Resíduos sólidos urbanos: impactos socioambientais e perspectiva de manejo sustentável com inclus?o social
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232012000600014
Abstract: strategies to reconcile development with the protection of ecosystems will yet again be discussed at the forthcoming rio +20 summit. the management of solid urban waste is an issue which has barely been touched upon in such discussions. given the institutionalization of the national solid waste policy, this paper seeks to contribute to this debate and to single out alternatives to tackle this issue with an emphasis on social inclusion. for this purpose, specialized scientific literature was consulted as well as information on solid waste management. it is clearly seen that inadequate management of solid waste has immediate impacts on the environment and health, and contributes to climate change. considering the limitations of the current options for waste disposal, it is essential to minimize the quantities produced by reducing, reusing and recycling. in this context, the role of independent waste gatherers who have been conducting work of great environmental importance is highlighted. given the vulnerabilities of this population, it is necessary to devise public policies to ensure that waste gathering is a more respected and less risky activity that guarantees an income, so as to move towards more healthy, equitable and sustainable development.
Saúde e meio ambiente nas cidades: os desafios da saúde ambiental
Gouveia, Nelson;
Saúde e Sociedade , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-12901999000100005
Abstract: in a matter of few years there will be more urban than rural dwellers worldwide. the rapid urbanisation lacking adequate control and regulatory mechanisms typical of developing countries, brought along huge effects to the health of the population environmental problems traditionally related to poverty and underdevelopment such as insufficient provision of sanitation services, waste collection and disposal, and precarious housing conditions, are now added to environmental problems considered of "modern life" such as the chemical and physical pollution of the air, water and soil. once again, the poor population is affected by a disproportionate share of the bad effects of urbanisation thus, environmental and health inequalities and inequities become enormous. in order to change this picture, environmental issues need to be re-incorporated into the health policy agenda and the objectives of environmental health should be integrated into a sustainable development approach. intersectoral dialogue between partners will also bring benefits in the achievement of a better quality of life for the population. today, environmental health faces the challenge of promoting better quality of health and life in the cities and the opportunity of confronting the absurd picture of social exclusion under the perspective of equity.
Theory and Practice of Literary Historiography in Brazil, 1950s : A Look into the Corporate Logic of a Modernist Institution
Gouveia, Saulo
Ellipsis , 2009,
Abstract: My essay analyses the bulk of literary historiography that first appeared in Brazil during the 1950s. I examine issues related to canon formation primarily in literary historiography that was established at that time. The essay is divided in three sections: The first attempts to define and situate the field of literary historiography within the field of cultural production. The second section contains an inventory of the 1950s publications with brief analysis of contents as well as biographical information about the authors. The third section analyzes the discourse and the ideology of literary historiography with regard to the Modernist movement. Some questions that I address are: What are the theoretical and methodological approaches that inform literary historiography in Brazil? Who are the main authors and ideologues in this field? What is the relationship between theory and the ideology expressed in the discourse of literary histories?
Errancia e idiorritmia: um método
Santos, Juliano Gouveia dos;
ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-53202011000100002
Abstract: the text approaches the terms of the practical research in photography "errancy and idiorhythm - photographs" to try to apprehend a methodological proposal of them. especially in dialogue with l'espace littéraire, of the french essayist maurice blanchot, the "errancy" is discussed as the axis of a practice that ignores your destination and do not abdicate its irreducible (though sometimes unknown) driving force. the "idiorhythm", a term employed by roland barthes in the seminar comment vivre ensemble, serves as a basis for a discussion on the individuation of language. the paper seeks to unite these considerations in a possible essayistic method of production.

Aplica??o de regress?o baseada no uso do solo para predizer a concentra??o de material particulado inalável no município de S?o Paulo, Brasil
Habermann, Mateus;Gouveia, Nelson;
Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522012000200004
Abstract: the study intended to develop a land use regression model to predict inhalable particulate matter (pm10) concentrations in s?o paulo, brazil. the model was based on the 2007 average of pm10 available from 9 monitoring stations and demographic, roads and land use data in buffers of 250 to 1,000 m. simple linear regression were used to select the more robust independent variables and those without collinearity. four variables were selected for the multiple regression analysis. only light traffic in buffers <250 m remained in the final model which explained 63.8% of the pm10variance.the land use regression approach is a quick and easy method to predict air pollution levels. however, our model was based on measurements of only a few sites.
Avalia??o da política educacional municipal: em busca de indicadores de efetividade nos ambitos do acesso, gest?o e financiamento
Gouveia, Andréa Barbosa;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362009000300004
Abstract: this article discusses pointers to evaluate the municipal educational policy built up by parties with antagonistic profiles in the brazilian scenario, prioritizing measurable dimensions in the areas of access, management and financing of education which are able to demonstrate objective effectiveness of the educational policy in a cycle of management, (figueiredo, a. m. c.; figueiredo, m. f., 1986). the discussion is part of a documentary research of indirect national sources and direct sources of two municipal administrations. the survey refers to the 2001-2004 management cycle, the field research was carried out between 2005 and 2007. the proposed indicators are applied in a pt's administration in londrina and pfl's in curitiba. the results of the research seemed to confirm these pointers' potential to distinguish the effects of the options of each administration in terms of care, democratization of relationships in the educational system and in school and in the increase of the annual investment.
Sexualidades interditadas: loucura e gênero masculino
Engel, Magali Gouveia;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702008000500009
Abstract: the article identifies and studies male sexuality and affectivity as forbidden and imprisoned in brazilian asylums in the first decades of the republic. by analyzing psychiatric records from that era, it explores the notion that sexual and affective behavior had little to do with the construction of male profiles deemed 'deviant' and/or 'pathological'. this reflection shifts the focus of analysis to the gender specificities that determine the various traits displayed in 'mental disturbances' attributed to certain sexual and affective behavior.

Engel, Magali Gouveia;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701999000100001
Abstract: the article examines some of the main aspects governing psychiatry?s role in the brazilian political and social context at the close of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth. it analyzes certain themes -civilization, race, labor, fanaticisim, political dissent, sexuality - that were emphasized by specialists in their construction of a very broad notion of ?mental illness?. through the analysis of texts produced by psychiatrists and legal experts (including dissertations written at the faculdade de medicina do rio de janeiro, reports from the servi?o de assistência a alienados, and works and articles by specialists), the relation between the psychiatric definition of the frontiers of ?abnormality? and efforts to implement new strategies of social control is discussed.
A natureza motivacional dos valores humanos: evidências acerca de uma nova tipologia
Gouveia, Valdiney V.;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2003000300010
Abstract: this article presents a new typology of basic values, based on human needs. such values were theorized to represent three criteria of orientation, each one divided in two psychosocial functions: personal (experiential and promotion), central (preservation and supra-personal), and social (interactional and normative). data were obtained from two diverse samples (n = 606). this typology was tested regarding to: (1) internal structure - a multidimensional scaling (mds) permitted viewing these three criteria of orientation, and a confirmatory factor analysis proved their corresponding psychosocial functions; (2) convergence to schwartz' theory - a mds showed that the six psychosocial functions and the ten motivational types of values appeared in different spatial regions, but they were interpreted in the same terms; and (3) prediction of religiosity degree - consistently, this variable was positively and negatively correlated with normative and experiential values, respectively. in brief, this typology was not incompatible with schwartz' theory, and supports the motivational nature of human values. however, it is more parsimonious, assuming a reduced set of basic values.
