Characteristics of seagrass seed and restoration of seagrass bed

Abstract: Reported seagrass bed losses have led to increased awareness of the need for seagrass bed restoration, and seeds have potential for this restoration. In this paper, we systematically review the research and application of seagrass seeds in recent years. The morphology, development, dispersal, dormancy and germination of seagrass seeds are summarized and compared from the viewpoint of seed biology and seed ecology. We propose that when natural seagrass seed banks are researched, it is also necessary to establish artificial seagrass seed banks based on research of seed biology and seed ecology, which will guide seed collection and preservation. Seeding method and the approach of restoration using seeds are discussed, and we also point out problems existing in current research and application. In conclusion, we project expectations of the future in the research and application of seagrass seeds, and we forecast that seagrass seed ecology research will be an emphasis in the future. In the application area, research should focus on increasing the seed germination rate and seedling rate, and the problem of low seedling survival rate must be solved if artificial seedlings grown from seeds are to be utilized to restore seagrass beds.
Isolation, characterization and identification of thiosulfate-oxidizing strain MU2A-22 isolated from volcanic deposits in Miyake-jima island, Japan

Abstract: Methods] The culture-based method was used to isolate and identify strain MU2A-22T for its phenotypic characteristics and taxonomic position. Results] The strain MU2A-22T was Gram-negative, short rod- to coccus-shaped. This bacterium could utilize D-glucose, L-arabinose, gluconate, adipate and dL-malate as sole carbon source. Strain MU2A-22T was able to use thiosulfate as an energy source with the optimum concentration of 2.5mM. The optimum growth condition was 25 °C?30 °C and pH was 6. 0?8. 0 respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that this strain was closely related to Paracoccus solventivorans 6637T within Alphaprotebacteria (97% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Its possess of the large-subunit gene of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL) has also been identified. The cellular fatty acid profiles was characterized of the genus Paracoccus. The major fatty acids (>10%) were C18:1(74.7%) and C18:0(12.1%). DNA-DNA relatedness between strain MU2A-22T and P. solventivorans 6637T was 49.3%. G+C contents was 66.5% ?66.7%. Conclusion] As for the above results, strain MU2A-22T seemed to be a novel species in the genus Paracoccus with its accession number of GQ452286 and the name of Paracoccus scorialis sp. nov. was proposed.

Abstract: 目的·探讨分期肾盂成形术(先期肾造瘘)与不分期肾盂成形术治疗小于3个月重度肾积水患儿的临床效果。方法·回顾性分析上海交通大学医学院附属新华医院2012年1月—2015年7月接受手术治疗的小于3个月重度肾积水患儿的临床资料。25例行分期肾盂成形术(A组),39例行不分期肾盂成形术(B组)。比较2组手术时间、术中出血量、并发症发生率、总住院时间及术后肾积水恢复情况等。结果·共有64例小于3个月重度肾积水患儿纳入研究。A组手术时间、总住院时间、术后尿路感染发生率明显高于B组,分别为(81±20) min与(53±18) min、(11.6±2.6) d与(6.2±1.5) d、36.0%与17.9%。术后6个月,2组患儿肾积水程度和肾脏功能均得到显著改善,组间差异无统计学意义。结论·分期肾盂成形术对于小于3月龄重度积水患儿肾脏的最终形态、功能恢复没有明显优势;不分期肾盂成形术安全、有效,应作为小婴儿重度肾积水的首选治疗方式。
: Objective · To investigate the clinical efficacy of one-stage pyeloplasty and second-stage pyeloplasty after nephrostomy for the treatment of severe hydronephrosis in infants younger than 3 months. Methods · Clinical data of severe hydronephrosis infants younger than 3 months who underwent pyeloplasty at Xinhua Hospital affiliated to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from Jan. 2012 to Jul. 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Twenty-five patients received second-stage pyeloplasty after nephrostomy (the A group) and 39 patients received one-stage pyeloplasty (the B group). The operative time, intraoperative blood loss, incidence rate of complications, hospital stay, and postoperative recovery were compared between two groups. Results · Sixty-four severe hydronephrosis infants younger than 3 months were enrolled. The A group has longer operative time and hospital stay and higher incidence rate of postoperative urinary tract infection as compared with the B group [(81 ± 20) min vs (53 ± 18) min, (11.6 ± 2.6) dvs (6.2 ± 1.5) d, and 36.0% vs 17.9%), respectively]. The hydronephrosis and renal function in two groups were significantly improved 6 months after surgery and the difference between two groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion · Second-stage pyeloplasty after nephrostomy has no obvious advantage for the treatment of severe hydronephrosis in infants younger than 3 months with respect to the final morphology and function recovery of involved kidneys. One-stage pyeloplasty is safe and effective and should be served as the preferred method for the treatment of severe hydronephrosis in infants
Discovery of Diagnosis Pattern of Coronary Heart Disease with Qi Deficiency Syndrome by the T-Test-Based Adaboost Algorithm

Abstract: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is still the leading cause of death for adults worldwide. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a history of 1000 years fighting against the disease and provides a complementary and alternative treatment to it. Syndrome is the core of TCM diagnosis and it is traditionally diagnosed based on macroscopic symptoms as well as tongue and pulse recognitions of patients. Establishment of the diagnosis method in the microcosmic level is an urgent and major problem in TCM. The aim of this study was to establish characteristic diagnosis pattern for CHD with Qi deficiency syndrome (QDS). Thirty-four biological parameters were detected in 52 patients having unstable angina (UA) with or without QDS. Then, we presented a novel data mining method, t-test-based Adaboost algorithm, to establish highest prediction accuracy with the least number of biological parameters for UA with QDS. We gained a pattern composed of five biological parameters that distinguishes UA with QDS patients from non-QDS patients. The diagnosis accuracy of the patterns could reach 84.5% based on a 3-fold cross validation technique. Moreover, we included 85 UA cases collected from hospitals located in the north and south of China to further verify the association between the pattern and QDS. The classification accuracy is 83.5%, which keeps consistent with the accuracy obtained by the cross-validation technique. The association between a symptom and the five biological parameters was established by the data mining method and it reached an accuracy of ~80%. These results showed that the t-test-based Adaboost algorithm might be a powerful technique for diagnosing syndrome in TCM in the context of CHD. 1. Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation of Superroot-derived Lotus corniculatus plants: a valuable tool for functional genomics

Abstract: In the present study, we developed an A. rhizogenes-mediated transformation of Superroot-derived L. corniculatus for gene function investigation, combining the efficient A. rhizogenes-mediated transformation and the rapid regeneration system of Superroot. The transformation system using A. rhizogenes K599 harbouring pGFPGUSPlus was improved by validating some parameters which may influence the transformation frequency. Using stem sections with one node as explants, a 2-day pre-culture of explants, infection with K599 at OD600 = 0.6, and co-cultivation on medium (pH 5.4) at 22°C for 2 days enhanced the transformation frequency significantly. As proof of concept, Superroot-derived L. corniculatus was transformed with a gene from wheat encoding an Na+/H+ antiporter (TaNHX2) using the described system. Transgenic Superroot plants were obtained and had increased salt tolerance, as expected from the expression of TaNHX2.A rapid and efficient tool for gene function investigation in L. corniculatus was developed, combining the simplicity and high efficiency of the Superroot regeneration system and the availability of A. rhizogenes-mediated transformation. This system was improved by validating some parameters influencing the transformation frequency, which could reach 92% based on GUS detection. Abstract: Ag2S nanoparticle nanowires were prepared in a porous anodic aluminum oxide template by a simple paired cell method, and were characterized by XRD, FESEM, HRTEM and EDS. The results showed that the as-prepared nanowires were composed of monoclinic Ag2S nanoparticles. The nanowire diameters ranged from 165 to 270 nm, and Ag2S nanoparticles were nearly spherical with diameters of 40 to 60 nm. The paired cell method is simple, low cost and easy to control for the fabrication of high density and high aspect ratio Ag2S nanoparticle nanowires. A formation mechanism for the nanoparticle nanowires was suggested.
Role of silicon in regulating plant resistance to insect herbivores

Abstract: Although silicon (Si) is not an essential element for the majority of plant species, it plays an important role in plant resistance to a range of abiotic and biotic stresses. In this paper, we review the role of Si in regulating host plant resistance to herbivorous insects. Si can enhance resistance to insect herbivores in the majority of plant species, which depends on the sources and the application modes of Si fertilizer. Si can enhance constitutive resistance of plants to herbivorous insects by increasing hardness and abrasiveness of plant tissues and/or reducing digestibility. This leads to a reduction in insect growth and reproduction with a concomitant reduction in crop damage. Si content, sediment position and alignment in plants affects the subsequent strength of constitutive resistance. In addition, Si can regulate induced direct plant defenses as well as indirect defenses. Induced direct defense comprises producing toxic substances, producing localized hypersensitive response and systemic acquired resistance, and releasing toxic compounds and defensive proteins, which slow herbivore growth and development. Induced indirect defense is realized through the emission of volatile compounds that attract parasitic and/or predatory natural enemies of the herbivorous insects.
Nutation sequence of the rigid Earth determined by expansion of precise tidal generating potential

Abstract: With the improvement to theory of Melchior P. concerning tide and nutation, we obtain the precession and nutation moment induced by high_order tidal generating potential, and an associated dynamical equation of wobble and nutation for the rigid Earth. Then, we theoretically define CIP of Earth rigorously. Under the effect of every order tidal moment, the expression of precession and nutation for the CIP axis is presented. Theoretical deduction shows that precession and nutation moment induced by odd number order's tidal generating potential cause out_of_phase of longitude and obliquity nutation(namely, there is cos term in longitude nutation, and sin term in obliquity nutation). Finally, using expansion of precise tidal gengrating potential, we establish a new rigid Earth nutation sequence which consists of 737 terms in all. The new nutation sequence is a better complement to the nutation sequence REN2000(it contains 678 solar_lunar nutation terms)of the rigid Earth adopted by IERS2003
