Approaching metric domains

Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: In analogy to the situation for continuous lattices which were introduced by Dana Scott as precisely the injective T$_0$ spaces via the (nowadays called) Scott topology, we study those metric spaces which correspond to injective T$_0$ approach spaces and characterise them as precisely the continuous lattices equipped with an unitary and associative $[0,\infty]$-action. This result is achieved by a thorough analysis of the notion of cocompleteness for approach spaces.

Educa??o , 2011,
This article aims at presenting approximations between philosophy and literature and discussing their importance to education. These two areas of knowledge, through the wisdom and civilization processes that surround their writing, dialogue in different ways, contributing to the formation process of the human being. This study, which is bound to the research line of Education, Languages and Technology, from PPGEd/UCS, is supported by the assumptions of Plato and a brief analysis of a short story by the Russian writer Anton P. Tchekhov (1999), representing the classic literature. Both disciplines constitute valuable tools for an education committed with the humanization of the individuals.

Abstract: Elizabeth A Valente1, Megan E Sheehy1, Joshua J Avila2, Julie A Gutierres2, Matthew J Delmonico2, Ingrid E Lofgren11Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences, 2Department of Kinesiology, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI, USAObjectives: The aim of the study was to examine the additive effect of resistance training (RT) to a dietary education (DE) intervention on emerging coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors, concentration of apolipoproteins B (apoB) and A-I (apoA-I), and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet Index scores in overweight and obese older adults.Patients and methods: This was an ancillary study of a randomized clinical trial held in the Fall of 2008 at the University of Rhode Island. Participants were overweight or obese subjects (mean body mass index [BMI] of 31.7 kg/m2) randomized into two groups, one participating in DE only (n = 12) and the other participating in DE plus RT (DERT) (n = 15). The intervention involved all subjects participating in 30 minutes of DE per week for 10 weeks. Subjects in the DERT group participated in an additional 40 minutes of RT three times per week for 10 weeks. Measurements taken were anthropometric (height, weight, waist circumference, and body composition using the BOD POD [Body Composition System, v 2.14; Life Measurement Instruments, Concord, CA]), clinical (blood pressure), and biochemical (lipid profile and apoB and apoA-I concentrations), and the DASH Diet Index was used to measure diet quality. Results: 27 subjects (11 males, 16 females), with a mean age of 66.6 ± 4.3 years, were included in analyses. The DERT subjects had significantly better triacylglycerol and apoB concentrations and DASH Diet Index scores than the DE subjects post-intervention. Improvements were seen within the DE group in energy intake, fat-free mass, and systolic blood pressure and within the DERT group in body weight, percentage of body fat, BMI, diastolic blood pressure, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (all P < 0.05).Conclusion: The addition of RT effectively reduced CHD risk factors, body composition, and diet quality in overweight and obese older adults; DERT was more effective than DE alone in improving DASH Diet Index scores and lowering apoB concentrations but was not more effective in increasing apoA-I concentrations. Future research is needed to determine if apolipoproteins are superior to lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in predicting CHD risk. Keywords: physical activity, health education, lipids, DASH Diet Index

Abstract: electro catalysts electrodes were developed in this work, using ceria and cu, for the direct oxidation of ethanol in solid oxide fuel cells (sofc). an alternative method developed by gortes et al [1] was applied to the production of the compound cu-ceo2-ysz (8% mol yttria stabilized zirconia). a ysz porous support was prepared, from a ceramic suspension containing ysz powder, maize starch and dispersant applied by serigraphy over one of the faces of the dense ysz electrolyte. it was then calcined to remove the volatile elements and finally sintered. on the other side of the electrolyte a multifunctional cathode made of a composite material, la0,8sr0,2mno3+δ/zr2o3-y2o3, was applied. the first layer consisted of a functional cathode film of lsm/ysz (50/50% by mass), the second layer being a pure cathode of lsm (la0.8sr0.2mno3). over the porous support of ysz, successive impregnations with an aqueous solution of ceria nitrate were applied. afterwards, similarly, impregnations with an aqueous solution of copper were applied, to obtain the desired weight percentage concentration for each element. the porous support was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (sem) through the analysis of surface and fracture, where it was observed the porous structure formed due to the use of particles of starch. the amount, morphology and spatial distribution of elements, were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (eds) with mapping, showing the concentration of ceria, copper and ysz throughout the volume of the anode. the suitability to the use of fuel ethanol and hydrogen in the la0,8sr0,2mno3/ysz/cu-ceo2-ysz cell was analyzed by the electrochemical performance of the open circuit potential, current density and power density.
