H Beyer
Lexikos , 2006,
Abstract: Die gebruikersperspektief staan tans sentraal in die leksikografiese gesprek. Sleutelwoorde: gebruik, gebruiker, gebruikersperspektief, gebruikersver-wysingsraamwerk, gebruikersvriendelikheid, kanaal, kommunikasiemodel, konteks, leksikograaf, leksikografiese kommunikasiemodel, medium, meta-teks, stylgids, terugvoer, werklike doel, woordeboek, woordeboekplan
Nuwe dinge in Nuwe woorde* — 'n oorsig oor buitemikrostrukturele leksikografiese vernuwings
H Beyer
Lexikos , 2000,
Abstract: New Things in New Words* — an overview of nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations. This review article focuses on the nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations which are apparent in the dictionary under discussion. The emerging notion of user-friendliness in modern lexicographic practice does in no way imply that lexicographic innovations should be limited to the microstructure of dictionaries. Innovative approaches to the presentation of information in the user's guide (where a user's guide exists in a dictionary!) and other elements of the front and back matter in dictionaries play as an important role in making a dictionary more user-friendly as do innovations in the microstructure. New Words/Nuwe woorde, as the newest contribution to the collection of Afrikaans translation dictionaries, exhibits some remarkable nonmicrostructural lexicographic innovations. These innovations are highlighted, evaluated and criticised in this article.
H Beyer
Lexikos , 2009,
Configuration Mixing in Relativistic Quark Models
H. J. Weber,M. Beyer
Physics , 1999,
Abstract: Starting from the standard and commonly used relativistic nucleon wave function, we show that residual interactions based on gluon or Goldstone boson exchanges generate additional components leading to configuration mixing. This result suggests that realistic nucleon wave functions can be expected to be far more complex than seemingly successful form factor fits in relativistic quark models would have one believe.
Maternal smoking promotes chronic obstructive lung disease in the offspring as adults
Beyer D,Mitfessel H,Gillissen A
European Journal of Medical Research , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/2047-783x-14-s4-27
Abstract: Introduction In utero and/or childhood environmental tobacco smoke exposure is well known to adversely affect lung function and to depreciate child's health in many ways. Fewer studies have assessed the long-term effects on COPD development and disease severity in later adulthood. Methods COPD patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire regarding their personal as well as the smoking habits of their parents. Data were compared with the disease history, e.g. COPD exacerbation rate, and their lung function data. Results Between 2003 and 2004 COPD patients were recruited a) in a private practice specialized in pulmonary medicine (n = 133) and b) in a hospital (n = 158). 75% of their fathers and only 15.4 of all mothers smoked regularly. COPD patients from smoking mothers had lower FEV1 predicted than those raised in household without maternal smoking exposure: 39.4 ± 9.5% vs. 51.9 ± 6.0% (P = 0.037). Fathers had no effect on FEV1 regardless if they are smokers or non-smokers. Rate of severe exacerbations requiring hospitalization remained unaffected by parental second hand smoke exposure. Conclusion Maternal smoking negatively affects lung function of their offspring even in late adulthood when they develop COPD. It even aggravates the cumulative effect of active cigarette consumption. Clinical course of the COPD remained unaffected.
On the Quasi-Periodic Oscillations of Magnetars
A. Colaiuda,H. Beyer,K. D. Kokkotas
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.14878.x
Abstract: We study torsional Alfv\'en oscillations of magnetars, i.e., neutron stars with a strong magnetic field. We consider the poloidal and toroidal components of the magnetic field and a wide range of equilibrium stellar models. We use a new coordinate system (X,Y), where $X=\sqrt{a_1} \sin \theta$, $Y=\sqrt{a_1}\cos \theta$ and $a_1$ is the radial component of the magnetic field. In this coordinate system, the 1+2-dimensional evolution equation describing the quasi-periodic oscillations, QPOs, see Sotani et al. (2007), is reduced to a 1+1-dimensional equation, where the perturbations propagate only along the Y-axis. We solve the 1+1-dimensional equation for different boundary conditions and open magnetic field lines, i.e., magnetic field lines that reach the surface and there match up with the exterior dipole magnetic field, as well as closed magnetic lines, i.e., magnetic lines that never reach the stellar surface. For the open field lines, we find two families of QPOs frequencies; a family of "lower" QPOs frequencies which is located near the X-axis and a family of "upper" frequencies located near the Y-axis. According to Levin (2007), the fundamental frequencies of these two families can be interpreted as the turning points of a continuous spectrum. We find that the upper frequencies are constant multiples of the lower frequencies with a constant equaling 2n+1. For the closed lines, the corresponding factor is n+1 . By these relations, we can explain both the lower and the higher observed frequencies in SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14.
Relativistic Spin-Flavor States in Light Front Dynamics
M. Beyer,C. Kuhrts,H. J. Weber
Physics , 1998, DOI: 10.1006/aphy.1998.5837
Abstract: Orthonormal spin-flavor wave functions of Lorentz covariant quark models of the Bakamjian-Thomas type are constructed for nucleon resonances. Three different bases are presented. The manifestly Lorentz covariant Dirac-Melosh basis is related to the Pauli-Melosh basis and the symmetrized Bargmann-Wigner basis that are manifestly orthogonal.
On the r-mode spectrum of relativistic stars
H. R. Beyer,K. D. Kokkotas
Physics , 1999, DOI: 10.1046/j.1365-8711.1999.02739.x
Abstract: We present a mathematically rigorous proof that the r-mode spectrum of relativistic stars to the rotational lowest order has a continuous part. A rigorous definition of this spectrum is given in terms of the spectrum of a continuous linear operator. This study verifies earlier results by Kojima (1998) about the nature of the r-mode spectrum.
Modeling and Measurements of Novel Monolithic Filters
Aly H. Aly,Badawy El-Sharawy,Adalbert Beyer
Active and Passive Electronic Components , 2008, DOI: 10.1155/2008/537069
Abstract: This paper presents novel multilayer tuneable high -filters based on hairpin resonators including ferroelectric materials. This configuration allows the miniaturization of these filters to a size that makes them suitable for chip and package integration and narrow-band applications. The main focus was miniaturizing filters with coupled loops using multilayer dielectric substrates. A further goal was to increase the quality factor of these distributed filters by embedding high dielectric materials in a multilayer high- and low- (dielectric constant) substrate that is supported by LTCC technology. An improved W-shape bandpass filter was proposed with a wide stopband and approximately 5% bandwidth.
