Abstract: A range of factors associated with nutrition, genotype, environment and the stage of maturity have an effect on the relationship between nutrient intake, chemical and both chemical and physical body composition at a practical level. These factors constitute the bases to manipulate meat quality and its efficiency of production in a specific scenario. The objective of this research was to describe the composition of a pig genotype and the allometric relationships among the different components taking into account the carcass protein level in the empty body weight, in a specific context of commercial production. We used 39 barrows of the cross breed Duroc-Landrace x Yorkshire, from birth to 273 days of age, who were managed on conventional condition. After 70 days the animals were moved to 2600 msnm (14 oC). Four barrows were sacrificed at days 1, 21, 63, 99, 126, 154, 175, 210, 239 and 273 of age. Water, protein, lipids and ash were estimated in the canal, red and white entrails using proximal analysis. Animals were feed with a commercial diet whose composition was determined. Six equations were used to estimate allometric relationships between chemical components and protein content. We found that protein, lipids and water content increased linearly and quadratic while ash content increased linearly in both canal and empty body. The proportions of chemical components in the canal and the empty body showed different behavior along the commercial growth cycle. The relationships lipid:protein, water:protein and ash: protein were 2.14, 3.22 and 0.16 respectively. Increased and linearized allometric equations showed the best prediction of the data. They showed allometric coefficients of 0.86 for the relationship water: protein, 1.45 for lipids: protein and 0.81 for ash:protein. Las relaciones entre la ingesti 3n de nutrientes y la composici 3n qu -mica y f -sica corporal son afectadas a nivel pr ctico por un rango de factores asociados con la nutrici 3n, el genotipo, el ambiente y el estado de madurez, y constituyen la base para manipular la calidad de la carne y la eficiencia en un contexto espec -fico de producci 3n. Abstract: this paper describes the changes in anatomic components such as carcass, viscera and organs in commercial genotype barrows from birth to 273 days old. the relationships between them were quantified by using allometric equations. to analyze the changes in anatomic components, 39 terminal cross barrows (four per age) were slaughtered. the barrows were 1, 21, 63, 99, 126, 154, 175, 210, 239 and 273 days old. descriptive statistics were used and six allometric equations were evaluated. empty body weight, carcass weight, total viscera mass and total red and white viscera mass showed a quadratic linear trend in relation to live weight. carcass weight trend was linear (p< 0.0001) with regard to empty body weight. evaluated organs increased their weight in a linear, quadratic and cubic way except for the spleen, whose trend was linear (p<0.001). the same ratios (linear-quadratic) were observed in red, white and total viscera weight (p<0.01). the equations that best described the relationship between body weight and the different body components and organs were the increased allometric and the linearized allometric equations. the intercept values obtained for the evaluated equations were different from the ones reported in the literature, probably due to the high selection pressure imposed on swine genotypes used for pork production. this selection pressure may imply physiological and anatomical changes.

Abstract: El propósito de este trabajo fue describir los cambios en los componentes anatómicos: canal, vísceras y órganos en cerdos machos castrados de un genotipo comercial, desde el nacimiento hasta los 273 días de edad y cuantificar las relaciones entre cada uno de ellos, mediante el uso de ecuaciones alométricas. Para el análisis de los cambios en los componentes anatómicos se sacrificaron 39 cerdos machos castrados (cuatro por edad) de un cruce terminal, a 10 edades (1, 21, 63, 99, 126, 154, 175, 210, 239 y 273 días de edad), se aplicó estadística descriptiva y se evaluaron seis ecuaciones alométricas. El peso corporal vacío, el peso de la canal, la masa de vísceras total y la masa de vísceras rojas y blancas mostraron una tendencia lineal cuadrática con respecto al peso vivo, mientras que la tendencia del peso de la canal fue solamente lineal (p<0.01) con respecto al peso corporal vacío. Todos los órganos evaluados incrementaron su peso de manera lineal, cuadrática y cúbica, con excepción del bazo, cuya tendencia fue solamente lineal (p<0.01). Las mismas relaciones (lineal - cuadrática) fueron observadas para el peso de la vísceras rojas, blancas y el total de vísceras (p<0.01). Se encontró que las ecuaciones que mejor describieron las relaciones entre el peso corporal y los diferentes componentes corporales y órganos fueron la alométrica aumentada y la alométrica linealizada. Los valores de los interceptos obtenidos para las ecuaciones evaluadas, difieren de los reportados en la literatura, debido probablemente a la alta presión de selección a la que se someten los genotipos para producción intensiva, la cual puede conducir a cambios fisiológicos que se expresan a diferentes niveles anatómicos. Foi realizada a estatística descritiva e foram avaliadas seis equa es alométricas. Abstract: in this study, the gompertz model is used to describe the changes in chemical components (protein, lipids, ash and water) in growing pigs, as body weigh increases. growth and changes in deposition of several molecules was evaluated at 10 different ages (1, 21, 63, 99,126,154,175, 210, 239 and 273 days of age) in 39 pigs. carcass samples, red and white viscera were collected and submitted for chemical analysis. our study demonstrated that the model parameters have significance and biological sensitivity, which can be interpreted through maturity at 50% and at adult weight. these traits can be used to estimate the effect of environmental factors on growth and adult weight. the 129 g/day protein retention rate found in the present study was 17.3% lower than the rate observed for highly selected genotypes, and it supports the theory that protein retention rates are highly related to daily body weight gain patterns. the studied genotype presented a similar pattern for the dynamics of chemical components as non-selected animals.
Characterization of pig farms in the main swine producing regions of Colombia

Abstract: the goal of this study was to characterize intensive pig farms with inventories of 200 or more sows. farms were located in the three major swine rearing areas of colombia, representing 62% of the national total sow inventory. a random sample of 67 farms was evaluated, considering a 95% confidence level, 10% precision and 50% variability. a survey was applied to each farm, registering health and production indexes within each production stage, such as acclimatization, farrowing, weaning, and growing/finishing. index differences between regions were established (p<0.05) and herd performance was analyzed to identify strengths and weaknesses of the main colombian swine industry. herds in the evaluated regions had a 87.6% farrowing rate, with a total of 11.7 pigs born per litter, of which 10.8 were born alive; and 10 pigs were weaned per litter, with an average production of 22.3 pigs weaned per sow/year. the average slaughter age was 166.1 days with 102.2 kg per pig. indexes established in the present study were similar or higher compared to the ones reported for other countries. these data suggest that colombian swine producers still have great opportunities to increase profitability if production costs decrease and the number of pigs and the amount of pork produced per year is increased.

Abstract: background: the streptococcus pneumoniae occupies the first place among the causal bacteria of bacterial meningoencephalitis since the year 2000, which affects children and adults with great lethality. objective: to characterize some epidemiological and microbiological aspects from the bacterial meningoencephalitis to streptococcus pneumoniae. method: a descriptive and observational study on bacterial meningoencephalitis to streptococcus pneumoniae was performedin the microbiology lab at the provincial center of hygiene epidemiology and microbiology from 2000 to 2009. the universe was constituted by 209 patients with bacterial meningoencephalitis and the sample was formed of 50 positive patients to streptococcus pneumoniae. results: the 24,4 % of patients had streptococcus pneumoniae. all the ages were affected, especially the old men with lethality of 80 %. there was 40% of deaths in children and 60 % in adults. the bacteriological study of the cerebrospinal fluid turned out to be the most important test to establish the bacterial meningoencephalitis diagnostic to streptococcus pneumoniae. the 84% of strains was detected to be resistant to penicillin. conclusions: results demonstrate that an extreme surveillance should be carried to the meningoencephalitis to this germ in vulnerable population in the face of the great lethality observed in the positive patients to streptococcus pneumoniae.
Implementing Constructivist Web-Based Learning and Determining its Effectiveness on a Teacher Preparation Course

Abstract: This paper describes the design of an online course to reflect a constructivist approach to teaching and learning, and how students are able to identify the constructivist elements of the course. Key to this study is to determine how effectively the student participants believe the course prepares them to become K-8 teachers, and which elements of the course are most beneficial and which are not. Ninety-four percent of the students who took the course over two semesters were able to identify at least four of the constructivist elements of the course. Furthermore, 100% of the student participants found the course to be effective. The data stem from pre- and post-questionnaires and instructor course evaluations.

Abstract: The start of the Spanish Civil War lead to the dispersion of the students of the Vitoria seminary through the different fronts of war. To keep the unity of this group of pupils, as well as other members of the Basque clergy, it's founded the publication Seminario at this seminary. This publication tried to get together these dispersed students, fortify them in their beliefs and keep alive an institution affected by this war. El inicio de la Guerra Civil espa ola supone que los estudiantes del seminario de Vitoria se dispersen por los diferentes frentes bélicos. Para mantener la unidad de este grupo de alumnos, así como a otros elementos del clero vasco, desde el seminario de Vitoria se crea la publicación Seminario que pretende unir a estos estudiantes dispersos, fortalecerles en sus creencias y mantener viva una institución que se ve afectada por el ambiente bélico del momento.
