Alonso, Diego Fernández;Azzopardi, Barry J.;Gonalves, José Antnio Silveira;Coury, José Renato;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-73862001000400008
Abstract: venturi scrubbers are high efficiency gas cleaners in which suspended particles are removed from gas streams by droplets formed by liquid atomisation, usually in the venturi throat. the size of the droplets formed is of fundamental importance to the performance of the equipment, both in terms of pressure drop and collection efficiency. in this study, drop sizes in a cylindrical laboratory scale venturi scrubber were measured using a laser diffraction technique. gas velocity and liquid to gas ratios varied from 50 to 90 m/s and 0.5 to 2.0 l/m3, respectively. water was inserted as perpendicular jets at the beginning of the throat. measurements were performed at three positions: two located along the throat, and the last one at the end of the diffuser. the data presented here are a typical example of pneumatic atomisation and can be relevant to other industrial applications such as combustion and engine technology. finally, results are compared to available correlations and the validity of these equations is discussed.

Revista Brasileira de Educa??o Médica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-55022011000100002
Abstract: recent decades have witnessed an increase in the societal implications of medical error, a subject in which medicine and law intertwine. this study focused on medical error from the perspective of medical students and law students, assessing their level of interest and information and the need to discuss the topic during undergraduate education and how it occurs in each field, in their view. a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted at the federal university in juiz de fora, minas gerais state, in 2008 with 185 medical students and 119 law students. 88.7% of the medical students and 92.4% of the law students reported knowledge of medical error. the interest was due to the fact that medical error is currently a widely discussed issue. the students thought the issue should be addressed in their undergraduate education (97.8% of medical students and 94.9% of law students). it is important to discuss such a current issue in undergraduate education in both medicine and law, because of the potential for decreasing the vicious circle of errors, iatrogenesis, and law suits, in addition to fostering reflection on the role of medical education in the ethical training of young professionals.
Rotational Oscillation Effect on Flow Characteristics of a Circular Cylinder at Low Reynolds Number  [PDF]

World Journal of Mechanics (WJM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/wjm.2015.510019
Abstract: Two dimensional numerical simulations of flow around a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder were performed at Re = 1000. A wide range of forcing frequencies, fr, and three values of oscillation amplitudes, A, are considered. Different vortex shedding modes are observed for a fixed A at several values of fr, as well as for a fixed fr at different values of A. The 2C mode of vortex shedding was obtained in the present study. It is important to point out that this mode has not been observed by other investigators for rotationally oscillating case. Also, it is verified that this mechanism has great influence on the drag coefficient for high frequency values. Furthermore, the lift and pressure coefficients and the power spectra density are also analyzed.
Dieselization and Road Transport CO2 Emissions: Evidence from Europe  [PDF]
António Cardoso Marques, Bruno Miguel Gonalves, José Alberto Fuinhas
Low Carbon Economy (LCE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/lce.2012.33008
Abstract: Road transport carbon dioxide emissions were analyzed, by focusing on a panel of 14 European countries for the time span 1995-2007. We deal with the existence of contemporaneous correlation by using the Panel Corrected Standard Errors estimator. We extend the empirical literature by controlling the effect of new diesel passenger car registrations and the average power of those vehicles. The price of gasoline and income reduce road transport carbon dioxide emissions, while population density and average power of new diesel passenger cars raises those emissions. We deepen the debate about dieselization, concluding that saving emissions by using diesel tend to be surpassed by the increased kilometers driven.
Positive Topological Entropy for Magnetic Flows on Surfaces
José Antnio Gonalves Miranda
Mathematics , 2006, DOI: 10.1088/0951-7715/20/8/011
Abstract: We study the topological entropy of the magnetic flow on a closed riemannian surface. We prove that if the magnetic flow has a non-hyperbolic closed orbit in some energy set T^cM= E^{-1}(c), then there exists an exact $ C^\infty$-perturbation of the 2-form $ \Omega $ such that the new magnetic flow has positive topological entropy in T^cM. We also prove that if the magnetic flow has an infinite number of closed orbits in T^cM, then there exists an exact C^1-perturbation of $ \Omega $ with positive topological entropy in T^cM. The proof of the last result is based on an analog of Franks' lemma for magnetic flows on surfaces, that is proven in this work, and Ma\~n\'e's techniques on dominated splitting. As a consequence of those results, an exact magnetic flow on S^2 in high energy levels admits a C^1-perturbation with positive topological entropy. In the appendices we show that an exact magnetic flow on the torus in high energy levels admits a $ C^\infty $-perturbation with positive topological entropy.
Multihomogeneous Normed Algebras and Polynomial Identities
Leandro Cioletti,José Antnio Freitas,Dimas José Gonalves
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: In this paper we consider PI-algebras $A$ over $\R$ or $\C$. It is well known that in general such algebras are not normed algebras. In fact, there is a nilpontent commutative algebra which is not a normed algebra, see [1]. Here we address the question of whether it is possible to find a normed PI-algebra $B$ with the same polynomial identities as $A$, and moreover, whether there is some Banach PI-algebra with this property. Our main theorem provides an affirmative answer for this question and moreover we also show the existence of a Banach Algebra with the same polynomial identities as $A$. As a byproduct we prove that if $A$ is a normed PI-algebra and its completion is nil, then $A$ is nilpotent. By introducing the concept of multihomogeneous norm we obtain as an application of our main results that if $\FX$ is multihomogeneus normed algebra and $A$ is a PI-algebra such that the completion of the quotient space $\FX/Id(A)$ is nil, then $A$ is nilpotent. Both applications are extensions of the study initiated in [4].
