Leadership to Creativity and Management of Innovation? The Case of the “Innovation Club” in a Production Company  [PDF]

Abstract: In the current era of ongoing dynamic business developments and advancements, any company that wishes to succeed needs to sustain an innovative culture in order to keep its position in the front line of competition. However, being creative and innovative in a production and manufacturing environment is challenging due to the organizational characteristics derive from a hierarchical structure in which systematic procedures are strictly followed. In this paper, we present a model for creating a sustainable culture of creativity and innovation in a manufacturing organization and we demonstrate the use of this model in a leading production company in the defense industry. The model explains the initiation phase that motivates employees to explore new opportunities and the maintenance phase that forms a sustainable infrastructure, which are integrated into a coherent foundation for continuous improvement and excellence. The case study describes how the model was implemented in the production company and reviews the major barriers the management faced in the process of implementing a culture of innovation. We discuss the actions taken to create a supportable infrastructure to promote innovative behavior by employees and managers and analyze different aspects of innovation strategy. We conclude with reporting the results of implementing this model in the case company and with recommendations for other manufacturing and production companies aspire to be innovative.
GABA Withdrawal Modifies Network Activity in Cultured Hippocampal Neurons

Abstract: Dissociated hippocampal neurons, grown in culture for 2 to 3 weeks, tended to fire bursts of synaptic currents at fairly regular intervals, representing network activity. A brief exposure of cultured neurons to GABA caused a total suppression of the spontaneous network activity. Following a washout of GABA, the activity was no longer clustered in bursts and instead, the cells fired at a high rate tonic manner. The effect of removing GABA could be seen as long as 1 to 2 days after GABA withdrawal and is expressed as an increase in the number of active cells in a network, as well as in their firing rates. Such striking effects of GABA removal may underlie part of the GABA withdrawal syndrome seen elsewhere.
Single molecule photon counting statistics for quantum mechanical chromophore dynamics

Abstract: We extend the generating function technique for calculation of single molecule photon emission statistics [Y. Zheng and F. L. H. Brown, Phys. Rev. Lett., 90,238305 (2003)] to systems governed by multi-level quantum dynamics. This opens up the possibility to study phenomena that are outside the realm of purely stochastic and mixed quantum-stochastic models. In particular, the present methodology allows for calculation of photon statistics that are spectrally resolved and subject to quantum coherence. Several model calculations illustrate the generality of the technique and highlight quantitative and qualitative differences between quantum mechanical models and related stochastic approximations. Calculations suggest that studying photon statistics as a function of photon frequency has the potential to reveal more about system dynamics than the usual broadband detection schemes.
Empiric anti-Candida therapy for patients with sepsis in the ICU: how little is too little?

Abstract: In their article in Critical Care, Zilberberg and colleagues examine the cost-effectiveness of empiric anti-Candida treatment for ICU patients with sepsis [1]. Over the past decade, Candida has emerged as an invasive pathogen in many ICUs [2-4]. The case-fatality rate for Candida blood-stream infections is substantially higher than that for bacterial blood-stream infections [5]. Exploring the reasons for such a trend, Kumar and colleagues [6] compared a large number of severe sepsis episodes caused by bacteria or Candida. Despite their high severity of illness and in contrast to patients with bacterial sepsis, most of those with Candida sepsis did not receive effective treatment within 24 hours of hypotension. Although the overall case-fatality rate was higher among those with Candida sepsis, the case-fatality rate among those who received early anti-Candida therapy was substantially lower and comparable to that seen in bacterial sepsis [6]. These data suggest that the early initiation of empiric anti-Candida treatment is life saving.The initiation of empiric anti-Candida therapy to patients with sepsis represents a tradeoff. On one hand, it can increase the survival rate among those infected with Candida. On the other hand, it increases costs and, possibly, the risk of drug-related toxicity, drug-drug interactions, and emergence of antifungal resistance [7]. Clinicians caring for ICU patients with sepsis frequently wonder in which circumstances is the administration of an empiric anti-Candida agent advisable? Which agent is most attractive? Similar to other clinical questions, the best experimental design to evaluate treatment strategies is the clinical trial. But like any trial that evaluates an empiric strategy, the required sample size, and, therefore, the cost and ability to enroll enough patients, are often prohibitive. Until now the only numbers which were known to be Tarski numbers of some groups were 4 and 6. We construct a group with Tarski number 5 and mention a related result for Tarski numbers of group actions.

For any k>3 we construct a faithful transitive action of a free group of rank k-1 with Tarski number k. Using similar techniques we construct a group action of a free group F with Tarski number 6 such that the Tarski numbers of restrictions of this action to finite index subgroups of F are arbitrarily large.

Abstract: The adolescent years are characterized by emotional upheaval and hormonal and physiological changes that often create tension and conflicts between girls and their parents. This research study is based on an analysis of the mother-adolescent daughter relationship, with 46 mother-daughter dyads. This research assessed the effect of the daughter’s body image (independent variable) and her view of her own mother-daughter relationship (independent variable) on her sense of wellbeing (dependent variable). This study used four questionnaires to evaluate the dyadic model: the Modified Gray’s Questionnaire (Body Image), the Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (LTEQ), the Mental Health Inventory (MHI) for measurement of the subjective sense of wellbeing, and the Relationship with Mother Questionnaire. Study findings show the importance of the adolescent girl’s positive body image on her sense of wellbeing, as well as the centrality of the mother-daughter relationship in the daughter’s body image and wellbeing.
Numerical Feasibility Study of a Wax Cold Flow Approach for Subsea Tie-In Flowlines Using a 1D Mechanistic Multiphase Flow Simulator  [PDF]

Abstract: This work is a thermo-fluid numerical case study to investigate the size and performance of a system that eliminates needs for insulating, heating and inhibiting chemically the deposition of wax in subsea tie-in flowlines. For short, we call this type of systems “Cold Flow”. The particular system analyzed in this study consists of a reactor unit at the inlet to the flowline, where the thermal solubility of the wax-creating molecules is reduced by cooling. Subsequently, solid wax is deposited in the reactor piping and wax free crude is entering the flowline. The reactor is regenerated periodically. The reactor-pipeline system was modelled using a commercial flowline simulator, with transient, thermal, multiphase and deposition capabilities. The basic layout used was a transportation pipeline of 8 km and 6.69 in ID with a mass flow rate of 17.51 kg/s, a water cut (WC) of zero and an inlet temperature of 70°C. The wax appearance temperature (cloud point) of the crude is 22°C and the seabed temperature is 4°C. Three types of reactors have been simulated: a non-insulated pipe section, a passive cooler with a bundle of parallel pipes and an active cooler. Sensitivity analyses have been performed for all three cases varying the external convective coefficient, the reactor pipeline diameter and the WC. For a non-insulated pipeline section cooler, the required length is of the same order of magnitude as the main flowline, implying that such a solution is impractical for short flowline distances or when a compact deployment is desired. For the passive cooler case, the required length was half of that in the previous case; thus it is still significant. For the active cooler reactor, the required cooling duty was 2.2 MW. In all three cases, the pipe-flow dynamics were analyzed, and the pigging arrangement complexity has been qualitatively addressed. However, the detailed design falls out of the scope of this study.
