Abstract: bronchiectasis is a disease which is rarely found in developed countries and has a high incidence in developing countries. in brazil, the most frequent causes are viral or bacterial respiratory infections in childhood, and tuberculosis. antibiotic therapy considerably reduces morbidity. however, in patients with persistent symptoms, surgical resection offers greater chances of cure or better quality of life. objectives: prospectively evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients with bronchiectasis as well as the results of surgical treatment in patients from two public hospitals in fortaleza (ce), northeastern brazil. patients and method: sixty-seven patients with bronchiectasis submitted to surgery between august 1989 and march 1999 were evaluated, as well as demographic data, etiology of the disease, complications, and therapeutic success rate. results: mean age of patients (39 females e 28 males) was 32.5 ± 14.1 years. the most frequent causes of bronchiectasis were viral or bacterial infection (44.8%) and tuberculosis (31.3%). the disease was localized in 46 patients and multisegmental in 21. in six patients it was bilateral. no surgical death occurred and postoperative complications were more frequent in patients with multisegmental bronchiectasis (9/21 versus 6/46, p = 0.011). from the 62 patients who were followed up, 49 were cured, 10 showed improvement, and 3 did not obtain any benefit. results were excellent in 39 patients with localized bronchiectasis and in 10 patients with the multisegmental form of the disease (p < 0.001). conclusion: results show two distinct groups of patients: those with bronchiectasis, who presented fewer surgical complications and better postoperative results, and those with multisegmental bronchiectasis.

Abstract: bullous keratopathy is characterized by corneal stromal edema with epithelial or subepithelial bullae due to cell loss and endothelial decompensation. in more advanced cases, subepithelial fibrosis, formation of a posterior collagenous layer or retrocorneal fibrous membrane, and corneal vascularization can occur. decreased vision is present because the loss of corneal transparency with symptoms like tearing and pain caused by epithelial bullae that can rupture. currently, bullous keratopathy is the most common indication for penetrating keratoplasty and regraft. the main etiology is the endothelial cell loss after ophthalmic surgeries as cataract surgery. cataract affects approximately 20 million people worldwide, and this complication can occur in 1 to 2% of cataract surgeries. this study revised bullous keratopathy etiopathogenesis, clinical and surgical treatment available for this corneal disease.
Parametros morfológicos na avalia??o de qualidade de mudas de Eucalyptus grandis
Gomes, José Mauro;Couto, Laércio;Leite, Helio Garcia;Xavier, Aloísio;Garcia, Silvana Lages Ribeiro;
Revista árvore , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622002000600002
Abstract: an experiment was carried out to study the morphological parameters used to evaluate the quality of eucalyptus grandis seedlings producedin different tube sizes. a mixture of 80% organic compound (co) and 20% charcoal powder fertilized with and without n, p and k was used as substrate. four sizes of hard plastic tubes at the volumes of 50, 110, 200 and 280 cm3 were used as packaging. height and height/weight relationship of the aerial part dry matter should be considered, since although providing a satisfactory contribution to seedling quality pattern, the parameters did not present a destructive process. the use of height only to estimate the quality of eucalyptus grandis seedlings in the 110 cm3 volume tube when they were 90-day old should be used, since it presents a satisfactory relative contribution, besides being a nondestructive, easily determined and measured parameter.

Revista árvore , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622003000200001
Abstract: an experiment was carried out to study the growth of eucalyptus grandis seedlings produced in different sized tubes and n-p-k fertilization. a mixture of 80% organic compound (co) and 20% charcoal powder fertilized with and without n, p and k was used as substrate. four sizes of hard plastic tubes at the volumes of 50, 110, 200 and 280 cm3 were used as containers. the tube volumes must be considered for producing eucalyptus grandis seedlings. although the highest growths occurred in the larger tubes, these tubes should not be used because the seedling heights far surpass the ones considered as technically optimum for planting, and have a higher production cost. at 60 days of age, the seedlings are still small and quite tender, and do not present the hardness appropriate to field planting. at 120 days after sowing, the restriction to root growth and seedling height is affected even in the larger tubes, thus this is not the indicated age. the 110 cm3 volume tube must be considered for 90-day old seedlings.

Revista árvore , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622008000600008
Abstract: this work aimed to evaluate, by means of morphological characteristics, the effect of macronutrient doses on the growth of angico vermelho (anadenanthera macrocarpa (benth.) brenan) seedlings cultivated in three soils (red yellow argisol, red yellow dystrophic latosol and red yellow alic latosol). the seedling were sown in vases with capacity of 2.1 dm3 . the experiment was carried out from december 2004 to june 2005. the treatments were delimited according to a baconian matrix, with macronutrients varying in three different doses, plus two additional treatments (zero and base), with four repetitions. the sources of n, k and s were applied in four times (0-30-60-90 days). in general, the highest plant growth occurred in the red yellow alic latosol soil. the nutrient presenting the most significant effects was p, with doses of 150- 250 mg dm-3 being recommended. for n, minimum doses of 50 mg/dm3 are recommended. the nutrient s must be applied between 20 and 80 mg dm-3. the responses to the other nutrients (ca, mg and k), in many cases did not occur, suggesting that the species has low requirement for them. however, based on this work, further studies are suggested on the nutrients k and ca, for production of seedlings of the studied species in these soils.

Revista árvore , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622012000200003
Abstract: the objective of this work was to check the content and amount of n, p, k, ca and mg, and determine the critical level of these nutrients in soil and in the plant. the seedlings were grown from december 2004 to may 2005 in 2.1 dm-3 pots with soil samples from three classes: red-yellow alfisol (ava), alic red-yellow oxisol (lva) and red-yellow dystrophic oxisol (lvd). the treatments were delimited according to a baconian matrix where macronutrients were varied in three doses, and two additional treatments (zero and control), with four replications. it was found that overall, the seedlings of the species absorb higher amount of n, p, k, ca and mg as the soil availability increased. this was reflected in a higher concentration of nutrients applied in all parts of the plant. however, in some cases, there was no corresponding growth in response to this increase. the nutrients that produced more effects were p, n and s; few responses were observed in the other nutrients (ca, mg and k). the species has low nutrient requirements, and the critical level of nutrients in the soil and plant were smaller than those observed for other forest species, except for k and ca, which is suggested for studies with doses within the ranges of values found for better definition of them.
