Engenharia Ambiental : Pesquisa e Tecnologia , 2009,
Abstract: Transformation of matter and production of solid waste are part of human life and activities. One of the most adequate waste disposal is the solid waste landfill. All decomposing processes of waste culminate in production of leachate with high potential of pollution. Hence, the aim of this study was to monitor the water quality of the water table in a solid waste landfill located in “Vale do A o”, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The parameters observed were: pH, total nitrogen (mgL-1), total suspended solids (mgL-1), total phosphorus (mgL-1), total coliforms (CFU) and fecal coliforms (CFU). Two sampling campaigns were performed in four observation wells present at the solid waste landfill. These samplings included the dry and rainy seasons. All the parameters analysed have presented small variation on their values. Neither fecal coliforms nor total coliforms were registered at any of the sampling sites. The results were compared to the already estabilished quality patterns and to previews results obtained before the activation of this new solid waste landfill. The results showed a good quality of groundwater in the area of the landfill in Vale do A o, based on the parameters measured, which demonstrates the efficiency of the waterproofing system.

Abstract: industrial growth has led to soil contamination by different heavy metals that constitute a problem for the normal development of several plants species. among such metals, zinc (zn) has a toxic potential when found in high levels in the soil. on the other hand, silicon (si) can alleviate the toxic effects of metals on plants. the objective of this study was to evaluate the dry matter production and anatomical changes in roots of eucalyptus urophylla seedlings under various concentrations of zn in the presence or absence of si in the nutrient solution. seedlings of e. urophylla were cultivated in pots containing 3l of clark nutritive solution (ph 5,5) in a randomized 6′2 factorial design, with six zn levels (0, 2, 50, 150, 300 and 400μmol·l-1), with and without silicon (0 and 1.78mmol·l-1). after eight weeks the dry matter production of shoots and roots, macro and micronutrients, si concentration, translocation indices and the root?s anatomy were evaluated. si addition to the solution did not influence the negative effect of zn on dry matter production of e. urophylla. in general, the concentration had little influence on the concentration and translocation index of the evaluated nutrients. the anatomic alterations caused by the excess zn were smaller when si was added to the solution.
Histórias da Arquitetura ou Arquiteturas da História: uma leitura de Austerlitz, de W. G. Sebald
Pereira, Vinícius Carvalho;
Pandaemonium Germanicum , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-88372011000200007
Abstract: in the literary tradition of the nineteenth century, romanesque images of architecture and interiors design were related to an attempt to copy reality directly, supposedly to elude the representative matter of language. however, in his novel entitled austerlitz, w. g. sebald uses these metaphors differently, with great ethical and aesthetical gains: from architectural lines and urban buildings, the character called austerlitz, an expert on capitalist architecture, infers the structure of a horrid carnage, which grew to the catastrophic shoah. behind instrumental reason and fascination for enlightenment to its highest point, the capitalist city, like the pages of sebald’s novel, immanently offers an oblique look at the destruction in the name of supposed purity, rationalism and order. therefore, sebald’s novel, by means of the architectural metaphor, reveals the horrid onslaught against german jews in the twentieth century, but it does not provide readers with an aesthetics of evil, which would disturb the reflection against the astray path of humanity.

REAJUSTES DE PRE OS BASEADOS NA MODELAGEM DE CUSTOS
Gustavo Menoncin de Carvalho Pereira
Revista PRETEXTO , 2009,
Evaluation of the Implementation of a Low Emission Zone in Lisbon  [PDF]

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2012.329137
Abstract: The city of Lisbon, like many others in the EU region, introduced a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) as a tool for improving air quality in its city centre. This kind of emission reduction schemes is always controversial since it might lead to significant changes in the daily behaviours of its inhabitants. In order to evaluate the effects of the measure, an estimation of the impact of the introduction of the Lisbon LEZ was performed. Real traffic counting and fleet characterization combined with CORINAR-based emission inventory methodology allowed to estimate the impacts of three different scenarios applied to the “business as usual” condition (current vehicle fleet) ranging from “no circulation from non- compliant vehicles” to an “aggressive fleet renewal”. Results highlight the high percentage of atmospheric emissions of PM10 and NOx that might result from certain fleets like taxis and buses, especially because there was an emphasis in standardized/normalized estimations (emissions per 1000 vehicles) in order to allow different strategic approaches. The total reduction of PM10 emissions associated to each scenario vary between 6 ton.year-1 (scenario 2) and 8 ton.year-1 (scenario 1), or 25% and 34% less emissions. In terms of NOxemission reductions vary between 6 ton.year-1 (scenario 2) and 57 ton.year-1 (scenario 1), or 1% and 7% less emissions. The Lisbon LEZ is therefore much more efficient in reducing PM10 emissions compared to NOx. Major reduction in PM10 and NOx emissions are to be expected with a moderate intervention in the (relatively old) taxi fleet in Lisbon while for passenger cars the impact is limited. However in absolute terms and due to its urban mileage passenger cars should also continue being included in Lisbon LEZ. Simultaneously, an effort in the increase of dedicated lanes for public transport should be made, for further reductions in PM10 and NOx emissions.
Rotavirus gastroenteritis in a children's hospital specialized in craniofacial malformations
Vieira, NA;Pereira, PCM;Carvalho, LR;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992010000200015
Abstract: this study aimed to verify the relationship between acute diarrhea provoked by rotavirus and different indicators of craniofacial malformations. in the hospital for rehabilitation of craniofacial anomalies, 8,724 children with cleft lip and cleft palate were divided into the following groups: acute diarrhea and infection due to rotavirus (c1, n = 62), acute diarrhea (c2, n = 153) and without acute diarrhea (c3, n = 8,509). in c1, 29.03% of the cases consisted of hospital infections associated with the hospitalization period while 38.71% of the patients were aged less than six months. the percentage of children not having breastfed was significantly higher in acute diarrhea groups. additionally, there was a seasonal prevalence of rotavirus infection between may and october. finally, the present findings indicate that rotavirus is a predominant etiological agent for gastroenteritis in children with craniofacial malformations. moreover, among infants younger than six months of age, type of craniofacial malformation, breastfeeding difficulty, socioeconomic level and longer hospitalization period appear to contribute to higher infection morbidity.
