Abstract: Following Nadarajah [1], we introduce a new bivariate correlated type Gamma distribution, whose joint density is expressed in two parts. Expressions for single and joint moments of the variates are derived. Bivariate Correlated Wishart density follows on similar lines.

Abstract: Bauhinia variegata linn. (Kachnar/Raktakanchan) is a medium sized tree with hairy branches belonging to family Leguminosae. The various parts of trees like flowers buds, flowers, stem bark, stem, leaves, seeds and root are popular in various system of medicines like ayurveda, unani and homeopathy in India for the cure of variety of diseases. This is widely used for the manufacture of wood wool board, production of gum and fibers and for a forestation to conserve the nature. Various traditional claims have been made on this tree for curing in number of diseases; considerable efforts have been made by researcher to verify its utility through scientific pharmacological screenings. The reported biological activities are anti-diabetic activity, anti-inflammatory activity, immune-modulatory activity, anti-tumour activity, hepatoprotective activity, antibacterial activity, haemagglutinating activity, haematinic activity, antimicrobial activity, antiulcer activity, anticarcinogenic activity. This review represents a detailed survey of the literature on pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, traditional, medicinal uses and pharmacological activities of Bauhinia variegata Linn.

Abstract: Qualitative research was the preserve of social scientists before making inroads into medical sciences, as the medical fraternity was wedded to evidence-based medicine. Qualitative research methods are now being increasingly used in medicine. The goal of qualitative research is to help in the understanding of social phenomenon in their natural settings. These methods help to unravel mysteries relating to complex human interactions and to study the role of human behaviour in health and disease. Recent evidence points to the complementary roles of qualitative and quantitative methods in medical research. Qualitative methods include observations, interviews, focus groups, projective techniques, analysis of personal documents and accounts, sorting and ranking, and case studies. This communication describes the application of qualitative methods in ophthalmic research
Antiinflammatory activity of tenoxicam gel on carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats

Abstract: Tenoxicam is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, used in the treatment of inflammatory and degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system. It is from the oxicam group of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents. It is widely prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, extra-articular disorders, bursitis, tendonitis, and nonarticular rheumatic condition. Tenoxicam has some side effects when taken orally, viz., epigastric pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, peptic ulcer, and hepatic impairment. The aim of this study was to formulate topical gel containing 1% of tenoxicam in 1% carbopol-940 and PEG-4000 and to evaluate it for antiinflammatory activity using carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats. The studies were conducted on Wistar rats of either sex (160-180 g). The change in oedema volume of the rat hind paw was measured using mercury plethysmometer. The readings were measured in terms of volume displaced in millimetre using a micropipette that has mark to 10 divisions in 1 ml. The carbopol gel formulation of tenoxicam containing 15% of ethanol and 5% of sodium lauryl sulphate was significantly more effective against oedema formation than the other formulation of tenoxicam gel and compared to the marketed product of piroxicam gel. Results suggest that the 1% tenoxicam gel in carbopol-940 inhibited 52% of carrageenan-induced oedema formation as compared with the 44% inhibition obtained with marketed product of piroxicam gel.
