Neuromorphic Configurable Architecture for Robust Motion Estimation
Guillermo Botella,Manuel Rodríguez,Antonio García,Eduardo Ros
International Journal of Reconfigurable Computing , 2008, DOI: 10.1155/2008/428265
Abstract: The robustness of the human visual system recovering motion estimation in almost any visual situation is enviable, performing enormous calculation tasks continuously, robustly, efficiently, and effortlessly. There is obviously a great deal we can learn from our own visual system. Currently, there are several optical flow algorithms, although none of them deals efficiently with noise, illumination changes, second-order motion, occlusions, and so on. The main contribution of this work is the efficient implementation of a biologically inspired motion algorithm that borrows nature templates as inspiration in the design of architectures and makes use of a specific model of human visual motion perception: Multichannel Gradient Model (McGM). This novel customizable architecture of a neuromorphic robust optical flow can be constructed with FPGA or ASIC device using properties of the cortical motion pathway, constituting a useful framework for building future complex bioinspired systems running in real time with high computational complexity. This work includes the resource usage and performance data, and the comparison with actual systems. This hardware has many application fields like object recognition, navigation, or tracking in difficult environments due to its bioinspired and robustness properties.

Abstract: In order to assess the impact of the early and late tissue repair of Kombucha extract on incised wounds in animal models, 24 Wistar male rats were used and divided into three groups: one of the groups received a topical cure on the wound with Brosin, and the other received the Kombucha extract. The third group did not receive any treatment, working as a control group. The objective was to evaluate and compare the Kombucha extract with a commercial healing product. Each one of the animals took a 1 cm wound in depth and length at a femur level on a side of the left thigh. The healing process was evaluated on an early and late phase by performing a morphometric and morphological analysis under the assumption of a faster recovery with the use of Kombucha. The results showed that there was a poor recovery in the control group. On the other hand, the other two groups, Brosin and Kombucha, were similar, with little inflammation and a high cell proliferation and migration along with basal array pulls of elastin and collagen which served for angiogenesis, repair and renovation of the new tissue.
Spatial structure and scale-dependent microhabitat use of endemic "tapaculos" (Rhinocryptidae) in a temperate forest of southern South America

Ecolog?-a austral , 2008,
Abstract: endemic tapaculo birds (rhinocryptidae) are biological indicators of habitat degradation in the temperate forest of southern south america, but little is known about the physiognomical features that determine the use of space in natural habitats. we studied the spatial structure and the microhabitat use at different spatial scales of species of tapaculos in a well-conserved forest of nw patagonia (argentina). we recorded the abundance of tapaculos and forest characteristics along a 1500 m transect divided in 75, 20 x 20 m contiguous plots. we evaluated the spatial patchiness in abundance of birds by moran's i correlograms. we disentangled the spatial variability of bird abundance at three different, progressively finer (broad, intermediate, fine), spatial scales by using principal coordinates of neighbour matrices analysis (pcnm). we assessed the microhabitat use of each bird species with stepwise regression analyses using habitat physiognomical features as independent variables and bird abundance predicted by pcnm at each spatial scale as dependent variables. the clumps of scelorchilus rubecula were smaller and more regularly distributed than those of pteroptochos tarnii. the pcnm analysis detected significant spatial variation at the different scales for both bird species. microhabitat use was only evident at the broadest spatial scale, but differed between bird species. scelorchilus rubecula used areas with higher tree cover and woody plant volume but lower abundance of fallen branches, whereas p. tarnii was found mostly in areas of higher abundance of branches but lower woody plant volume and plant species richness. the differences between bird species in the use of space can also be interpreted in terms of differences in body size, family system and feeding behaviour. the management of this temperate forest needs to consider the scale- and species-specific response of endemic tapaculos to habitat features in order to predict their response to the changes in het

Mastozoolog?-a neotropical , 2010,
Abstract: the association among different morphotypes and locomotor types and habitat preference has been repeatedly mentioned in the sigmodontine literature; however, those associations have been seldom tested. the goal of the present study was to morphologically characterize and compare sigmodontines from venezuelan guayana in relation to their type of locomotion and habitat. specimens belonging to 13 genera were classified on the basis of locomotion (terrestrial, climbing-arboreal, and semiaquatic) and habitat preference (forest and open areas). ten body measurements were recorded and features of the ears, fore- and hindfoot, rostral vibrissae, and tail scales were scored. a principal component analysis distinguishes three groups: a) one composed of terrestrial forms from open areas (necromys, sigmodon, zygodontomys, and calomys); b) another form by semiaquatic genera (neusticomys, holochilus, and nectomys); and c) the last one form by genera from forested areas plus oligoryzomys. a cluster analysis defines two main groups: one formed by groups a (except calomys) and b (except neusticomys) and the other containing calomys, neusticomys, and the group c that in turns is subdivided into a subgroup of terrestrial forms and a subgroup of climbing-arboreal forms. taken as a whole our results show that genera from a particular habitat are more similar to each other than to genera from other areas or those that posses a different locomotion type. members of each of these three groups are not more closely related among them than to members of other groups. therefore, inferring sigmodontine phylogenetic relationships from external characters should be undertaken with caution.
