Edge Detection from MRI and DTI Images with an Anisotropic Vector Field Flow Using a Divergence Map
Donatella Giuliani
Algorithms , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/a5040636
Abstract: The aim of this work is the extraction of edges from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) images by a deformable contour procedure, using an external force field derived from an anisotropic flow. Moreover, we introduce a divergence map in order to check the convergence of the process. As we know from vector calculus, divergence is a measure of the magnitude of a vector field convergence at a given point. Thus by means level curves of the divergence map, we have automatically selected an initial contour for the deformation process. If the initial curve includes the areas from which the vector field diverges, it will be able to push the curve towards the edges. Furthermore the divergence map highlights the presence of curves pointing to the most significant geometric parts of boundaries corresponding to high curvature values. In this way, the skeleton of the extracted object will be rather well defined and may subsequently be employed in shape analysis and morphological studies.
The dawn of mesoscopic approach in drug development
Annali dell'Istituto Superiore di Sanità , 2011, DOI: 10.4415/ANN_11_01_13
Abstract: the feeling of the reaching of a crucial turning point is shared by the whole spectrum of sciences. the main features of this turning point are basically identical across different disciplines and can be interpreted as a re-location of the most relevant level of explanation (and consequently intervention for more applicative fields) from the microscopic to the so called mesoscopic level. here, the character of the mesoscopic approach in drug development field will be briefly commented.

Comparison of Biological Shapes Using Extracted Edges Analyzed with Polynomial Hermite Interpolation
Donatella Giuliani
Modern Applied Science , 2010, DOI: 10.5539/mas.v4n4p3
Abstract: The aim of this work is the analysis of biological bi-dimensional structures in order to study their shapes during the growing process. At first we have proceeded to extraction of deformable contours of biological forms using as external forces, the generalized gradient vector flow, GGVF (Xu C. Prince I.J.,1998b). In this study, by evaluating the map of divergence associated with the GGVF field we automatically generate the initial contour using the level curves of a divergence map, therefore we obtain the final curve with a great accuracy. Finally, the study of the extracted edges was achieved by polynomial piecewise Hermite interpolation, in order to carry out a comparative analysis of morphology.

Despite it decriminalization in 1791, incest continues to be seen as a crime and as a monstrosity in the French social imaginary. Even though disgraceful and subject of taboo, the French judicial archives saved the traces of incest in the numerous trials intended for rape or attentat à la pudeur during the nineteenth century. Furthermore, as a deviance, the incest was a subject of scientific studies all along the century that contributed to write the crime and it social imaginary. Then, the judicial archives and their exclusive competences on the definition of the crime must be questioned. A fine study on the practice of the French magistrates and on the discourses held by the actors of the crime seems to be a relevant key to approach the criminal sphere and to question the penal exclusivity of the criminality for the historian. What can this confrontation between the discourses reveal on the incest and its prohibition in the nineteenth century France ?
Alfonso Giuliani
Revue de la Régulation : Capitalisme, Institutions, Pouvoirs , 2011,
Abstract: Some elements of Veblen’s institutionalism can offer an interesting interpretation of Graziani’s scheme of the Monetary Theory of Production. On the analytical level, this approach which includes consumer behaviour and choices of firms is based on a methodology of ‘macro-foundation of microeconomics’. In the first case, individual consumer choices are deeply influenced by ‘instincts’, or habits, and especially emulation (i.e. leisure class) in opposition with the axiom of rational choice. In the second case, the company is considered as a place of conflicts. Conflicts are embodied in opposition between the will of the ‘technical’ and the goal of businessmen. The technical want to apply the knowledge gained by expanding output (motived by workmanship), while the businessmen want to contract the production to increase prices and profits (predatory instinct). The volume of production and the employment rate depends crucially on the outcome of bargaining within the enterprises. This setting allows us to resolve the ‘paradox of profits’ in two ways: i) considering the steady increase in consumption by rentier, financed by banks (and/or owners of the banks themselves); ii) assuming heterogeneity of firms allow the possibility that the failure of some firms can provide extra monetary profits for the other firms.
