Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In this paper we give presentations for the monoid $\mathcal{DP}_n$ of all partial isometries on $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and for its submonoid $\mathcal{ODP}_n$ of all order-preserving partial isometries.
A note on bilateral semidirect product decompositions of some monoids of order-preserving partial permutations
Vítor H. Fernandes,Teresa M. Quinteiro
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In this note we consider the monoid $\mathcal{PODI}_n$ of all monotone partial permutations on $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and its submonoids $\mathcal{DP}_n$, $\mathcal{POI}_n$ and $\mathcal{ODP}_n$ of all partial isometries, of all order-preserving partial permutations and of all order-preserving partial isometries, respectively. We prove that both the monoids $\mathcal{POI}_n$ and $\mathcal{ODP}_n$ are quotients of bilateral semidirect products of two of their remarkable submonoids, namely of extensive and of co-extensive transformations. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{PODI}_n$ is a quotient of a semidirect product of $\mathcal{POI}_n$ and the group $\mathcal{C}_2$ of order two and, analogously, $\mathcal{DP}_n$ is a quotient of a semidirect product of $\mathcal{ODP}_n$ and $\mathcal{C}_2$.

Open Journal of Veterinary Medicine (OJVM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojvm.2014.410027
Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of EIPH in vaquejada horses via endoscopy and tracheal lavage and citology. We used eight Quarter-mile horses that usually perform at vaquejadas. Clinical examination was carried out before the race. After the race, endoscopy and tracheal lavage with 20 ml of saline via the service channel of the endoscope were performed. The samples were sent to the laboratory for processing and confection of the slides. Of the eight horses (four pull and four helper horses), six had hemosiderophages in their tracheal aspirates, confirming the existence of pulmonary hemorrhage after exercise. No difference was observed between the analyzed parameters between the two groups of vaquejada horses (P > 0.05). Tracheal lavage and endoscopy can be used for evaluating this important disease in animal athletes.
The antibacterial activity of propolis produced by Apis mellifera L. and Brazilian stingless bees
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-79302001000200003
Abstract: this study investigated the antibacterial activity of propolis produced by a. mellifera and brazilian stingless bees, called "meliponíneos". susceptibility tests to ethanolic extracts of propolis (eep) were performed using bacterial strains (staphylococcus aureus, enterococcus sp, and escherichia coli) isolated from human infections. dilution of eep in agar (%v/v) was used for determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (mic). the stingless bee species (and common names) were: nannotrigona testaceicornis ("iraí"), tetragonisca angustula ("jataí"), trigona spinipes ("arapuá"), scaptotrigona sp ("tiúba"), partamona sp ("cupira"), melipona scutellaris ("uru?u"), melipona sp ("manduri"), and melipona manda?aia ("manda?aia"). eep inhibitory efficiencies according to bacterial strains were: s. aureus - "cupira" > "manduri" = a. mellifera > "uru?u" > "manda?aia" > "iraí" > "tiúba" > "jataí" > "arapuá" = ethanol; enterococcus sp - "cupira" > "manduri" > a. mellifera > "manda?aia" > "uru?u" > "tiúba" > "jataí" > "arapuá" = ethanol; e. coli - "manduri" > "jataí" > ethanol > a. mellifera > "uru?u" > "cupira" > "iraí". propolis produced by "cupira" and "manduri" bees showed higher antibacterial activity than a. mellifera.

Motricidade , 2008,
Abstract: Back Ground: The professionals who work with muscle exercise have questioned the forms of evaluation of the dynamic force for exercise prescription purposes. Objective: to develop and to validate an equation for prediction of the load during weight training in the exercise of horizontal bench press with free weights. Materials and Methods: the sample comprised 60 (sixty) subjects engaged in recreational muscle exercise programs. For anthropometric evaluation and body composition the following measures were used: body mass, stature, estimated lean body mass, estimate body fat mass and the percentage of fat. For the maximum force of upper members the Repetition Maximum test (1RM) in the exercise of horizontal bench press was used. Results: the main results were: 1RM (75,5±12,7Kg); age (23±3,15years); %fat (8,3±3,0%); body mass (71,1±13,0Kg); stature (172,0±8,4m); lean body mass (62,8±10,6Kg) and fat body mass (6,2±3,5Kg). Discussion: it was possible to develop and to validate an equation of prediction of the load of work for weight training in the exercise of horizontal bench press, with a Standard Error of Estimation (SEE) of 3,378kg), and R2=0,98.

BMC Pediatrics , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2431-9-77
Abstract: We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled clinical trials published from 2005 to 2007 in a sample of four general and four pediatric journals. We used full-text databases to identify trials which reported on DMCs, interim analysis or early termination, and included children or adolescents. Information was extracted on general trial characteristics, risk of bias, and a set of parameters regarding DMC composition and roles, interim analysis and early termination.110 of the 648 pediatric trials in this sample (17%) reported on DMC or interim analysis or early stopping, and were included; 68 from general and 42 from pediatric journals. The presence of DMCs was reported in 89 of the 110 included trials (81%); 62 papers, including 46 of the 89 that reported on DMCs (52%), also presented information about interim analysis. No paper adequately reported all DMC parameters, and nine (15%) reported all interim analysis details. Of 32 trials which terminated early, 22 (69%) did not report predefined stopping guidelines and 15 (47%) did not provide information on statistical monitoring methods.Reporting on DMC composition and roles, on interim analysis results and on early termination of pediatric trials is incomplete and heterogeneous. We propose a minimal set of reporting parameters that will allow the reader to assess the validity of trial results.Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs) are central to modern clinical trials. They play a critical role in safeguarding both the interests of study participants and the scientific integrity of randomized trials[1] This task is performed through interim monitoring of safety and efficacy outcome data, as well as vigilance over the conduct of the study and safety aspects/adverse events. One of the key activities of DMCs is to make recommendations to the sponsor or steering committee regarding the appropriateness of trial continuation. Thus, the recommendations of a DMC can influence the conclusion and interpretation of trial
Outcome and quality of life of patients with acute kidney injury after major surgery
Abelha,F.; Botelho,M.; Fernandes,V.; Barros,H.;
Nefrología (Madrid) , 2009,
Abstract: background: in postoperative critically-ill patients who develop acute kidney injury (aki) it is important to focus on survival and quality of life beyond hospital discharge. the aim of the study was to evaluate outcome and quality of life in patients that develop aki after major surgery. methods: this retrospective study was carried out in a post- anaesthesia care unit with five intensive care beds during 2 years. patients were followed for the development of aki. preoperative characteristics, intra-operative management and outcome were evaluated. six months after discharge, these patients were contacted to complete a short form-36 questionnaire (sf-36) and to have their dependency in activities of daily living (adl) evaluated. chi-square or fischer's exact test were used to compare proportions between groups. a "t test" and a paired "t test" for independent groups was used for comparisons. results: of 1597 patients admitted to the pacu, 1200 patients met the inclusion criteria. one hundred-fourteen patients (9.6%) met aki criteria. patients with aki were more severely ill, stayed longer at the pacu. among 71 hospital survivors at 6 months follow-up, 50 completed the questionnaires. fifty-two percent of patients reported that their general level of health was better on the day they answered the questionnaire than 12 months earlier. patients that met aki criteria after surgery had worse sf-36 scores for physical function, role physical and role emotional domains. six months after pacu discharge, patients that met aki criteria were more dependent in instrumental-adl but not in personal-adl. conclusions: patients that develop aki improved selfperception of quality of life despite having high rate of dependency in adl tasks. for physical function and role physical domains they had worse scores than pacu patients that did not develop aki.
