OBESIDAD: EPIDEMIA DEL NUEVO MILENIO

Abstract: obesity is one of the oldest diseases in the world. nevertheless, the importance of this true epidemic and its unfortunate pathological associations have been called into attention since relatively a short time ago. even if energy storage in early times allowed survival of mankind during starvation times, the hormonal machinery responsible for this has turned against us in modern days, due to industrialization, sedentarism and overfeeding that characterises industrialized societies. therefore, the dream of our ancestors, food easily available with less physical work, has turned into a nightmare. more than 450 genes work together to produce a great number of hormonal factors that regulate energyhomeostasis, and their variation is the cornerstone of obesity. hypertrophied and dysfunctional adipocytes produce adipokines that alter glucose metabolism, predispose to the diabetes mellitus type 2 and can also damage vascular endothelium, making obesity a chronic low grade proinflammatory state. development of different strategies for treatment of this multifactorial disease necessarily implies a reduction in energy storage, and an increase in its expenditure. in the long term, definitive treatment of obesity might result from advances related to molecular biology development. nonetheless, that horizon is very distant at the present time, and knowledge of the serious complications of obesity, educational efforts, and changes in our environment and lifestyle are critical to face the challenge of obesity.

Abstract: La obesidad es una de las enfermedades más antiguas del mundo, sin embargo hasta hace relativamente poco se ha reconocido como tal, debido a su gran incidencia en la salud pública por sus características epidémicas y por las funestas asociaciones que la acompa an. Aún cuando es sus comienzos esta acumulación de energía permitió la supervivencia en épocas de hambruna, la evolución hormonal que implica este fenómeno la ha convertido en una afección epidémica, propiciada por el sedentarismo y la sobre alimentación. El sue o de nuestros ancestros de comida disponible con menor esfuerzo ha llegado a ser una pesadilla. Un gran número de factores hormonales producidos en diversos tejidos por más de 450 genes se encargan de mantener una homeostasis energética cuya alteración puede promover la obesidad; a su vez los adipocitos hipertróficos producen adipocinas que alteran el metabolismo de la glucosa, predisponiendo a diabetes mellitus y a la lesión del endotelio vascular generando enfermedad cardiovascular. La obesidad se constituye así en un estado proinflamatorio crónico de bajo grado. Las diferentes estrategias de tratamiento de esta enfermedad multifactorial implican una disminución en el aporte y un aumento del gasto energéticos. El tratamiento definitivo a muy largo plazo posiblemente resulte del desarrollo de la biología molecular, sin embargo en el momento actual ese horizonte está tan lejano que el conocimiento de las graves complicaciones de la obesidad, los esfuerzos educativos, los cambios en el medio ambiente y en el estilo de vida son críticos para enfrentar el desafío. Instrumentos científicos antiguos en el Instituto San Isidro. Recuperación y contextualización

Abstract: This paper presents the results of the labours undertaken in the Instituto San Isidro regarding the conservation, documentation and contextualization of the XIXth century scientific instruments that still belong to this institution. In order to achieve an historical understanding of the collection, the attention is focused on the political and educational decisions taken by the Spanish authorities in the period considered. Besides, particular attention is paid to technological pieces, which in general were used, as in other countries, to illustrate the “applied side” of physics. En el presente artículo se tratan las tareas de recuperación y documentación del material científico antiguo existente en el actual instituto San Isidro de Madrid tras el traslado en 1985 de una parte importante al Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. Para contextualizar dicha colección, destinada en su mayoría a la ense anza de la Física en el s. XIX, se estudia su creación y desarrollo, relacionándolos con la historia del centro, así como con los acontecimientos políticos y educativos que condicionaron sus características. Asimismo, se se ala la presencia en esta colección de instrumentos tecnológicos, tema insuficientemente tratado en los trabajos disponibles, vinculados a las ense anzas de Física. A la hora de describir las tareas destinadas a recuperar los instrumentos científicos mencionados se describe tanto la metodología seguida como los resultados, ejemplificados en la documentación de dos piezas representativas, una de Física y otra de carácter tecnológico.

Abstract: the malignant fibrohystiocytoma is the most frequent soft tissue sarcoma in the adult age, in an age group mayor of 50 years old, and affect principal to the man. these mesenquimal tumors with distinct morphological varieties need an immunohistochemistry analysis for his differential diagnostic, principal with the sarcomatoide carcinoma, the miofibroblastic inflammatory tumor and the leiomiosarcomas. macroscopically there are bulky neoplasm with multiples necrosis areas in the superficial incision, of the microscopically point of view, the tumor show a no order proliferation of the fusocellular cells, with a esteliform patron and or the presence of multinucleate cells with atypical mitosis and a stroma, with show a big quantities of collagen and a variety numbers of inflammatory cells mononucleotic and spumoni hystiocyts. the diagnostic is realized in base to his morphologic and the immunohistochemistry. we present the case of a male patient 54 years old and the form of his management.

Abstract: perfusion cultures usually reach high cell densities and, therefore, require a spinfilter for cellular retention. but spinfilters may clog prematurely so we decided to study the process by pumping a suspension culture through the filter, so that the cells are trapped inside and the clarified flow-through can be measured by collecting it in a measuring cylinder until partial or total obstruction of the filter, which in this case is used as a filtrating centrifuge. filtrate volume with time was measured at several cellular concentrations and rotational speeds, calculating the behavior of specific resistance for the apparent cake, the resistance of the filtration medium, cake porosity and hydrodynamic regime. the results were used to adjust the filtration profile.

Abstract: authors developed an analytical method to quantification of tannins in aqueous extract from bidens pilosa l. (romerillo) using visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometry, where samples are readed at 700 nm, and its absorbance is referred to tanic acid. calibration curve for rank of concentrations, included between 4 and 16 ppm, was linear both for reference chemicals (tanic acid) and for aqueous extract from bidens pilosa l. (romerillo), with correlation coeficients above 0,9900 in two cases; furthermore, statistical tests of interception and slope weren′t significant. precision given as repeatibility was satisfactory with a variation coefficient (vc) equal to 2,30 % for 12 assays, whereas repetibility fulfills the internationally stablished criteria since variation coeficient was of 2,94 %. recovery was superior to 99 % in studied concentration ranks and fulfils the "g" cochran′s and "t" student′s tests. method was selective, linear, precise, and accurate.

Abstract: Se desarrolló un método analítico para la cuantificación de taninos en el extracto acuoso de romerillo (EAR) y se utilizó la espectrofotometría ultravioleta-visible donde las muestras son leídas a 700 nm y su absorbancia referida a ácido tánico. La curva de calibración para el rango de concentraciones comprendidas entre 4 y 16 ppm fue lineal tanto para la sustancia química de referencia, ácido tánico, como para el EAR con coeficientes de correlación superiores a 0,9900 en ambos casos; además las pruebas estadísticas del intercepto y la pendiente resultaron ser no significativas. La precisión dada como repetibilidad fue satisfactoria con un coeficiente de variación (CV) igual a 2,30 % para 12 réplicas de ensayo, mientras la reproducibilidad cumplió con los criterios establecidos internacionalmente ya que el coeficiente de variación fue de 2,94 %. El recobrado resultó ser superior al 99 % en los rangos de concentración estudiados y cumple además las pruebas "G" de Cochran y "T" de Student.
