CERNE , 2007,
Abstract: Approximately 0.6% of the Brazilian Federal District′s territory have been degraded by mining. The evaluation of plantsuccession on such sites can be a useful tool to define strategies for reclamation. Thus, woody species of fifteen exploited sites, abandoned to succession for 20 - 47 years, were surveyed. All woody plants present on the sites were identified and counted for theevaluation of frequency, density and dominance of plant species naturally established on the mined spoils. Results show a plant densitybelow 5% and a species density below 15% compared to values measured in native areas. Ten out 98 species found on the mined areasaccounted for 52.9% of woody plants dominance. Capacity of re-growing from roots of some Savanna species is shaping thecommunities and the succession on exploited sites. About of native species found on the mined areas are able to re-grow from roots, and they made up to 89% of dominance and 96% of plant s density. Results point out to the need of boosting ecological successionthrough revegetation works on mined areas in the Brazilian Federal District.

International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology , 2010,
Abstract: Introduction: Several studies addressing preoperative factors that predict difficulty of endotracheal intubation graduated by anesthesiologists, for the scale of the Cormack-Lehane. These parameters were evaluated for the difficulty of location of the laryngoscope in microsurgery of the larynx. There is not a standard scale of difficulty targeted to surgeons of the larynx. Objective: Create a standard scale of difficulty leasing the laryngoscope during microsurgery of the larynx, with a focus on exposure of the vocal folds (vocal cords) to evaluate which clinical parameters predict difficulty of exposure of their vocal folds and verify the improvement of laryngeal exposure with the hanger of the laryngoscope. Method: A prospective randomized study, 57 patients undergoing laryngeal microsurgery. The preoperative parameters were evaluated: three epidemiological data, two of history and 13 physical examination. Intraoperatively: the anesthesiologist evaluated the Cormack-Lehane score and the surgeon evaluated according to the proposed scale, before and after placement of the hanger. Results and Conclusion: Several parameters showed sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value for high inadequate exposure of the larynx. But only distance hiomentual <6.05 cm (p = 0.003) and 2 classes of Cormack-Lehane (p = 0.04) with statistical significance and high sensitivity of 100% and 81% respectively. The use of the hanger of laryngoscope laryngeal exposure improved significantly (p = 0.04). The proposed scale standardizes the visualization and grades the difficulty of exposure of their vocal folds, facilitating comparisons between studies and communication between otolaryngologists.

Revista Sociedade & Natureza , 2005,
Abstract: This study was aimed at assessing the possibility to use digital photographs to evaluate success of the reclamation of a gravel-mined degraded area. The indicator used to measure success was the degree of vegetation ground cover. Photographs were taken with a Canon camera (model Power Shot A 100). On 11th of October 2003, in a sunny day (without clouds), a total of 24 photographs were taken of the centre of the 24 experimental plots. All the 24 photographs were processed with ENVI 3.5 software following the same procedures appliedto process satellite scenes. In each scene analysed, two classes - vegetation cover and bared soil - were identified with the maximum likelihood algorithm. Results showed that digital photographs can be used in the quantification of vegetation ground cover and that the technique employed in this study can be applied to evaluate methodologies of reclamation of mined areas in which the establishment of vegetation is expected. The technique tested in thisstudy can be employed by government agencies in charge of land reclamation plans because it is efficient in determining vegetation ground cover, is easy to perform and is not expensive.

Abstract: It was aimed to study biological and behavior aspects of larvae and adults of Chrysoperla externa in greenhouse, on cotton plants. Recently hatched larvae were released on the upper third of cotton plants, which were previously infested with Aphis gossypii,. After emergence, adults were separated by sex and packed in cylindrical PVC recipients with cotton plant. We evaluated the duration of each larval, pre-pupal and pupal periods, pre-oviposition, oviposition, effective oviposition and post-oviposition periods, male and female logevity, daily and total oviposition capacity. The behavior of pupal stage was also evaluated, which released three larvae of the 3rd instar per cotton plant and they were put on the lower, medium and upper sections. As treatments, it was used naked soil, dried leaves from cotton plant, crushed rock no 1; and crushed rock no 1 + dried leaves. Larvae from different instars were released on the upper section of the cotton plants infested with A. gossypii to verify the search timing that marked the period the prey was exposed to the predator. C. externa larvae passed through all the phases of their biological cycle and there was no significant influence on the type of the soil covering used on pupal stage, since all of them were significantly higher on naked soil. There was no significative difference on the prey search by C. externa larvae.

Abstract: the study of natural circulation phenomenon has been object of crescent interest in scientific community in recent years. the new generation of compact nuclear reactors uses natural circulation of the fluid as a residual heat removal cooling system in case of accident or shutdown. the objective of this paper is to present a comparison between experimental data and numerical simulation results for the natural circulation phenomenon in single and two-phase flow regime. experimental data were obtained from a circuit built with glass tubes, through which thermal hydraulic phenomenon visualization was possible. the circuit is composed of an electric heater as the heat source, a heat exchanger as the heat sink and an expansion tank to accommodate fluid density changes. instrumentation data acquisition is performed through thermocouples and pressure meters, and controlled by a computer interface developed using labview. numerical modeling and simulations were done with the thermal hydraulic code relap5, which is widely used for this purpose. the cyclic reverse flow observed in the circuit was well represented by the numerical model. the comparison demonstrated that the numerical simulations are very close to the experimental data.
