An Exploratory Case Study in Designing and Implementing Tight Versus Loose Frameworks  [PDF]
Manjari GUPTA, Ratneshwer GUPTA, A. K. TRIPATHI
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2009, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2009.23029
Abstract: Frameworks provide large scale reuse by providing skeleton structure of similar applications. But the generality, that a framework may have, makes it fairly complex, hard to understand and thus to reuse. Frameworks have been classified according to many criteria. This paper proposes two types of framework (based on the concept of ‘generality’) named as: tight framework and loose framework. A case study is done by developing loose and tight frameworks for the appli-cation sets of Environment for Unit testing (EUT) domain. Based on the experience that we got by during this case study, we tried to find out the benefits of one (tight or loose) framework over the other. This work attempts to provide an initial background for meaningful studies related to the concept of ‘Design and Development of Framework’.

Monitoring the injured brain in the intensive care unit.

Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 2002,
Abstract: The primary aim of managing patients with acute brain injury in the intensive care unit is to minimise secondary injury by maintaining cerebral perfusion and oxygenation. The mechanisms of secondary injury are frequently triggered by secondary insults, which may be subtle and remain undetected by the usual systemic physiological monitoring. Continuous monitoring of the central nervous system in the intensive care unit can serve two functions. Firstly it will help early detection of these secondary cerebral insults so that appropriate interventions can be instituted. Secondly, it can help to monitor therapeutic interventions and provide online feedback. This review focuses on the monitoring of intracranial pressure, blood flow to the brain (Transcranial Doppler), cerebral oxygenation using the methods of jugular bulb oximetry, near infrared spectroscopy and implantable sensors, and the monitoring of function using electrophysiological techniques.
Modified Grover's search algorithm for the cases where the number of solutions is known
A. S. Gupta,M. Gupta,A. Pathak
Physics , 2005,
Abstract: Grover's search algorithm searches a database of $N$ unsorted items in $O(\sqrt{N/M})$ steps where $M$ represents the number of solutions to the search problem. This paper proposes a scheme for searching a database of $N$ unsorted items in $O(logN)$ steps, provided the value of $M$ is known. It is also shown that when $M$ is unknown but if we can estimate an upper bound of possible values of $M$, then an improvement in the time complexity of conventional Grover's algorithm is possible. In that case, the present scheme reduces the time complexity to $O(MlogN)$.
Application of energy storage devices in power systems
R Gupta, N Nigam, A Gupta
International Journal of Engineering, Science and Technology , 2011,
Abstract: In Electric Power systems, power quality has been one of the issues of increasing interests. Energy storage does not mean just the energy sources but they also provide the added benefits of improving power quality, dynamic and transient stability and also the reliability of the supply. Some of the major disadvantages in electric power supply system have been flickering and deviations in power supply which make some of the electronic equipments and domestic devices highly sensitive to it. To avoid such problems we need to find out devices that can provide a backup during the time of voltage sags and such deviations. The paper concentrates on performance benefits of adding energy storage to power electronic compensators for utility applications. The paper concerns on analysis of various energy storage devices on the basis of different parameters out of which Superconducting magnetic energy storage technology and Super capacitor energy storage has become an alternative for conventional solutions with negligible losses. Flywheel is used for non polluting uninterruptible power supply. For large scale storage, Underground thermal, Compressed air and Pumped hydrogen are preferred but it is difficult to compare all these devices as none of them are optimal for all applications.
Predicting mortality in stroke.

Neurology India , 2002,
Abstract: Physicians are faced with the task of predicting the immediate and long term outcome in stroke patients. It is also important to efficiently and optimally utilize resources. We used APACHE III scoring system or predicting in hospital outcome in patients with stroke. We found it to be sensitive (>90%) and resonably specific (73%) in predicting short term, in-hospital mortality, in our study group.

Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 2010,
Abstract: Hyper-IgE syndrome is a congenitally acquired primary immune deficiency condition. We report a case of possible hyper-IgE syndrome who presented with multiple cold skin abscesses and chest infection due to Staphylococcus aureus and hyper-IgE findings. Patient also had tricuspid valve acute bacterial endocarditis with purulent pericarditis which is very rare. This case is presented to highlight that early diagnosis and treatment in such cases decreases the mortality and morbidity in phagocytic disorders.
