This work was conducted at the Department of Animal Science, Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras, Lavras, Minas Gerais, from July, 1980, to October, 1981. It was designed to compare the nutritive value index and the nitrogen balance of their hays at three different growth stages (60, 90 and 120 days). The nutritive value index and nitrogen balance was determined using 12 (twelve) sheep in metabolic cages. The experiment was divided into three parts. Each part was statistically analyzed on a 3 x 2 factorial scheme with two repetitions within a completely random experimental design. At the end, the collected data were statistically analyzed as a single experiment. Results permitted the following conclusion: the age more indicated for production of hay was between 60 to 90 days of growth in both species analyzed.

Abstract: The present study was carried out in the Department of Animal Science of the University of Lavras, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in a dusky red latosol. The experiment started on 11/15/1990 and was completed on 05/29/1991. Its objective was to evaluate the yield and content of crude protein of transvala grass (Digitaria decumbens Stent cv Transvala), swazi grass (Digitaria swazilandensis Stent) and coastcross (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. var. dactylon, Harlan, cv Coastal x Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. robustus, Calyton & Harlan) grass under four different levels of nitrogen (0, 100, 200 and 400 kg/ha) as ammonium sulphate. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with 6 replications. The treatments were distributed in split-split-plots design with the different grasses in main plots, nitrogen levels in split-plots and harvests in split-split-plots. Under those conditions the results showed that: 1) The application of nitrogen fertilizer increased the production of dry matter and crude protein; 2) Independently of the application of N, the coastcross grass was the one which presented the best performance in terms of yield and content crude protein of the grasses studied; 3) The swazi grass was slightly superior to the transavala grass in terms of yield and content crude protein. KEY-WORDS: Nitrogen; fertilization; crude protein; dry matter; protein yield.

Abstract: The present work evaluated the effects of the ap-plication of different amounts of liquid pig waste (LPw) in the manuring of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu in relation to the chemical manuring usually recommended, as the production and composition chemist - bromatológica during the period from January at April/00. The treatments consisted of T1 = it controls, T2 = chemical manuring (60 kg/ha of N in form of sulfate of ammonium, 30 kg/ha of P in form of simple superfosfato and 37,5 kg/ha of K in form of potassium chloride), T3 = 50 m3/ha, T4 = 100 m3/ha and T5 = 150 m3/ha, being the LPw,manurings divided in three applications. The used experimental deli-neament was it of blocks complete casualizados, with four repetitions. They were appraised: production of dry matter (PMS) (kg/ha), medium tenors of rude protein (PB), fiber in neutral detergent (NDF), fiber in acid detergent (ADF) and hemicelulose (HC), besides the medium tenors of the macrominerals: match (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). The manuring with dejections and the chemical manuring provided significant increments in PMS of the grass Marandu. The application of LPW influenced the composition bromatologyc of the forage, as well as the chemical composition. For the found results the application of 150 m3 of DLS can be recommended to substitute the recommended chemical manuring. KEY-WORDS: ADF, cruden protein, mineral macroelements, NDF, production of dry mater.
