Abstract: The Elanus leucurus is a rural species that happening from Argentina and Chile to North America that frequently benefits with the agricultural progresses. Studies about the reproductive behavior of the Elanus leucurus still has little knowledge in the scientific comunity and the present study aims at to know the habits and behavior of this species at this reproductive time. The work totaled about 460 hours of observations among the beginning of May untill October. The nestling behavior was observed by 60 hours in two diferrent nests in the area of Sete Lagoas and for 48 hours in the area of Divinópolis. The study of the biology and the alimentary ecology of the Elanus leucurus it's very important because little know on the strategies of conservation of the species and your biota, presenting an immense value for the control of diseases in the fields and neotropical savannahs.

Abstract: discs of polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with glutaraldehyde were synthesized under acid catalysis (h2so4). then, the antigen f1 purified from yersinia pestis was covalently linked to this modified polymer. afterwards, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) was established for the diagnosis of plague in rabbit and human. the best conditions for the method were achieved by using 1.3 ?g of f1 prepared in 0.067 m phosphate buffer, ph 7.2, containing 1 m nacl (pbs); anti-igg peroxidase conjugate diluted 6,000 times and as a blocking agent 3% w/v skim milk in pbs. the titration of positive rabbit serum according to this procedure detected antibody concentrations up to 1:12,800 times. the present method, the conventional elisa and passive haemagglutination assay are compared.

Abstract: A aduba o verde constitui prática cultural de relevante impacto positivo em sistemas de produ o agrícola que visam o uso sustentável da terra. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar o desempenho de seis leguminosas utilizadas para aduba o verde, quanto à produtividade de fitomassa, cobertura do solo e uso da radia o fotossinteticamente ativa na regi o conhecida como Alto Vale do Jequitinhonha em Minas Gerais. O experimento foi conduzido entre os meses de mar o a outubro de 2010, em delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repeti es. Os adubos verdes utilizados foram: crotalária (Crotalariaspectabilis), feij o-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformis), feij o-guandu-an o (Cajanus cajan), lab-lab (Lablab purpureus), mucuna-an (Mucuna deenringiana) e tremo o-branco (Lupinus albus L.). Os adubos verdes apresentaram elevadas produ es de fitomassa, mas com diferentes picos de cobertura do solo e intercepta o da radia o. Os maiores acúmulos de matéria seca e fresca foram observados pela crotalária seguido pelo feij o-guandu-an o. Entre as espécies estudadas, o feij o-de-porco é aque apresentou maior período vegetativo, representando elevado potencial para recobrimento do solo, destacando-se também na intercepta o de radia o fotossinteticamente ativa.Green manuring is a positive practice that reduces the impact on agricultural production systems aimed at sustainable land use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of six legumes used for green manure, the productivity of biomass, land cover and use of photosynthetic active radiation in the region of the Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiment was conducted during March to October, 2010 in randomized block design with four replications. Green manures were used: Crotalaria spectabilis, Canavalia ensiformis, Cajanus cajan, Lablab purpureus, Mucuna deenringiana and Lupinus albus. Green manures had high yields of biomass, however, different peaks of ground cover and radiation interception were observed. The largest accumulations of dry and fresh matter were observed in C. spectabilis followed by C. cajan. Amongthe species studied, C. ensiformis has a larger growing season, representing great potential for soil covering, and is importantfor the interception of photosynthetically active radiation.

Abstract: objective: to supplement the information on the underlying cause of death due to external causes through using news carried in newspapers. methods: this study investigated 153 deaths due to external causes among people living in belo horizonte, southeastern brazil, in 2008. a database named "press" was constructed using information from large-circulation national and state-level newspapers, and this was correlated with the database of the brazilian mortality information system. the data were analyzed using the epiinfo and link-plus software. the concordance of the results was assessed using the kappa coefficient. results: a total of 1,530 news items on accidents and violence were located, and 201 of these items were matched with death certificates in the mortality information system; 153 items referred to people living in belo horizonte. the main causes of death identified in the databases were aggression and traffic accidents. in the press database, aggression and traffic accidents accounted for 86.3%, other accidents 7.8%, events of undetermined intent 4.6% and legal intervention cases 1.3%. after supplementation using the press database, there were increases in the numbers of deaths due to car accidents (220.0%) and motorcycle accidents (100.0%), which resulted in a decrease in the numbers of deaths due to indeterminate causes and unspecified traffic accidents notified in the mortality information system. conclusions: news in newspapers has great potential for qualifying and supplementing the information on the underlying cause of death due to external causes in the mortality information system, particularly regarding deaths due to traffic accidents.
Qualidade de sementes de alface enriquecidas com micronutrientes e reguladores de crescimento durante o armazenamento

Abstract: it is known that micronutrients and growth regulators are important metabolism activators, which can bring benefits to germination and seed vigor when incorporated into the treatment and so increase the developmental potential of the plants in the field. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of applying micronutrients and growth regulators in germination, vigor, on the activity of some enzymes and on the total protein contents in lettuce seeds during storage. the seeds were treated with the chemicals starter?, cellerate? and stimulate? at the dosages corresponding to 0%, 50%, 100%, 150% and 200% of the dose recommended by the manufacturer, using the film-coating technique. the evaluations were performed at 0, 6 and 12 months of storage on the following parameters: germination percentage, emergence percentage and speed index, activity of enzymes endo-β-mannanase and esterase, total protein content and health. it was concluded that growth regulators promoted an increase in the emergence speed index of the lettuce seedlings when applied at the dose recommended and at pre-sowing; the coating of the lettuce seeds with the double the recommended dose of the chemicals based on micronutrients and growth regulators, reduced their quality; the activity of the esterase enzyme increases with the storage of lettuce seeds, pointing to an increase in the decaying process; the coating with both micronutrients and growth regulators and storage interfere in the activity of the endo-β-mannanase enzyme in lettuce and seeds.

Abstract: seed coating is a technology that allows incorporation of additive to the seeds, without change its size or form. the coating technique is a strategy that guarantees high seedling emergence in the field, gain in productivity and better aggregation of agricultural inputs to the seeds. thus, this study had the objective of evaluating the effect of the incorporation of antagonistic microorganisms, mycorrhiza, amino acids, micronutrients and growth regulators through the seed coating technique on the quality of lettuce seeds. the seeds were coated with two types of polymer that were applied together with antagonistic microorganisms (trichoderma viride, trichoderma polysporhum, trichoderma stromaticum, beauveria bassiana, metarhizium anisopliae), mycorrhiza, amino acids, micronutrients and growth regulators according to the methodology proposed by the manufacturer. the germination percentage and emergence, the emergence speed index, the number of plants, the dry mass of aerial and root parts and the height of the seedlings were evaluated. microbiolization of the seeds with the mixture of microorganisms trichoderma viride, t. polysporhum, t. stromaticum, beauveria bassiana, metarhizium anisopliae and mycorrhiza negatively affected the quality of the lettuce seeds. the inoculation of lettuce seeds with trichoderma viride and growth regulator increased the percentage and the seedling emergence speed index.

Abstract: soluble adult schistosoma mansoni antigen preparation (swap) was covalently fixed onto polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde discs and an enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (elisa) was set up. the best conditions for the assay were established and it was found that small amount of antigen such as 1.5 μg was required. a comparison between this procedure and the conventional elisa was proceeded. a reliable method of antigen immobilization was achieved and the low prices of the employed reagents are economically attractive
Atividade enzimática e perfil da comunidade bacteriana em solo submetido à solariza??o e biofumiga??o

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of solarization and biofumigation on the soil microbial communities, by means of beta-glucosidase activity and 16s rdna pcr-dgge analyses. solarization with a plastic covering of the soil took place over two, four and six months, and the soils were biofumigated by the addition of 2 and 5% (v/v) of chicken litter to the soil. right after the plastic cover removal and after 30 days, beta-glucosidase was lower than in the nonsolarizated control. after 60 days, there were no longer significant differences in beta-glucosidase activity between treatments. the addition of 5% chicken litter stimulated beta-glucosidase activity. bacterial community profile was influenced by solarization time, regardless of time of plastic cover removal. there was no effect of chicken litter amendments over the bacterial community structure. solarization affects beta-glucosidase activity but, after 60 days, its effects are no longer detectable, differently of the observed data regarding soil bacterial community structure by pcr-dgge. biofumigation stimulates beta-glicosidase activity, but it doesn't affect the bacterial community structure.
Validade e reprodutibilidade de marcadores do consumo de alimentos e bebidas de um inquérito telef?nico realizado na cidade de Belo Horizonte (MG), Brasil

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the validity and reproducibility markers of food and beverage intake obtained by means of a telephone-based surveillance system. methods: reproducibility was assessed by means of repeated interviews with a 7-15 day interval after the first interview of the system (n=258). validity was analyzed based on three interviews corresponding to the 24 hour recall method, used as gold standard, 3 days a week, 7 to 15 days after the original telephone interview (n=217). in the study of reproducibility, kappa statistics was used to measure the similarity between the results of the proportions obtained in the first and second interviews. for validation, the proportion of positive reports regarding foods and beverages at the original telephone interview was compared to that obtained by the 24 hour recall method, and the results was analyzed by calculating sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value. results: in the reproducibility study, the agreement was almost perfect for the marker milk consumption (0.86), substantial for fruit consumption (0.67), intake of fruits and vegetables, intake of meat with fat and alcohol abuse. the agreement was moderate for the intake of soft drink, and fair for the consumption of vegetables. regarding the validity, there was an underestimation of fruit, vegetable and milk consumption, except for meat and alcohol when compared with the consumption frequency estimated from the three 24-hours recalls, differences related to soft drink consumption was inexpressive. conclusion: the instruments enabled the surveillance of factors which were potentially associated with chronic diseases, however, it is a priority to continue with validation studies in other populations to provide greater system reliability, always considering possible limiting factors.
