Pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus infection and TNF, LTA, IL1B, IL6, IL8, and CCL polymorphisms in Mexican population: a case–control study

BMC Infectious Diseases , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2334-12-299
Abstract: Background Some patients have a greater response to viral infection than do others having a similar level of viral replication. Hypercytokinemia is the principal immunopathological mechanism that contributes to a severer clinical course in cases of influenza A/H1N1. The benefit produced, or damage caused, by these cytokines in severe disease is not known. The genes that code for these molecules are polymorphic and certain alleles have been associated with susceptibility to various diseases. The objective of the present study was to determine whether there was an association between polymorphisms of TNF, LTA, IL1B, IL6, IL8, and CCL1 and the infection and severity of the illness caused by the pandemic A/H1N1 in Mexico in 2009. Methods Case–control study. The cases were patients confirmed with real time PCR with infection by the A/H1N1 pandemic virus. The controls were patients with infection like to influenza and non-familial healthy contacts of the patients with influenza. Medical history and outcome of the disease was registered. The DNA samples were genotyped for polymorphisms TNF rs361525, rs1800629, and rs1800750; LTA rs909253; IL1B rs16944; IL6 rs1818879; IL8 rs4073; and CCL1 rs2282691. Odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated. The logistic regression model was adjusted by age and severity of the illness in cases. Results Infection with the pandemic A/H1N1 virus was associated with the following genotypes: TNF rs361525 AA, OR = 27.00; 95% CI = 3.07–1248.77); LTA rs909253 AG (OR = 4.33, 95% CI = 1.82–10.32); TNF rs1800750 AA (OR = 4.33, 95% CI = 1.48–12.64); additionally, LTA rs909253 AG showed a limited statistically significant association with mortality (p = 0.06, OR = 3.13). Carriers of the TNF rs1800629 GA genotype were associated with high levels of blood urea nitrogen (p = 0.05); those of the TNF rs1800750 AA genotype, with high levels of creatine phosphokinase (p=0.05). The IL1B rs16944 AA genotype was associated with an elevated number of leukocytes (p <0.001) and the IL8 rs4073 AA genotype, with a higher value for PaO2 mm Hg. Conclusion The polymorphisms of genes involved in the inflammatory process contributed to the severity of the clinical behavior of infection by the pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus.

Abstract: this paper is part of a wider research aimed to study the way in which medical care and the use of procedures to prevent hiv perinatal transmission shapes the experience of living with this sickness and the meanings given to motherhood and hiv by women suffering from this condition. i explore the role played by medical knowledge and the conditions of medical attention in the production of meanings about the body in hiv infected women. considering the specificity of human body - both subject and object-, the ethnographic approach and narrative analysis allow us to go beyond the limits of an exclusively representational point of view. thus, i analyze the accounts of four women living with hiv framed in a hospital ethnography in a obstetrical centre in southern buenos aires city.
Ecology, Religious Practices and Identities Related to Water

Revista de Dialectología y Tradiciones Populares , 2009,
Abstract: Conflicts arising around the management of water are frequently resolved through a continuous process of symbolic or material appropriation of those places where the control, distribution and selection of water poses problems. The case of hermitages devoted to the Virgin Mary which serve as a crucial axis for the symbolic resolution of earthly conflicts, as is the case of those related to the administrative borders between neighbouring villages, is a constant. The link between the cult of the Virgin Mary and water shows the existence of more or less explicit interests of a part of the population in using symbolic control to achieve real and material domination through the construction of identity models, both locally and on a wider scale. A certain kind of knowledge is used to generate a social practice which, in turn, is transformed into ideology. Beliefs are thus linked to both economic and ecological factors, as well as to other referents of social organization. The religious practices associated with miraculous springs promote a certain way of thinking: springs, rivers and wells are not exclusively natural objects, rather they are fundamental mental maps of the social and environmental context.

Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice: Ecological Risk/Resilience Model Contributions to Special Education  [PDF]
Guadalupe Acle-Tomasini, Laura María Martínez-Basurto, Rosalinda Lozada-García
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.77114
Abstract: The purpose of educational resilience is to understand why some students from adverse environmental backgrounds and communities succeed while others from equally adverse conditions do not. Resilience must not be regarded as an exclusive attribute of students but as the intertwined relationship between children’s abilities and the abilities of individuals within their family, school and social contexts. This proposal of an ecological risk/resilience model in special education is derived from the resilience perspective and is based on Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological model of development, and contributions in the study of resilience (Rutter, 1993). This proposed model lays the foundation for specific assessment/intervention program development focused on altering the way special education students interact with different people and within different contexts, in order to promote resilient behaviors in the actors involved in their academic achievement and adaptation, and educational inclusion. A special emphasis is made on early intervention, when children start schooling and may face academic risks due to their special educational needs. The basis for this model, the dynamics of implementation and the main results are described.
Transforming Outstanding Potential in Outstanding Skills by Using Storytelling to Develop Intellectual Abilities of Gifted Students at Risk  [PDF]

Creative Education (CE) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2018.97085
Abstract: Gifted children living in vulnerable environments could be at social and educative risk when they do not receive an appropriate instruction with respect to their outstanding potential, particularly in the early years of schooling. The current work considers this rationale to generate an early identification process and implementation of a program that could meet the specific requirements of children who can be targeted with outstanding potential. The purpose of this study was to transform outstanding potential to outstanding intellectual skills of targeted children using an emotional, cognitive and creative enrichment program designed for them based on storytelling activities. In this descriptive non-experimental mixed method design, 7 first and second graders students participate, 4 girls and 3 boys (M-age = 6.28). The study was organized in three steps: 1) characterization or the risk/resilience profile of children, using an exploratory and diagnostic assessment; 2) the design and implementation of a cognitive and creative enrichment program based on storytelling activities; and 3) the assessment of changes in intellectual abilities. Results were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The intellectual area showed statistically significant differences in scores for Total IQ, Verbal Comprehension Index and Working Memory Index of children from the initial assessment to the final one, indicating that their capacity to comprehend the active process of the interrelations within and beyond a text as well as to construct a mental representation of its context increased significantly after the program and this constituted an evidence of their intellectual abilities.
García de León P., Guadalupe;
Estudios fronterizos , 2009,
Abstract: this article presents a summary of the corporate strategies of the levi strauss & co. firm, a company that has had an important role in each one of the phases of mexico's process of integration into the global apparel production: the integration under the shared-production programs, the first stage of nafta, and the current stage of decline of mexican exports and re-positioning of china. the central argument is that, by analyzing the competitive strategies of the leading firms of global apparel networks - as in the case of levi's -, we can get closer to the restructuring logic of these networks and understand the changing terms of the international insertion of the countries and firms involved, as in the case of mexico.

(The aim of this article is to show and compare the different stages results of a didactic experience through which we tried to contribute to reformulations skill development of preuniversity students. This experience was performed in a preuniversity reading and writing course given in Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento. We specially studied the difficulties students had when they did the first course task that requires reformulation abilities: replace a statement by a similar one. This experience will go some way towards unraveling problems detected in said reformulations, and suggests important implications for a future research.)
