Bioecological characteristics and endangerment mechanisms of Neocheiropteris palmatopedata,an endangered plant endemic to China

Abstract: 扇蕨(Neocheiropteris palmatopedata)目前仅零星分布于我国的四川、贵州和云南, 其种群数量日趋减少, 濒临灭绝, 已被列为国家二级保护植物。我们在对扇蕨的种群生态及群落特征、萌发和生长特性、土壤性质研究的基础上分析了导致其濒危的因素。结果表明: 扇蕨生长在原生性强的常绿阔叶林和针阔混交林下, 在群落中处于受支配的地位。扇蕨的孢子无休眠期, 萌发率较高, 因此孢子萌发不是导致其濒危的原因。但扇蕨在自然条件下完成其生命周期所需时间长,易受自然灾害如旱灾等的影响, 导致孢子成苗率极低。虽然扇蕨萌生能力强,但利用根状茎繁殖不能扩展其分布范围。扇蕨生境土壤化学成分分析结果表明,有机质、有效钙、有效镁、有效硼是影响扇蕨生长发育的关键土壤因子。总之, 扇蕨自身特殊的生物生态学特性使其生存竞争力低是其濒危最主要和最直接的原因,而人类活动导致的生境丧失及相伴的生境片断化加速了这一物种的濒危。
Antioxidant Effect of Roasted Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Grain Extract towards Oxidative Stress in Vitro and in Vivo  [PDF]

Abstract: The antioxidant activity of extract from roasted barley grain was evaluated by various methods in vitro and in vivo. Results showed that the extract exhibited high antioxidant activities in vitro and in vivo, evidenced by its ability to chelate ferrous ions, scavenge hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and prevent lipid peroxidation of liver homogenate. The extract significantly increased the total antioxidant capability (T-AOC) in aged mice (P < 0.05). The activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) increased while levels of malondialodehyde (MDA) and manoamine oxidase (MAO) decreased in both the liver and brain of aged mice treated with the extract compared to the control (untreated mice). The results demonstrate potential antioxidant activities and antiaging effect of roasted barley grain. This provides scientific support for the use of roasted barley grain as an antioxidant against oxidative stress.
Antibody against Interferon-α 2b in Serum of the Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C and its Clinical Significance: A Clinical Trial

Abstract: Background and Aims: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is treated with alpha interferon (IFN-α). The mechanisms by which IFN-α suppresses HCV replication are not well-known; only limited benefits are achieved with the therapy because the virus in turn, directs some mechanisms to resist the host IFN-α response. The present study was undertaken to determine the therapeutic effects of IFN-α 2b and to measure the serum level of antibody against IFN-α 2b (anti-IFN-α 2b) after treatment with IFN-α 2b in patients with chronic hepatitis C.Methods: The levels of HCV antibody (anti-HCV), HCV-RNA and anti-IFN-α 2b immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum of 94 patients with chronic hepatitis C who were treated with IFN-α 2b (three 3-MU injections per week for 3 months), were measured in different courses of treatment.Results: The total negative rates for anti-HCV and HCV-RNA were 33% (31/94) and 38% (36/94) in patients treated with IFN-α 2b, respectively. The rates for those treated with routine medications were 10% (4/40), 15% (6/40), respectively (P<0.01). After the first, second and third course of treatment with IFN-α 2b, the negative rates of anti-HCV, HCV-RNA in serum were 0% (0/94), 15% (14/94) and 21% (20/94), 23% (22/94) and 33% (31/94), 38% (36/94), respectively. After the treatment with IFN-α 2b, the total positive rate of anti-IFN-α 2b IgG was 5% (5/94). There was no significant difference between the two treatment groups (P>0.05). Among them, after treatment with IFN-α 2b for three, six and 12 months, the positive rates of anti-IFN-α 2b IgG were 0% (0/94), 2% (2/94), 5% (5/94), respectively. The productive ability of anti-IFN-α2b IgG was similar during the different courses of treatment with IFN-α 2b (P>0.05).Conclusions: IFN-α 2b has curative effect for patients with chronic hepatitis C and its therapeutic efficacy is better than that of routine treatments. Although IFN-α 2b has certain antigenicity, anti-IFN-α 2b IgG production is seen in only a few of patients during the course of treatment; the restrain effect of anti-IFN-α 2b IgG on the further treatment with IFN-α 2b is weak.
Green Synthesis, Composition Analysis and Surface Active Properties of Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate  [PDF]

Cocoyl glycine was synthesized directly from coconut oil and sodium glycinate in yield of 87%. IR, ESI-MS and LC/MS analysis results showed that cocoyl glycine consists of a series of acyl glycines with different acyl chain lengths, and the proportion of each component was consistent with the composition of fatty acids derived from coconut oil. The surface tension and the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) of corresponding sodium salt were evaluated. The result showed that sodium cocoyl glycinate reduced the surface tension of water to a minimum value of approximately 33 mN·m-1 at CMC of 0.21 mmol·L-1.

Abstract: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [PtCl(C32H24N5)](ClO4)2·2CH3CN·1.5H2O, comprises two unique PtII complex cations, four perchlorate anions, four acetonitrile solvent molecules and three water molecules. The Pt atom is four-coordinated by a tridentate chelating 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine ligand and a chloride ion in a square-planar geometry with modest distortion imposed by the constraint of the terpyridyl ligand. The r.m.s. deviations from the plane comprising the four ligand donor atoms and the Pt atom are 0.0381 and 0.0472 in the two complex cations.
Data Compression for 3D Spectrum-image Data Based on Contour-Texture Decomposition

Abstract: A method of data compression for 3D spectrum-image data based on contour-texlure decomposition is described. According to the features of 3D spectrum-imagedata is produced by an imaging spectrometer. One of the 2D monochromatic imageswhich constitute the 3D spectrumimage data is decomposed into a set of contours andthe texture surounded by their contours with contour-texture decomposition. It is thefact that 3D spectrum-image data are a pile of monochromatic forages which extendalong spectral direction, one scene on ground yields the same contour in eachmonochromatic image With the exception of texture. It is enough to encodethe contours of one of the monochromatic images. For the texture variety, we encodethe polynomial coefficients corresponding each monochromatic image. The experimentwith the original 3D spectrum-image obtained by the 64 Bands Airborne ImagingSpectrometer developed by our country in the region Darwin, Australia shows that acompression ratio 379:1 can be achieved when the texture coefficients are expressed bya zero order polynomial.
Interlayer Water Regulates the Bio-nano Interface of a \b{eta}-sheet Protein stacking on Graphene

Abstract: Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated an integrated bio-nano interface consisting of a \b{eta}-sheet protein stacked onto graphene. We found that the stacking assembly of the model protein on graphene could be controlled by water molecules. The interlayer water filled within interstices of the bio-nano interface could suppress the molecular vibration of surface groups on protein, and could impair the CH...{\pi} interaction driving the attraction of the protein and graphene. The intermolecular coupling of interlayer water would be relaxed by the relative motion of protein upon graphene due to the interaction between water and protein surface. This effect reduced the hindrance of the interlayer water against the assembly of protein on graphene, resulting an appropriate adsorption status of protein on graphene with a deep free energy trap. Thereby, the confinement and the relative sliding between protein and graphene, the coupling of protein and water, and the interaction between graphene and water all have involved in the modulation of behaviors of water molecules within the bio-nano interface, governing the hindrance of interlayer water against the protein assembly on hydrophobic graphene. These results provide a deep insight into the fundamental mechanism of protein adsorption onto graphene surface in water.
Spectrums of Opportunistic Infections and Malignancies in HIV-Infected Patients in Tertiary Care Hospital, China

Abstract: Background HIV-related opportunistic infections (OIs) and malignancies continued to cause morbidity and mortality in Chinese HIV-infected individuals. The objective for this study is to elucidate the prevalence and spectrums of OIs and malignancies in HIV-infected patients in the Beijing Ditan Hospital. Methods The evaluation of the prevalence and spectrums of OIs and malignancies was conducted by using the clinical data of 834 HIV-infected patients admitted in the Beijing Ditan hospital from January 1, 2009, to November 30, 2012. Results The prevalence and spectrums of OIs and malignancies varied contingent on geographic region, transmission routes, and CD4 levels. We found that tuberculosis was most common OI and prevalence was 32.5%, followed by candidiasis(29.3%), Pneumocystis pneumonia(PCP)(22.4%), cytomegalovirus(CMV) infection(21.7%), other fungal infections(16.2%), mycobacterium avium complex(MAC)(11.3%), cryptococcosis(8.0%), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy(PML)(4.4%), Cerebral Toxoplasmosis(3.5%) and Penicillium marneffei infection(1.4%); while Lymphoma(2.9%), Kaposi’s sarcoma(0.8%) and cervix carcinoma(0.3%) were emerged as common AIDS-defining malignancies. Pulmonary OI infections were the most prevalent morbidity and mortality in patients in the AIDS stage including pulmonary tuberculosis (26.6%) and PCP (22.4%). CMV infection(21.7%) was most common viral infection; Fungal OIs were one of most prevalent morbidity in patients in the AIDS stage, including oral candidiasis (29.3%), other fungal infection (16.2%), Cryptococcosis (8.0%) and Penicillium marneffei infection (1.4%). We found the low prevalence of AIDS-defining illnesses in central neural system in this study, including progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (4.4%), cerebral toxoplasmosis (3.5%), tuberculosis meningitis (3.2%), cryptococcal meningitis (2.4%) and CMV encephalitis (1.1%). In-hospital mortality rate was 4.3 per 100 person-years due to severe OIs, malignancies, and medical cost constraints. Conclusions The prevalence and spectrums of OIs, malignancies and co-infections were discussed in this study. It would help increase the awareness for physicians to make a diagnosis and empirical treatment sooner and plan good management strategies, especially in resource limited regions.
Etiological study of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in an endemic region: a population-based case control study in Huaian, China

Abstract: A population based case-control study was conducted in 107 ESCC newly diagnosed cases and 107 residency- age-, and sex-matched controls in 5 townships of Huaian. In addition to regular epidemiological and food frequency questionnaire analyses, genetic polymorphisms of phase I enzymes CYP1A1, CYP1B1, CYP2A6, and CYP2E1, and phase II enzymes GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, and microsomal epoxide hydrolase (EPHX) were assessed from genomic DNA using PCR based techniques.Consuming acrid food, fatty meat, moldy food, salted and pickled vegetables, eating fast, introverted personality, passive smoking, a family history of cancer, esophageal lesion, and infection with Helicobacter pylori were significant risk factors for ESCC (P < 0.05). Regular clean up of food storage utensils, green tea consumption, and alcohol abstinence were protective factors for ESCC (P < 0.01). The frequency of the GSTT1 null genotype was higher in cases (59.4%) compared to controls (47.2%) with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.68 and 95% confidence interval (CI) from 0.96 to 2.97 (P = 0.07), especially in males (OR = 2.78; 95% CI = 1.22–6.25; P = 0.01). No associations were found between polymorphisms of CYP1A1, CYP1B1, CYP2A6, CYP2E1, GSTM1, GSTP1, and EPHX and ESCC (P > 0.05).Our results demonstrated that dietary and environmental exposures, some demographic parameters and genetic polymorphism of GSTT1 may play important roles in the development of ESCC in Huaian area, China.Esophageal cancer is the eighth most commonly occurring cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in the world, with the majority of cases occurring in developing countries [1]. Abstract: The phytoavailability of various fractions in the tannery sludge amended soils was investigated employing a sequential extraction procedure as well as seedling culture experiment.The results showed that 2mol/L HCl extractable Cr could be the major fraction of soil Cr available to the plants.When the Cr content in soil was about 220 mg/kg,the Cr concentration of in plant reached maximum of 23.5mg/kg,which was hardly approachable in field condition.
