De pés descal?os no ciberespa?o: tecnologia e cultura no cotidiano de um grupo social on-line
Guimares Jr., Mário J. L.;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832004000100006
Abstract: sometimes categories employed analytically are drawn from their "lay" use with a lack of further reflection on their appropriateness. the range of categories based in the distinction between technology and society is just an example of these phenomena. this paper brings to attention some issues regarding the analytical value of distinctions such as between culture and technology, taking avatars, virtual bodies employed at social environments in cyberspace, as an example. the ethnography of two aspects of an on-line social group illustrate how users of avatar-related technologies creatively shape those technologies features in order to made them suitable to their local cultural contexts. furthermore, the relationship between users and developers of such technologies reveal in what extent the boundaries between technology and culture are, indeed, rather blurred.

Composition of mixed flocks of understory forest birds in areas of the Atlantic coast and lowlands of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil
Ivo Rohling Ghizoni-Jr.,Marcos Antonio Guimares Azevedo
Biotemas , 2006,
Abstract: An accompaniment of forest mixed flocks was carried in two localities of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, one on a forest hillside of the Atlantic on the Island of Santa Catarina (June to September, 2000) and another in a quaternary plain forest of the Volta Velha Reserve, Itapoá (June to November, 2000). Sixty-four species of birds were registered from the 79 identified flocks, 33 of which showed a frequency of occurrence above 10%. The flocks had an average number of six species. The nuclear species responsible for the aggregation and compacting of the flocks, for the two localities was Basileuterus culicivorus. The mixed flocks presented little difference in their composition in the two areas. This is probably due to the history of the colonization and the distinct forest formations of the two areas involved.
Density profile, velocity anisotropy and line-of-sight external convergence of SLACS gravitational lenses
Antonio C. C. Guimares,Laerte Sodré Jr.
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/728/1/33
Abstract: Data from 58 strong-lensing events surveyed by the Sloan Lens ACS Survey are used to estimate the projected galaxy mass inside their Einstein radii by two independent methods: stellar dynamics and strong gravitational lensing. We perform a joint analysis of these two estimates inside models with up to three degrees of freedom with respect to the lens density profile, stellar velocity anisotropy, and line-of-sight (LOS) external convergence, which incorporates the effect of the large-scale structure on strong lensing. A Bayesian analysis is employed to estimate the model parameters, evaluate their significance and compare models. We find that the data favor Jaffe's light profile over Hernquist's, but that any particular choice between these two does not change the qualitative conclusions with respect to the features of the system that we investigate. The density profile is compatible with an isothermal, being sightly steeper and having an uncertainty in the logarithmic slope of the order of 5% in models that take into account a prior ignorance on anisotropy and external convergence. We identify a considerable degeneracy between the density profile slope and the anisotropy parameter, which largely increases the uncertainties in the estimates of these parameters, but we encounter no evidence in favor of an anisotropic velocity distribution on average for the whole sample. An LOS external convergence following a prior probability distribution given by cosmology has a small effect on the estimation of the lens density profile, but can increase the dispersion of its value by nearly 40%.

Abstract:

This study was conducted to evaluate the physiological quality of forage seeds after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, as well as the emergence of seedlings derived from these seeds. Three Fabaceae species were used: tropical kudzu, leucaena and calopo. One hundred grams of seeds of each species were offered, separately, to five bovines. After the start of the dispersion, the faeces of the animals were collected every 6 hours, in a total of 72 hours, being taken to the greenhouse immediately after each collection. The study evaluated the total number of seedlings in the stool, the lengths of roots and aerial parts, as well as the natural and dry seedling weight thirty days after the disposal of the faeces in the greenhouse. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with twelve treatments (sampling periods) and five replications (cattle). The best performance for the total number of seedlings in the faeces of cattle was observed in the kudzu species. The length of the root, length of the aerial part and dry matter seedling weight was observed in the leucaena species, followed by kudzu. The calopo showed low results for all variables due to the high degradation of the seeds.

Desempenho da colhedora de milho Penha CLM-350: parte I - sistema espigador

Abstract: this work was designed with the aim of evaluating the performance of the penha clm-350 corn combine, to furnish data to designers and users. the efficiency of the ear picking system was studied, and the percentage of the harvested corn was determined for the various treatments considered. a dimensionless u parameter was defined as the ratio between the peripheral speed of the snapping rolls and the speed of the harvester. the u terms were related to the percentages of corn harvested and corn lost on the ground. the analysis of variance with the f test at 1% and 5% probability levels was utilized to analyse the data, and tukey's test was utilized for comparison between means. the statistical analysis showed that the treatment were not significant for the percentage of harvested corn, the efficiency maintained above 84,42% for the test conditions. for the conditions tested the values were limited by mechanical characteristics of the combine, particularly the transmission ratio. this suggests the design of a mechanism, which should provide the possibility of changing the transmission ratio from the tractor power take-off to the snapping rolls. this would provide a wider range of variation for u and could provide a mathematical relationship with efficiency.

Abstract: this work deals with the effect of the shelling system of a corn harvester on the quality of corn kernels. the mechanical damage, both visible and invisible were evaluated, the last one using germination tests. the moisture content of the kernels for each treatment was determined. the peripheral velocity of the shelling cylinder was defined considering the diameter (300 mm) and the angular velocity for the various treatments. the statistical design used was randomized blocks with 5 treatments and 6 repetitions to study the percentage values of whole and broken kernels, the correspondent moisture content and germination values. the f test at 1% and 5% probability level and tukey's test were used for comparison between means. from the analysis it is possible to conclude that the effect of moisture content was not statistically significant with an average moisture content of 15,78%. the comparions between means showed that there are highly significant differences for the peripheral velocity of the shelling cylinder on the percentage of whole kernels, it could be assumed that there was an inverse relation between those two parameters for the conditions tested. the germination test which was used to characterize invisible damage showed significant differences for some of the treatments. the results indicated an inverse relation between peripheral velocity of the shelling cylinder and the percentage of germination of the whole kernels. some influence of the material flow through the shelling system was detected suggesting further studies of this phenomenon if these harvesters are to be used to harvest corn seed.

Abstract: with the aim of quantifying the shelling" and cleaning systems performance for the penha clm-350 harvester, the percentage of loss of corn kernels, which octirred in the straw outlet was determined, as well as, the percentage of debris, in the packaged corn. taking the corn kernels harvested by the snapping rolls as 100%, the percentage of loss from the shelling and cleaning systems were determined, as well as, the percentage of debris in the packaged corn for the various treatments. the average moisture content for the corn was 15,78% (w.b.). the corresponding treatments for the shelling and cleaning" systems are the tangencial velocity of the shelling cylinder, or the angular velocity of the aspirator considering the geometric configuration of the machine. the analysis of variance with the f tests at 1% e 5% probability level were used to analyse the data, and tukey's test was used for comparison between means. the statistical analysis showed that the angular velocity of the aspirator, related to the percentage of loss in the straw outlet, was highly significant, making possible the assumption of a linear relationship between the two parameters for the testing conditions. the comparison between means showed that the percentage of debris in the packaged corn were significant for the treatments d (1241,7 rpm) and e(820 rpm), the last one with the higher mean. a more accurate analysis of the data sugests that the percentage of debris, would depend more on the material flow through the harvester, than the rotation of the feeding auger.
