Abstract:

Objectives: 1) To identify the hydrogeological characteristics and fluoride (F-) concentration in drinking water in the southeast of the state of Morelos, Mexico, and 2) to estimate the association between the prevalence and severity of fluorosis, dental caries, and water F- concentration. Methods: A hydrogeological model was developed to determine the vertical distribution of lithostratigraphic units, rocks’ hydraulic conductivities, and groundwater flow characteristics. A total of 649 schoolchildren from two communities received oral examinations. One community was located in an area with 0.75 mg F-/L in the water supply and the other in an area with 1.6 mg F-/L. Fluorosis was assessed using the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TFI) and the dental caries were assessed with the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index. The region groundwater was extracted from an inter-granular aquifer consisting of volcano clasts of intermediate volcanic chemical composition. Results: Oral examinations showed that 32.35% of the children had severe forms of fluorosis (TFI ≥ 4) in the community with 1.60 mg F-/L and 7.8% in the 0.75 mg F-/L community (p < 0.0001).

Uso de Psicofármacos en prisión (CP Madrid III) The use of psychotropic drugs in prison (CP Madrid III)

The use of psychotropic drugs in primary care has exponentially increased and prisons are no exception. These drugs are often prescribed in order to find therapeutic uses in the fields of personality disorders, addictions, and dysfunctional behaviours that have not been accepted as indications (compassive use). This study enabled us to make a detailed description of the use of psychiatric drugs at the Madrid III prison, a centre with one of the lowest levels of pharmaceutical expenditure in the region. For a two-week period, all prescriptions of psychotropic drugs were collected and registered along with data of several possible conditioning factors. 20.5% of the population was receiving some kind of psychiatric drug; 76% of those inmates undergoing treatment were receiving o

Abstract: the use of psychotropic drugs in primary care has exponentially increased and prisons are no exception. these drugs are often prescribed in order to find therapeutic uses in the fields of personality disorders, addictions, and dysfunctional behaviours that have not been accepted as indications (compassive use). this study enabled us to make a detailed description of the use of psychiatric drugs at the madrid iii prison, a centre with one of the lowest levels of pharmaceutical expenditure in the region. for a two-week period, all prescriptions of psychotropic drugs were collected and registered along with data of several possible conditioning factors. 20.5% of the population was receiving some kind of psychiatric drug; 76% of those inmates undergoing treatment were receiving one or two psychotropic drugs; 65% were taking sedatives, 38% antidepressants and 27% antipsychotic medication. the total amount of psychotropics consumed was 9,840 ddds, 46% of which were sedatives, 17% of those being antidepressants and the other 14% antipsychotics. the total cost of the fortnight’s treatment was 5,379 euros, 72% of which was spent on antipsychotic medication. there are signs that compassive use of the latest generation of antipsychotics and antiepileptics, and the newer antidepressants are a main cause of the dramatic increase in cost, and cost efficiency has not always been clearly demonstrated. one of the key influencing factors on amount, type and cost of treatment was the prescriptor. an unexpected result was that of finding no relationship between age, nationality, grade or other individual variables and prescription of different kind of medication, with the exception of benzodiazepines.
Bacterial pathogens associated with bloody diarrhea in Uruguayan children

Abstract: diarrheal disease continues to be a serious health problem, especially in developing countries. bloody diarrhea represents approximately 20-30% of all cases and has higher morbidity and mortality. treatment with antibiotics is beneficial in cases of shigella, campylobacter, yersinia and salmonella infection, principally in those children with a higher risk of invasive disease. the aims of this study were to detect the bacterial agents associated with bloody diarrhea in children and to determine their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. between june 2001 and january 2008, 249 children with bloody diarrhea were studied. shigella and shiga toxin-producing escherichia coli (stec) were recovered from 48 (19.3%) and 3 (1.2%) of the total of cases, respectively. in 49 out of 249 children, in whom other enteropathogens were investigated, we recovered campylobacter jejuni from 7 children (14.3%), salmonella spp. from 2 (4.1%) and aeromonas spp. from 1 (2%) in addition to shigella from 7 children (14.3%). thirty-four (70%) shigella isolates showed resistance to ampicillin and 13 (27%) to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. all shigella isolates were susceptible to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. salmonella and stec isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics assayed. thus, the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or ampicillin would not be appropriate for the empirical treatment of shigella - associated diarrhea.
Satellites around massive galaxies since z~2

Abstract: Accretion of minor satellites has been postulated as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of the massive galaxies over cosmic time. Using a sample of 629 massive (Mstar~10^11 Msun) galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we explore which fraction of these objects has satellites with 0.01 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:100) up to z=1 and which fraction has satellites with 0.1 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:10) up to z=2 within a projected radial distance of 100 kpc. We find that the fraction of massive galaxies with satellites, after the background correction, remains basically constant and close to ~30% for satellites with a mass ratio down to 1:100 up to z=1, and ~15% for satellites with a 1:10 mass ratio up to z=2. The family of spheroid-like massive galaxies presents a 2-3 times larger fraction of objects with satellites than the group of disk-like massive galaxies. A crude estimation of the number of 1:3 mergers a massive spheroid-like galaxy experiences since z~2 is around 2. For a disk-like galaxy this number decreases to ~1.
González Varela, José Edgar;
Diánoia , 2008,
Abstract: there are five platonic arguments for the existence of ideas in aristotle's treatise on ideas according to metaphysics a 9 two of these arguments are "more accurate" than the others. the standard interpretation of this distinction claims that the "more accurate" arguments are valid to conclude the existence of ideas while the "less accurate" ones are not. in this paper i call into question this interpretation, for i offer a new interpretation of one of the "less accurate" arguments, the object of thought argument, according to which this is valid to conclude the existence of ideas.
González Varela, José Edgar;
Signos filosóficos , 2010,
Abstract: in this paper i examine quine's sceptical treatment of propositional (de dicto) and non-propositional (de re) necessity through his theory of three grades of modal involvement. i argue that, although it has various valuable features, it suffers from some serious limitations that make it unsatisfactory; specifically, (i) it cannot offer a suitable basis for a non-eliminativist account of propositional necessity, given the very marginal role he assigns to this notion in our theoretical and practical lives, and (ii) it cannot provide an explanation of a posteriori necessity. in view of this i try to motivate a modal non-cognitivist account (an anti-realist account that aims to provide an explanation of our modalizing based only on modest and mundane resources) as, potentially, the best response to quine's sceptical treatment, this for two reasons: because it respects important quinean concerns and desiderata and it can remediate the limitations that affect quine's account of necessity.
González Varela,José Edgar;
Revista latinoamericana de filosof?-a , 2010,
Abstract: in metaphysics a.9 aristotle classifies as "less accurate" three of the platonic arguments for ideas surveyed in his treatise on ideas (peri ideōn). the standard interpretation of the peri ideōn claims that these arguments are less accurate because they are only valid to postulate aristotelian universals, but not to postulate ideas. in this paper i intend to call into question this interpretation with respect to one of these arguments: the one over many argument. i claim that this argument, although not valid to postulate ideas, it is not valid either to postulate aristotelian universals. this argument is valid only for a conclusion that is neutral between platonism and aristotelianism about universals: that there are other entities apart from the particulars.
In Metaphysics A.9 Aristotle classifies as "less accurate" three of the platonic arguments for Ideas surveyed in his treatise On Ideas (Peri ideōn).
