Elevated Plasma Levels but Decreased Platelet-Associated Expression of LIGHT in Patients with Acute Atherothrombotic Stroke  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: As a member of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily (TNFSF), LIGHT (TNFSF14) is expressed by a variety of immune cells and exists in membrane-bound and soluble forms. Recently, LIGHT was found to be associated with platelets and released upon activation. Activation of endothelia cells by recombinant LIGHT protein results in pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic changes. Several studies have reported increased plasma levels of LIGHT in patients with stroke and cardiovascular diseases. However, the form-associated roles of LIGHT in ischemic atherosclerotic stroke remain unclear. Mater?als and Methods: In this study, the platelet LIGHT expression and soluble LIGHT protein were analyzed by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in peripheral blood of patients with acute ischemic atherosclerotic stroke, asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS) and normal controls. RESULTS: During the initial 24 h after onset, the stroke patients had decreased LIGHT expression on their platelets (5.9% ± 4.9%) and increased plasma LIGHT levels (36.1 ± 21.0 pg/ml) as compared with normal controls (9.5% ± 3.0%, p < 0.05; 20.4 ± 13.4 pg/ml, p < 0.05). Moreover, the platelet LIGHT expression correlated with total plaque area in the stroke patients (r = 0.4572, p = 0.0247). Internal Control, Life Cycle and Earnings Quality —An Empirical Analysis from Chinese Market  [PDF]

Abstract: Whether internal controls can effectively constrain earnings management, which is a hot topic in recent years. I investigate the impact of internal control on earnings quality based on a life cycle perspective using data of listed companies of China’s market from 2010-2013. The empirical findings indicate that high quality internal control can suppress accrual earnings management and real earnings management (except for discretionary expenses manipulating earnings management) effectively, whilst in different life cycle stages (LCSs), the relation between internal control quality and accounting earnings quality (accrual quality and real earnings quality) is different. For the accrual quality aspect, in mature LCS, internal control quality and accrual quality is positively correlated. In growth or decline LCS, the relation between internal quality and accrual quality is not significant. For the real earnings quality aspect, in decline LCS, high quality internal control can improve real earnings quality; in growth LCS or mature LCS, the relation is just the opposite.

Abstract: Knowledge is the organization’s most important strategic resource that can provide organizations with a sustainable competitive advantage; at the same time, knowledge management depends on knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is affected by multi-level factors: Organizational level, team level and individual level factors; some will promote knowledge sharing, and some will have a negative impact. Therefore, this paper reviews the concepts of knowledge sharing and the related factors that affect knowledge sharing. Finally, this paper proposes future research directions about knowledge sharing.
Model development and optimization on the combined algal growth inhibition effects of two allelochemicals

Abstract: Based on the separate algal inhibition effects of two allelochemicals, pyrogallic and linolenic acid, the joint algal growth inhibition effects of varying combinations of these two allelochemicals were studied. The mathematical model of algal growth inhibition by combined effects of the two allelochemicals was established by micro-element analysis and relevant partial differential equation, based on the dynamics and characteristics of algal density during experiment. The law of algal density changing with time can be effectively analysed and forecast by this model when joint pyrogallic and linolenic acid in certain concentration range used to inhibit algal growth. Based on this model, the half effective concentration (EC50) and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of combined algal growth inhibition effect of allelochemicals, the optimal combination of concentration for joint algal growth inhibition, as well as the optimal combination of concentration for joint algal growth inhibition in the context of cost control at different time points can be projected. The finding of the present study was of theoretical significance and practical value for guiding the preparation of efficient and economical joint biological algal growth inhibitory agents.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel method for fast face recognition called L1/2 Regularized Sparse Representation using Hierarchical Feature Selection (HSR). By employing hierarchical feature selection, we can compress the scale and dimension of global dictionary, which directly contributes to the decrease of computational cost in sparse representation that our approach is strongly rooted in. It consists of Gabor wavelets and Extreme Learning Machine Auto-Encoder (ELM-AE) hierarchically. For Gabor wavelets part, local features can be extracted at multiple scales and orientations to form Gabor-feature based image, which in turn improves the recognition rate. Besides, in the presence of occluded face image, the scale of Gabor-feature based global dictionary can be compressed accordingly because redundancies exist in Gabor-feature based occlusion dictionary. For ELM-AE part, the dimension of Gabor-feature based global dictionary can be compressed because high-dimensional face images can be rapidly represented by low-dimensional feature. By introducing L1/2 regularization, our approach can produce sparser and more robust representation compared to regularized Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC), which also contributes to the decrease of the computational cost in sparse representation. In comparison with related work such as SRC and Gabor-feature based SRC (GSRC), experimental results on a variety of face databases demonstrate the great advantage of our method for computational cost. Moreover, we also achieve approximate or even better recognition rate.

Abstract: An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) based triplexer has many advantages including small size and low cost.The commonly used wavelengths in passive optical network (PON) are 1310nm,1490nm and 1550nm,according to ITU G.983 standard.Because of the wide spectral range and very unequal channel spacings,a conventional AWG design cannot produce a satisfactory result.In this paper,a novel triplexer design based on AWG is presented.The spectral periodicity of the grating is utilized in the design so that the first wavelength works at a different diffraction order,and it is mapped to a wavelength that is approximately in the middle of the second and third wavelength channels.This results in a reduced free spectral range (FSR) requirement and almost equal distances between the input/output waveguides.Consequently,the AWG can operate at a higher diffraction order with a smaller device size,compared to the one designed by conventional methods.

Abstract: Closed form expressions for the PDF and MGF of the harmonic mean of two independent exponential variates are cited and derived, and then applied to study the performance of cellular multi-node and dual-hop cooperative communication systems with non-regenerative relays over flat Rayleigh fading channels. We derive the probability density function (PDF) and asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) expression with MRC scheme. Then we use Matlab to simulate the performance.
Regional Geochemical Characteristics and Influence Factors of Soil Elements in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, China  [PDF]

Abstract: Soil heavy metal pollution is one of the main environmental problems in Pearl River Delta EconomicZone of China. Based on multi-purpose regional geochemical survey, regional eco-geochemical assessment, local eco-geochemical assessment and comprehensive appraisal, the eco-geochemical survey and assessment in Pearl River Delta Economic Zone of 41,698 km2were completed. Samples from soils were collected in accordance with the two-layer grid method. Totally 54 elements and indicators for soils were determined. Compared to deep soils, the sampled surface soils are enriched in OrgC, N, P, Cd, SHg, Ag, B, Au, S and poor with As, Ni, I, Co, Cr, V, MgO, Sc, Al2O3, Fe2O3etc. The characteristics of geochemical reference value of element in soil that inherited soil parent material and regional elements combined features reflected that the elements enriched in the soil was interrelated with acid rock, sandstone and shale. The spatial distribution characteristics of element regional geochemistry were conditional by regional environmental geological conditionsand effected by human activities. Role of Character Strengths and Stress in Psychological Symptoms among Chinese Secondary Vocational School Students  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Character strengths are important psychology resources, which affect the academic and social development of students at secondary vocational schools. Purpose: We aimed to clarify the relationship between character strengths, psychological stress, and psychological symptoms among these students from a positive psychological perspective. By focusing on virtues and strengths, we suggest improvements to school education and family upbringing. Sample: A total of 282 secondary vocational school students were recruited. Design and Method: Students were asked to complete the Chinese Virtues Questionnaire, Life Stress Rating Scale, and Symptom Checklist-90. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 19.0. Results: Regression analyses indicated that the interaction between relationship strengths and family stress explained 45% of the variance in psychological symptoms. This study clarified the positive role of character strengths in stressful situations. Thus, helping secondary vocational school students recognize and use their strengths is conducive to improving their health. Conclusion: Our results should also help teachers and parents adopt a strengths perspective, which might encourage students to explore and develop their strengths.
