Tubulointerstitial Macrophage Accumulation is Regulated by Sequentially Expressed Osteopontin and Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor: Implication for the Role of Atorvastatin

Abstract: Infiltration and local proliferation are known factors that contribute to tubulointerstitial macrophage accumulation. This study explored the time course of these two contributors' roles as tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis progressing, and evaluated the mechanisms of the protective effect of atorvastatin. Unilateral ureteral obstructive (UUO) rats were treated with atorvastatin (10 mg/Kg) or vehicle. Expression of osteopontin (OPN) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) was evaluated by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemistry staining of ED1 was used to assess macrophage accumulation in interstitium. Histological evaluation was performed to semiquantify tubulointerstitial fibrosis. The results showed that on day 3 after UUO operation, OPN expression significantly increased and positively correlated with the number of the interstitial ED1

Abstract: Infiltration and local proliferation are known factors that contribute to tubulointerstitial macrophage accumulation. Unilateral ureteral obstructive (UUO) rats were treated with atorvastatin (10 mg/Kg) or vehicle. Expression of osteopontin (OPN) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) was evaluated by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemistry staining of ED1 was used to assess macrophage accumulation in interstitium. Histological evaluation was performed to semiquantify tubulointerstitial fibrosis. The results showed that on day 3 after UUO operation, OPN expression significantly increased and positively correlated with the number of the interstitial ED1+ cells, while on day 10, M-CSF expression upregulated and correlated with interstitial ED1 + cells. In atorvastatin treatment group, the increments of these two factors were attenuated significantly at the two time points, respectively. ED1+ cell accumulation and fibrosis also ameliorated in the treatment group. For all the samples of UUO and treatment group on day 10, ED 1+ cells also correlated with interstitial fibrosis scores. The results suggest that OPN may induce the early macrophage/monocyte infiltration and M-CSF may play an important role in regulating macrophage accumulation in later stage of UUO nephropathy. Statin treatment decreases interstitial inflammation and fibrosis, and this renoprotective effect may be mediated by downregulating the expression of OPN and M-CSF.
Defect Core Structures in Twisted Nematic and Twisted Chiral Liquid Crystals  [PDF]

Abstract:

The defect structures of s = ±1/2 twist disclinations in twisted nematic and twisted chiral liquid crystals have been investigated within the Landau-de Gennes theory numerically. Our results show that there exists eigenvalue exchange across the defect core of both the two models. The defect core is essentially biaxial and never isotropic. The defect centre is uniaxial and is surrounded by a strong biaxial region.

A gigantic jet event observed over a thunderstorm in mainland China

Abstract: Gigantic jet (GJ) is a type of large-scaled transient discharge which occurs above thunderstorms. It connects the thunderstorms and ionosphere directly. Compared with the other transient luminous events (TLEs), gigantic jet is very difficult to be seen from the ground. We report a GJ event that was clearly recorded in eastern China (storm center located at 35.6°N,119.8°E, near the Huanghai Sea) at 20:16:22 (local time) on 12 August, 2010. It is by far the furthest from the equator ground-based GJ recorded over summer thunderstorm. The top altitude of this GJ was estimated to be about 89 km. The GJ-producing storm was a multi-cell thunderstorm and the GJ event occurred in the storm developing stage, with the lowest cloud-top brightness temperature about 73°C and the maximum radar echo top around 17 km. Altitudes with reflectivity of 45 dBZ were estimated to reach 12–14 km. Different from results from other countries that positive CGs (Cloud-to-ground lightnings) dominated during a time period centered at GJ, our study shows that negative CGs dominated during a time period centered at the GJ event and during most of the storm lifetime in this study, indicating a diversity of the lightning activity in the GJ-producing storms. It is interesting that two different storms produced two types of TLEs, that is, the GJ-producing storm only produced one GJ event during its lifetime and five sprites were produced over another storm, different from the other study that sprites and GJs were usually produced by the same storm, enriched the knowledge of GJ-producing storms. In addition, the GJ event in this study is located beyond the effective coverage area (30°S–30°N) of the ISUAL instruments onboard the FORMOSAT II satellite, and results of this study could be useful for GJ studies in the future.
The Design for Feed Water System of Boiler Based on Fuzzy Immune Smith Control

Abstract: Aiming at the uncertainty of model parameters and dominate time delay of the controlled object in feed water system of boiler, combined with improved Smith predictor control method and fuzzy immune PID control method, improved Smith predicting controller based on fuzzy immune is designed.Fuzzy Immune PID controller can self-tune parameters, and has adaptive capacity to the diversification of controlled object parameters. When there is the phenomenon of large delay, the predictor estimates in advance the dynamic characteristics of the process under basic disturbance, so that regulator takes action ahead of time to reduce the overshoot. The designed controller is applied to the feed water cascade control system, and is simulated by Matlab under different operating conditions. Simulation results show that the designed control system has strong adaptive ability to the diversification of model parameters. And its stability, accuracy are superior to that of conventional Smith control system. The effectiveness of this designed controller has been confirmed.
The Design for the Boiler Drum Level System Based on Immune Control

Abstract: Aiming at multi-disturbance characteristic of drum water level system, control system uses three impulse cascade control strategy. This paper designs three impulse cascade control combined of incomplete differential PID and immune P control, fully using the advantages of artificial immune feedback control and incomplete differential PID. Boiler drum level simulation result shows the cascade control based on immune feedback mechanism, can improve the system dynamic performance. The simulation results also prove the validity of the control strategy.

Abstract: The electronic structure of ferrite (tempered martensite phase) in high Co-Ni secondary hardened martensitic steel has been investigated. The local density of states (LDOS) of alloying elements in the steel displays the relationship between solid solubility and the shape of the LDOS. The bond order integral (BOI) between atoms in the steel shows that the directional bonding of the p orbital of Si or C leads to the brittleness of the steel. At last, Sigma BOI between atoms demonstrate that C, Co, Mn, Cr, Mo, Si strengthen the alloyed steel through solid-solution effects.

Abstract: 利用递归法(Recursion)计算了α-Ti中刃位错及裂纹区的电子结构(Fermi能级、结构能、环境敏感镶嵌能等),计算并分析了合金元素Mo,V对α-Ti与β-Ti相原子结合能的影响.结果表明:氢原子在位错处的环境敏感镶嵌能较低,易于在位错处聚积,形成氢原子气团.裂纹尖端Fermi能级高于裂纹其他区域,电子从裂纹尖端流向裂纹其他区域造成电位差,在电解质作用下裂纹尖端阳极分解腐蚀.拉应力与裂纹处的氢气压使裂纹解理或沿晶延伸,促进应力腐蚀的发展.合金元素Mo,V有利于α-Ti合金中β相的形成,阻止裂纹在α相中扩展,提高合金应力腐蚀抗力.
