Structured abstracts: narrative review
Guimares, Carlos Alberto;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502006000400014
Abstract: purpose: to summarize the main findings from research on structured abstracts. methods: a narrative review of all the relevant papers known to the author was conducted. results: authors and readers judged the structured abstracts to be more useful than traditional ones. in 1987 the ad hoc working group for critical appraisal of the medical literature proposed guidelines for informative seven-headings abstracts. in 1990 haynes et al. reconsidered the structured abstract of clinical research and review articles and proposed revised guidelines. nowadays, most abstracts are informative, and the most commonly used structure is imrad (introduction, methods, results and discussion) format. conclusions: there are many variations in the structured-abstract formats prescribed by different journals. but even in recent years, not all abstracts of original articles are structured. more research is needed on a number of questions related to the quality and utility of structured abstracts.
Registro dos ensaios clínicos
Guimares, Carlos Alberto;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912007000300012
Abstract: the international committee of medical journal editors (icmje) proposed trials registration in a public trials registry, as a condition for publication. this policy started after july 1, 2005, and was supported by the world association of medical editors (wame). in may 19, 2006, the who urged research institutions and companies to register all medical studies that test treatments on human beings, whether they involve patients or healthy volunteers. the who also started the international clinical trials registry platform (ictrp), aimed at standardizing the way information of studies is made available to the public. the following registers contribute data directly to the who search portal: australian clinical trials registry, clinicaltrials.gov, and international standard randomized controlled trial number register. in may 15, 2007, the latin american and caribbean center on health sciences information (bireme) published a recommendation for editors of health journals indexed in latin american and caribbean literature on health sciences (lilacs) and scientific library electronic online (scielo) about registration of clinical trials. in addition to the umin clinical trial registry and the nederlands trial register, the icmje is now accepting registration in any of the primary registers that participate in the who ictrp. the icmje is also adopting the who's definition of clinical trial. three years ago, trials registration was the exception; now it is the rule. registration facilitates the dissemination of information, and it helps to assure trial participants that the information that accrues as a result of their altruism will become part of the public record.

Abstract: surgeons are told that they need not only read journal articles, but also understand them and make a critical appraisal of their validity. they offer better care if they are able to appraise critically the original literature and apply the results to their practice. this is the second article of a series - evidence-based surgical practices - which focus on critical appraisal of a diagnostic test.
