State Rescaling, Contested Space, and Inequality in the Globalizing City-regions of China: Conceptual Issues and Empirical Evidence

Abstract: In post-reform China, the spatial forms of cities are defined by two combined forces—a downward decentralization of responsibility for economic development, and an upward centralization of power to larger urban cores. This process of administrative rescaling is creating an “entrepreneurial urban space” in the city cores and “commercialized towns and villages” in the city margins (McGee et al. 2007). As a result of the rescaling, a form of contested space has emerged, mostly in cities and their immediate margins, where local civil society is constantly resisting or adapting to the Chinese urban expansion manifested through territorial reorganization and boundary redefinition. Cities’ inner margins (suburbs) have in particular seen the most dramatic increases in population and manufacturing due to migration, housing development, and industrial relocation. This paper seeks to provide a close dissection of the process of rescaling and the production of these contested urban spaces through a spatial lens. In adopting a comparative and case study approach, this paper analyzes census data from three large city-regions in China: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to explore two questions: (1) whether this rescaling is creating segmentation, displacement, or polarization in residence and work spaces; and (2) at which scales (district or community) these spatial outcomes are unfolding. The paper concludes that inequalities are increasingly concentrated in the inner margins, where an entrepreneurial city core meets the self-initiated urban expansion of the towns in the outer margins, and farmers, displaced urbanites, rural migrants, and foreign workers aggregate and compete for space.

Abstract: Artificial Searching Swarm Algorithm (ASSA) is a new optimization algorithm. ASSA simulates the soldiers to search an enemy’s important goal, and transforms the process of solving optimization problem into the process of searching optimal goal by searching swarm with set rules. This work selects complicated and highn dimension functions to deeply analyse the performance for unconstrained and constrained optimization problems and the results produced by ASSA, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Artificial Fish-Swarm Algorithm (AFSA) have been compared. The main factors which influence the performance of ASSA are also discussed. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ASSA optimization algorithm.

Abstract: Physical intensive course construction is an important component of the teaching quality and teaching reform in colleges and universities. In this study, after reviewingliterature and applying computer network technology, PPT, Authorware, Flash, Windows movie maker, dartfish, super king and other educational softwares, taking Jiangxi Normal University college tennis intensive courses as an example, we research on how to design an online platform for the college tennis intensive course in a university.  In tennis professional intensive courses online teaching design, we must first recognize that tennis is a sports skills curriculum based on body movements as the carrier, commonly known as \"technology class”. Secondly, teachers should effectively use information equipment and information resources, so that they can have the abilities to process information, create new information, and do research. They should also focus on teaching objectives. Network instructional designrequires students to actively participate in the interaction and form their own characteristics and style. Thirdly, making an interactive platform of the students' skill level evaluation and diagnosis can avoid students' cognitive performance remaining at an only digital cinema demo viewing stage, thus achieving scientificalness, consistency, and effectiveness in the tennis teaching evaluation. In the future, the construction of the university physical intensive courses, applications and practice of online teaching design requires constantly integration and innovation from teaching concepts, theoretical models and change in methods.
Investigating the English Proficiency of Learners: A Corpus-Based Study of Contrastive Discourse Markers in China  [PDF]

Abstract: Discourse markers signal the relationship between the neighboring sentences. The present comparative study investigates the use of Contrastive Discourse Markers between Chinese English learners and native speakers based on corpus data. Special attention is allocated to but and however, since these two small words are the most popular discourse markers in Chinese English Learners and Native Speakers. Quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate that both groups prefer to employ discourse markers like but, although, (even) though, however, etc. when signaling a contrastive relationship between S1 and S2, though they have different priorities in different contextual situation; besides, but is overused significantly by Chinese English Learners to signal a contrastive relationship rather than add further information in context; lastly, Chinese English Learner usually employs however at the beginning of the sentence, while native speakers put it both at the beginning or middle of the sentences, which both signal the relationship between topics and messages. The findings also suggest that more detailed instructions should be delivered on the procedural meanings and syntactical positions of Contrastive Discourse Markers used in context.
State-Dependence and Conditional Audit Policy  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper investigates how the state-dependence between two periods affects the optimal audit decision. Using a principal-agent model, based on a state-dependent assumption, we find that it is desirable to use a conditional (punitive) audit mechanism when the agent’s under-declaration benefit is significant and the principal’s audit cost is moderate. In that case, the audit policy for the current period will be contingent on the audit result in the preceding period.
Tobacco OPBP1 Enhances Salt Tolerance and Disease Resistance of Transgenic Rice

Abstract: Osmotin promoter binding protein 1 (OPBP1), an AP2/ERF transcription factor of tobacco, has been demonstrated to function in disease resistance and salt tolerance in tobacco. To increase stress tolerant capability of rice, we generated rice plants with an OPBP1 overexpressing construct. Salinity shock treatment with 250 mM NaCl indicated that most of the OPBP1 transgenic plants can survive, whereas the control seedlings cannot. Similar recovery was found by using the seedlings grown in 200 mM NaCl for two weeks. The OPBP1 transgenic and control plants were also studied for oxidative stress tolerance by treatment with paraquat, showing the transgenic lines were damaged less in comparison with the control plants. Further, the OPBP1 overexpression lines exhibited enhanced resistance to infections of Magnaporthe oryzae and Rhizoctonia solani pathogens. Gene expressing analysis showed increase in mRNA accumulation of several stress related genes. These results suggest that expression of OPBP1 gene increase the detoxification capability of rice.

Abstract: Chronic liver fibrosis,an important step in the development of liver diseases,is an anaplerotic reaction of an organism to chronic liver damage caused by various kinds of pathogens.It is a common pathologic change in chronic liver diseases and the intermediate link in the development of liver cirrhosis.Liver fibrosis can be reversed in the early stage,as well as in the later stage.Cases of liver cirrhosis that are confirmed during the earlier stage can be treated and prognosticated more efficiently.Currently,liver biopsy is still the gold standard for diagnosing liver fibrosis.However,its invasiveness causes patients to refuse the examination.Noninvasive diagnostic technology for liver fibrosis has made considerable development in recent years.One of these technologies is transient elastography(FibroScan) of liver stiffness using elastic shear wave,which has good accuracy and specificity for the determination of liver fibrosis.It is noninvasive,fast,repeatable,and it can evaluate liver fibrosis objectively and quantitatively.It will have a broad range of clinical applications in the future.

Abstract: Industrial biotechnology has not developed as fast as expected due to some challenges including the emergences of alternative energy sources, especially shale gas, natural gas hydrate (or gas hydrate) and sand oil et al. The weaknesses of microbial or enzymatic processes compared with the chemical processing also make industrial biotech products less competitive with the chemical ones. However, many opportunities are still there if industrial biotech processes can be as similar as the chemical ones. Taking advantages of the molecular biology and synthetic biology methods as well as changing process patterns, we can develop bioprocesses as competitive as chemical ones, these including the minimized cells, open and continuous fermentation processes et al.
Image Resolution Enhancement Using PCA Based Post Filtering

Abstract: In this study an image resolution enhancement method is presented that uses the NEDI method to generate an initial image. To increase the detail of this initial image, the given low resolution image is fused with it to achieve a new image. Then the final high resolution image is obtained by using a PCA based filtering to reduce the distortion of this new image. Experimental results on test images demonstrate that the proposed method provides competitive performance.
