到了其它类中。推测芦竹亚科是一个比较原始的类群,狐茅亚科、黍亚科和画眉草亚科可能是在芦竹亚科的基础上进化而来的。 除个别种外,大多数同属的种在较低的聚合水平上聚在一起,超族在亚聚合单位中基本上能够反映出来。 研究证明禾本科植物的幼苗性状在禾本科植物分类中具有重要的分类学意义。

Abstract: 根据类公式化OODB中的查询,可检索某些满足类属性谓词的实例。OO数据模型的类层次概念允许依据类和实例,隐式地表达具有不同抽象级的查询结果。Shum和MuntzSM88]提出了基于DB分类的隐式表达方法,其算法在查询结果长度上是最佳的,但不够清晰。本文提出一种易理解的唯一相关回答。为了以自顶向下方式有效地获得并操纵相关回答,借助访问DB的查询算子,公式化用户查询并对标准查询算子进行重定义。这种相关回答的抽象表示,对处理复杂信息十分有用。

Abstract: This paper considers communications and network systems whose properties are characterized by the gaps of the leading eigenvalues of for a matrix . It is shown that a sufficient and necessary condition for a large eigen-gap is that is a "hub" matrix in the sense that it has dominant columns. Some applications of this hub theory in multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems are presented.
Effects of Digging Substrate on Growth and Fur in Blue Versus Shadow Type of Alopex lagopus

Abstract: Our study sought to establish the extent to which digging substrate in the cage affects growth performance and fur properties in farmed foxes (Alopex lagopus) of the shadow white and blue colour types. The plates were on either the wall or the floor; the sandbox was always on the floor. A standard cage without any digging substrate was used as a control. There were 20 foxes in each group (one male and one female per cage). The cage setups were as follows: 1) a standard cage (105 cm long × 115 cm wide × 70 cm high) without digging substrates, which housed the control group; 2) a standard cage (105 cm long × 115 cm wide × 70 cm high) with a solid metal plate (210 × 297 mm) on the wall for digging and scratching; 3) a standard cage (105 cm long × 115 cm wide × 70 cm high) with a solid metal plate (210 × 297 mm) on the floor for digging and scratching; and 4) a standard cage (105 cm long × 115 cm wide × 70 cm high) with a metal sandbox for digging and scratching (80 × 40 × 14 cm, L×W×H). The sandbox had a 10 cm layer of sand (ca. 25 kg, particle size 0-18 mm) on the bottom. All animals grew well and reached normal body weights. No significant growth differences were found between blue and shadow types within the groups. Furthermore, skin length did not differ between colour types or between groups. Skin weight, on the other hand, was heavier in the blue than in the shadow type in the plate floor groups. No differences were recorded in the other groups. Fur quality was poorest in the blue type of the standard group and best in the shadow type of the plate wall group. Cover and mass were also best in the shadow type of the plate wall group. Furs were dirtiest in the sandbox groups, irrespective of colour type. Our findings tempt us to conclude that body growth is highly affected by digging substrate and that a sandbox in the cage causes the dirtiest fur and may, therefore, be avoided in farming practice.Key Words: Alopex lagopus, digging substrate, fur properties, growth performance, colour type
An Anthological Review of Research Utilizing MontyLingua, a Python-Based End-to-End Text Processor

Abstract: MontyLingua, an integral part of ConceptNet which is currently the largest commonsense knowledge base, is an English text processor developed using Python programming language in MIT Media Lab. The main feature of MontyLingua is the coverage for all aspects of English text processing from raw input text to semantic meanings and summary generation, yet each component in MontyLingua is loosely-coupled to each other at the architectural and code level, which enabled individual components to be used independently or substituted. However, there has been no review exploring the role of MontyLingua in recent research work utilizing it. This paper aims to review the use of and roles played by MontyLingua and its components in research work published in 19 articles between October 2004 and August 2006. We had observed a diversified use of MontyLingua in many different areas, both generic and domain-specific. Although the use of text summarizing component had not been observe, we are optimistic that it will have a crucial role in managing the current trend of information overload in future research.
Firebird Database Backup by Serialized Database Table Dump

Abstract: This paper presents a simple data dump and load utility for Firebird databases which mimics mysqldump in MySQL. This utility, fb_dump and fb_load, for dumping and loading respectively, retrieves each database table using kinterbasdb and serializes the data using marshal module. This utility has two advantages over the standard Firebird database backup utility, gbak. Firstly, it is able to backup and restore single database tables which might help to recover corrupted databases. Secondly, the output is in text-coded format (from marshal module) making it more resilient than a compressed text backup, as in the case of using gbak.
