Uso de teorías y modelos en contribuciones de la Revista de Salud Pública de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 1999-2004

Abstract: objective: to identify the main features of the theories and theoretical models used in the articles published by the revista de salud pública (public health journal) of the national university of colombia. methods: in february 2005 all the numbers published by the journal from 1999 to 2004 were analyzed. a trained reader registered different variables of interest based on instruments and criteria adapted from previous studies. results: a total amount of six volumes corresponding to 21 numbers of the journal were read, 18 of the periodical publication and 3 special numbers. a total amount of 154 contributions were classified into 66 articles or research summaries (43%), 62 essays, revisions or conferences on specific topics (40%), and 26 on up-to-date subjects or symposia (17%). the main topics were health system and policies (26%), epidemiology (21%) and health management (13%). although 34 of 154 articles (22%) referred to 9 theories and 39 models as theoretical frameworks, only 17 (11%) involve a deep usage of them according to the criteria adopted. conclusions: the articles published in the journal revealed a limited use of theories and models and a lack of rigor in the way the authors structured them from the point of view of subject, methodology and analysis.

Abstract: objective: to identify the theories and theoretical models used in the articles published by national school of public health journal of the university of antioquia, during the period 2000-2004. methods: in january of 2005 all issues published from 2000 to 2004 were analyzed. a researcher with experience in theories and models analyzed all articles in every issue using a questionnaire to identify theoretical references. results: eleven issues of the journal were revised, ten of periodical publication and one special issue. 103 articles were identified: 46 research studies, 35 revisions of specific topics and 22 opinion articles, different topics were identified such as health system, epidemiology, and psychological and social aspects. although 35 (34%) of the articles involved 50 theories and models as theoretical framework, only 11 (10%) showed an appropriate methodological and scientific use of them according to adopted criteria. conclusions: there was a limited use of theories and models in the articles published in the journal during 2000-2004; there was also a low rigor in using this theories and models to focus the theme, methodology and analysis of the studied topic.

Abstract: introduction: preventive activities in communication disorders treated by speech-hearing therapists of the universidad del valle in cali colombia, between january and april, 1995, are described. methodology: forty-five professionals to whom a self administered questionnaire with 13 questions was applied, were included in the study. results: for 67% the program of graduation is basic as source of their preventive knowledge. 47% used only one of nine strategic options and 29% report the use of only two of these preventive interventions. for all communication areas, on average nearly 60% of speech-hearing therapists never use preventive actions. conclusion: the alumni of the universidad del valle do not exercise the practice of prevention in a sistematic way it has been claimed by the curriculum of the school. some determinants of social context and demand of professional services are suspected to induce a great reduction in the proportion and frecuency of preventive practice in the professional role.

Abstract: INTRODUCCIóN: Un curriculo de formación en fonoaudiología, idealmente, contempla fundamentación teórica-prática para el abordaje preventivo de desordenes de comunicación humana presentes en usuarios de servi os profesionales. Para explorar la coherencia de lo propuesto por un plan de estudios y las prácticas preventivas en el ejercicio profesional, se vinculó a los graduados del programa de estudios en fonoaudiologia de la Universidad del Valle con sede en la ciudad de Cali - Colombia. METODOLOGíA: Se formuló un estudio descriptivo; 45 profisionales que cumplieron criterios de graduación, residencia y con ejercicio comprobado en la ciudad al momento del estudio, respondieron entre enero y abril de 1995 a un cuestionario autoadministrado de 13 items, formulados y validados según objetivos del estudio; referidos a variable laborales, ocupacionales y profesionales para describir y analizar la distribución del grupo según campo de ocupación, lugar de trabajo, tipo de institución a la que estam vinculados, grupo etáreo y área de comunicación humana en la que ejercían su prática professional; abordar el origen intra o extracurricular de sus conocimientos en prevención y la utilización-frequencia de estrategias y acciones específicas de prevención en las áreas de voz-habla, audición, lenguaje y aprendizaje. RESULTADOS: El 67% reconoció el plan de estudios como fuente relevante de sus conocimientos preventivos. Un 47% de profesionales usaba solo una entre nueve estrategias preventivas viables; un 29% afirmó haber usado maximo dos de tales alternativas de intervencíon. Para todas las areas de comunicación, en media, cerca del 60% de fonoaudiólogos nunca incorporó acciones preventivas de ninguna categoría. CONCLUSIóN: La mayoría del grupo estudiado no incorpora en su ejercicio profesional estrategias ni acciones preventivas de desordenes de comunicación del modo propuesto en el perfil curricular, como es socialmente esperado, a pesar de reconocer los aportes teorico-praticos preventivos recibidos durante su formación académica. Se sugiere que determinantes del mercado laboral y de la demanda de servicios fonoaudiológicos impiden la incorporación de práticas preventivas habituales.

Abstract: objective: to provide evidence about the utilization of theories and theoretical models in the postgraduate research carried out by the school of public health, university of valle, in cali, colombia. methodology: in march 2005, the total amount of 540 reports and theses submitted between 1965 and 2004 to get master?s degree in the school were analyzed. based on a set of established criteria and using a questionnaire previously designed and applied, a trained reviewer recorded the variables defined for this study. results: 405 reports and theses submitted between 1990 and 2004 (75% of the universe) were included in this study; most of them were focused on public health (33%) and health management (31%), followed by those devoted to occupational health (20%) and epidemiology (16%). the major amount based on a quantitative focus were present in the last two types of studies. in reports, 52% included a theoretical framework, 27% a conceptual framework and 14% a referential framework. a total of 33 (8%) out of 405 reports included a theory or a theoretical model, but only 3 (0.7%) developed them in-depth. conclusions: the use of theories and theoretical models in public health for purposes of thematic, methodological and analytical orientation in the analyzed studies is low; and a very low rigor is also noticeable when using this theoretical basis.
Producción investigativa de grupos colombianos reconocidos por Colciencias en temas de gestión, políticas y sistemas de salud, entre 1994 y 2004

Abstract: health management, policies and system research is a national and international priority especially within the context of health sector reform. objective: to identify studies on these topics carried out from 1994 on by research groups recognized by colciencias in order to provide an overview about them. methods: from gruplac and cvlac databases of colciencies (2004) all research groups with studies related to health management, policies and system were identified and all the studies performed by them were taken according to our objective, level involved (local, regional or national) and methodological approach. finally studies were grouped accor- investigative production of colombian research groups recognized by colciencias in matters of health management, policies and systems between 1994 and 2004 ding to topics. results: 27 research groups were identified and 292 studies registered by them, from which 158 were empirical studies. only 97 were analyzed as 61 were taken out because they did not have all required information. findings suggest a limited development in research of health management, policies and system in colombia. therefore strengthening policies and mechanisms to encourage research in these fields are required.
