Clinics , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-59322010000900002
Abstract: introduction: imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa resulting from metallo-β-lactamases has been reported to be an important cause of nosocomial infection and is a critical therapeutic problem worldwide, especially in the case of bacteremia. objectives: to determine the frequency of metallo-β-lactamases among imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and to compare methods of phenotypic and molecular detection. methods: during 2006, 69 imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa samples were isolated from blood and tested for metallo-β-lactamase production using both phenotypic methods. minimal inhibitory concentratrions (mic) (μg/ml) was determined with commercial microdilution panels. pulsed field gel electrophoresis (pfge) was performed among metallo-β-lactamase producers. results: of all the blood isolates, 34.5% were found to be imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa. positive phenotypic tests for metallo-β-lactamases ranged from 28%-77%, and polymerase chain reaction (pcr) were positive in 30% (of note, 81% of those samples were blaspm-1 and 19% were blavim-2). ethylenediamine tetracetic acid (edta) combinations for the detected enzymes had low kappa values; thus, care should be taken when use it as a phenotypic indicator of mbl. despite a very resistant antibiogram, four isolates demonstrated the worrisome finding of a colistin mic in the resistant range. pfge showed a clonal pattern. conclusion: metallo-β-lactamases among imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa were detected in 30.4% of imipenem-resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. this number might have been higher if other genes were included. spm-1 was the predominant enzyme found. phenotypic tests with low kappa values could be misleading when testing for metallo-β-lactamases. polymerase chain reaction detection remains the gold standard.

Boletim do Observatório Ambiental Alberto Ribeiro Lamego , 2010,
The threshold of sustainable withdrawal and redemption of the bicycle This paper is a theoretical reflection on the threshold of an era of replacing fossil fuels by alternative energy sources that may diminish environmental problems, especially global warming. The need for emission reductions promoted by the automobile and thesearch for energy sources have encouraged bicycle transportation and creation of public policies for improving industrial conditions at the time that the point of irreversible global climate change may have already been exceeded.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction occurring at the level of the pharynx during sleep. Although cephalometric analysis is an important method in the diagnosis of craniofacial deformities, CT and magnetic resonance imaging have been highlighted as the major imaging methods to investigate the possible causes of OSA, which, in most cases, is multifactorial. Magnetic resonance and CT both allow an excellent evaluation of the various anatomical planes of the site of obstruction, which enables better clinical assessment and surgical approach. This pictorial essay aims to describe the aspects that must be evaluated in the diagnostic imaging of patients presenting with the major predisposing factors for OSA.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2011000400010
Abstract: objective: to identify p50 suppression in patients with epilepsy, to investigate the effect of seizure control on p50 suppression, and to compare epilepsy patients with individuals with schizophrenia and healthy volunteers. method: p50 evoked potential parameters and p50 suppression were studied crossectionally in patients with uncontrolled or controlled epilepsy, in individuals with schizophrenia and in healthy volunteers. results: individuals with schizophrenia had significantly smaller conditioning stimulus (s1) amplitude, and patients with epilepsy had larger test stimulus (s2) amplitude. mean s2/s1 ratio was 0.71±0.33 for patients with uncontrolled epilepsy; 0.68±0.36 for patients with controlled epilepsy; 0.96±0.47 for individuals with schizophrenia, and 0.42±0.24 for healthy volunteers. conclusion: the sensory filter of patients with epilepsy is altered, and this alteration is not associated with seizure control. also, it works differently from the sensory filter of individuals with schizophrenia.

Abstract: objectives: to study the involvement of the hippocampus in the p50 evoked potential generation and of its suppression in epileptic patients with left or right unilateral hippocampal excision. methods: a transverse study with control group for comparison was done. exclusion criteria were another neurological or psychiatric disease, deafness, family history of psichosis, use of any atypical antipsychotic medication or use of drugs of abuse in the last month. the population was divided in two groups: group 1 (n = 34) - hippocampal excision; group 2 (n = 40) - normal controls. all participants were submitted to p50 recordings. critical variables for the analysis included conditioning (s1) and test (s2) p50 amplitude and s2/s1 ratio. t-test was used to compare the mean values between the groups and chis-quare test was done to compare s2/s1 suppression frequency. results: the mean s2/s1 ratio was 0.74 ± 0.44 in the group 1 and 0.42 ± 0.24 in the group 4 (p < 0.001). after comparing amplitude mean values, it has been found that s2 amplitude was significantly smaller in the control group (p < 0.001). conclusions: this study suggests that the hippocampus is not the generator of the waves in the p50 mid-latency auditory evoked potentials. this structure, however, is most likely involved in the generation of the suppression of the s2 testing wave in the double click paradigm.

Abstract: one of the most relevant justifications for the implementing of supply chain management is the benefit generated by supply chain partnerships. this paper is firstly concerned with the symmetry between the theoretical and empirical benefits. secondly, it aims to analyse the correlation between the empirical benefits and the level of investment made by the suppliers (capital and managerial time). a survey was chosen as the empirical research strategy, capturing 99 questionnaires from the population database. the questionnaires were sent to the operation managers during the first semester of 2002. for the data analyses, multivariate tests were applied. the results show symmetry between the theoretical and empirical benefits. in addition, the benefits are greater when the firms invest more in their managerial time than in capital.
