Seasonal and spatial distribution of Brachionus (Pallas, 1966; Eurotatoria: Monogonanta: Brachionidae), a bioindicator of eutrophication in lake El-Manzalah, Egypt
HRA. Mola
Biology and Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: Rotifers, especially Brachionus sp., are the major component of zooplankton in Egyptian eutrophic lakes. Thesespecies play an important role as bioindicator in these aquatic environments. In present study, twenty-fourzooplankton samples were collected and investigated along six stations of southeastern sector of the lake fromAugust 2009 to May 2010. Brachionus sp. were the most abundant species constituting 74.8 % of the total rotifersand 59.87 % of the total zooplankton. It was represented by 7 species which are; Brachionus angularis, B.budapestinensis, B. calyciflorus, B. caudatus, B. plicatilis, B. urceolaris and B. quadridentatus. The highestabundance of Brachionus sp. was recorded at Ibn Salam Station (4227493 Org./m3) during summer due to the effectof water discharge rich in nutrients through 3 main drains in this area while the lowest abundance was recorded at El-Qaboti Station (333 Org./m3) during winter. Brachionus angularis and B. calyciflorus formed collectively (92.16 % ofthe total Brachionus sp.). The presence of these species of Brachionus in high composition indicates eutrophicationof Lake El-Manzalah.
Towards Cloud Management by Autonomic Manager Collaboration  [PDF]

Int'l J. of Communications, Network and System Sciences (IJCNS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ijcns.2011.432097
Abstract: The management of clouds comprised of hundreds of hosts and virtual machines present challenging problems to administrators in ensuring that performance agreements are met and that resources are efficiently utilized. Automated approaches can help in managing such environments. Autonomic managers using policy-based management can provide a useful approach to such automation. We outline how collections of collaborating autonomic managers in cloud can be a step towards better management of clouds. We describe how a hierarchy of policy-based autonomic managers can collaborate using messages. The messages and when to communicate is inferred automatically from the policies given to the managers. We evaluate the approach via a prototype inspired by a cloud virtualized infrastructure and show how collaboration between managers in a hierarchy can improve the response time of a web server and avoid service level agreement violations. Results of three different scenarios shows the importance of collaboration between managers at different authority levels and how this collaboration can help to increase efficiency of current infrastructures.
DIGITAL COMPETENCIES OF CHEMISTRY TEACHERS IN SLOVAKIA / Digitálne kompetencie u ite ov chémie na Slovensku

Technológia vzdelávania , 2011,
Abstract: This article presents some of the research results of digital competencies of chemistry teachers in the National project Modernization of the educational process in secondary schools“. We participated in development of the content in the third module of chemistry teacher education in this project. After first year of teacher training, we implemented an experimental assessment of learning module to ascertain competencies required for work with digital content and digital technologies (DT) and to determine the state of perception, acquisition and development of digital skills of chemistry teachers. The main objective of the research was to verify digital skills of chemistry teachers in the classroom before and after training within the project. Chemistry teachers participated in research through self-evaluation questionnaire. Presented research results indicate that the content in module 3 – Application of DT in chemistry teaching at secondary schools was built well, since it supports the development of digital competencies and confidence of teachers in the use of DT as well as development of new teaching skills with the support of DT. It is valuable that teachers are aware of the importance and the need to develop skills for learning with the support of DT. Their self-confidence has improved by 1 to 1.5 point in the assessment scale as the result of training within the project. On the other side, the system of active teacher with the support of DT is nowadays still preferred over the system based on student activity in the learning process with the use of DT, where the teacher has to manage the learning process directed to personalize learning by using DT – education tailored to the needs of each pupil“.
Fabrication and Microstructure of Layers Containing Intermetallic Phases on Magnesium
R. Mola
Archives of Foundry Engineering , 2013,
Abstract: Al- and Al/Zn-enriched layers containing intermetallic phases were deposited on the Mg substrate by heating the Mg specimens in contactwith the powdered materials in a vacuum furnace. The Al-enriched surface layers were produced using Al powder, whereas the Al/Znenriched layers were obtained from an 80 wt.% Al + 20 wt.% Zn powder mixture. The microstructure and composition of the layers wereanalyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the Al-enriched layercomprised an Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of Al in Mg. The layer obtained from the Al+Zn powder mixture wascomposed of Mg-Al-Zn intermetalic phases and a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg. Adding 20% of Zn into the Al powder resulted in theformation of a considerably thicker layer. Moreover, the hardness of the surface layers was much higher than that of the Mg substrate.
Convergence to equilibria for a three-dimensional conserved phase-field system with memory

Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2008,
Abstract: We consider a conserved phase-field system with thermal memory on a tridimensional bounded domain. Assuming that the nonlinearity is real analytic, we use a Lojasiewicz-Simon type inequality to study the convergence to steady states of single trajectories. We also give an estimate of the convergence rate.
Overwintering of Eight Toothed Spruce Bark Beetle (Ips typographus) in Spruce Forests of North Velebit

Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering , 2011,
Abstract: The eight toothed spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) plays an important role in spruce forests of Croatia, in the same way as it does in the rest of Europe wherever spruce grows. The size and intensity of its outbreaks is considerably lower though, and compared with the majority of countries scoring huge timber losses, Croatian forestry in general is much less affected, both economically and ecologically, by this bark beetle. Mixed tree species composition, natural origin and uneven age structure of spruce stands surely adds to the less pronounced and sporadic outbreaks in the Croatian territory. The recent rise of bark beetle populations in general, and above than average attacks of this bark beetle in the central parts of Dinaric mountain chain, initiated some new, targeted research projects. In the northern part of the Velebit Mountain, in the spring of 2008, a field trial was set up aimed at investigating the overwintering strategy of the eight toothed spruce bark beetle on two experimental plots in different elevation zones. The core idea was to test the already described phenomenon of different hibernation niche choice within the northern dwelling populations (predominantly choosing forest litter) and southern populations (staying within their growing niche, under the spruce bark). The general objective of the research and the expected outcomes fall within the area of sanitation felling and mechanical procedures in a wider concept of integrated bark beetle suppression tactics that could be used by Croatian foresters. Each experimental plot was characterized by the freshly attacked group of spruce trees (last summer – second generation of spruce bark beetle). The aerial distance between the lower tirova a plot (1080 meters a.s.l.) and the higher Zavi an plot (1404 meters a.s.l.) was 17.5 kilometers ensuring that the two were well separated in space. The altitudinal difference of 324 meters might not seem striking but climatic conditions in the area of experimental plots are quite different, notably in terms of temperature profile and height and duration of snow cover. On each experimental plot a set of forest floor eclectors was set up within the vicinity of standing spruces hit by the last summer bark beetle attack. Also, on each of the plots, one tree–mounted cylindrical eclector was wrapped around the lower tree trunk of a standing spruce, collecting beetles emerging from the bark (details in Table 1, Fig. 2). In the close vicinity of the plots a pheromone trap was installed (commonly used Theysohn type trap baited with Pheroprax aggregati
SUPPLEMENTAL STOCKING OF EYED BROWN TROUT EGGS (SALMO TRUTTA M. FARIO L., 1758) WITH THE USE OF WHITLOCK–VIBERT BOXES

Ribarstvo : Croatian Journal of Fisheries , 2006,
Abstract: The research was carried out in the Upper Kupa valley at three different locations–brooks, Le ni ki potok, Le ni ki jarak and Gr ac. During the research efficiency of stocking with Whitlock Vibert boxes were studied. During the three month research period (January 2005 — April 2005) 4000 eyed brown trout eggs from 3 different sources were placed in 14 Whitlock–Vibert boxes. During the research resultes from Gr ac brook were excluded from the final analysis of efficiency of Whitlock–Vibert boxes because of technical problems, so resultes for the final analysis were used from 2800 eyed brown trout eggs that were placed in 10 Whitlock–Vibert boxes where 99,53% of the eggs had successfully hatched. The results have shown that the use of Whitlock–Vibert boxes with eyed brown trout eggs is prosperous and that the efficiency of Whitlock–Vibert boxes depends on the quality of eggs and choice of box burial in the stream bed. The research was conducted in the context of the regular management obligations of the fishing right owner on the research area.
