Abstract: this paper was aimed at knowing the frequency, clinico-biochemical, immunologic and genetic characteristics of autoimmune diabetes in adults (lada) in 1 000 type 2 diabetic patients aged 35 or over with different times of duration of diabetes. glycemia, anti-pancreatic islet cell antibodies (ica), anti-gad65 antibodies, anti-ica512bdc/ia2 antibodies, anti-microsomal thyroid antibodies (amt), anti-gastric parietal antibodies (agp), antinuclear antibodies (an), microalbuminuria and peptide c during fasting were determined. these patients were surveyed and some clinical characteristics were registered. they were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of ica. all the type 2 + diabetics for anti-islet cell autoantibodies (ica and/or antigad65) were identified as lada. 3.4 % of type 2 ica + were detected. 22.0 % of type 2 ica - diabetics had anti-gad65 antibodies. it was found that type 2 ica + diabetics were younger, that their diabetes was shorter, that they had lower bmi, reduced levels of fasting peptide c, less dm2 history family (parents), lower values of diastolic and systolic arterial pressure, higher presence of anti-gad65 antibodies, amt and agp in comparison with type 2 ica - diabetics. it was observed that type 2 ica+ diabetics (lada) have specific characteristics that make them similar to type 1 diabetics, which would lead to important variations in their treatment and evolution as regards type 2 ica - diabetics. among the cuban type 2 diabetics it was detected a low frequency of ica and a high frequency of gad, which were different to those found in the caucasian populations. the anti-gad65 antibodies were higher than ica to detect lada. the clinical and immunological characteristics of these patients show the slow progression of the autoimmune destruction of b-cells with therapeutic implications.

Revista Facultad Nacional de Agronomía, Medellín , 2011,
Abstract: purins or liquid fermented extracts of chipaca (bidens pilosa l.) were prepared to establish the inhibitory effect of the actinomycetes found in such biopharmaceutical preparations on the growth of phytophthora infestans (mont) de bary, the causative of potato late blight disease. four purins made from flowers, roots, leaf-steams and a mixture of them were prepared; 25 actinomycete isolates were obtained from these purins and their ability to resist challenge by p. infestans was ascertained in medium plates using the ring gauze technique and establishing initial concentrations of spores by microscopic counting in neubauer chamber. actinomycetes did not grow in flower purin as rhizosphere soil was not used in its preparation or because this particular ph (9) was higher than the normal range of 6 to 8 ph. oomycete growth was inhibed in 8 actinomycete isolates (33.3% - 77.8% inhibition) from roots, stem-leaves and plant part purin mixtures. the greatest inhibition was obtained from isolates ac001, ac010, ac011 and ac025 (0.4, 6.0, 3.0 and 3.6 x 105 spore ml-1 count).

Purins or liquid fermented extracts of chipaca (Bidens pilosa L.) were prepared to establish the inhibitory effect of the actinomycetes found in such biopharmaceutical preparations on the growth of Phytophthora infestans (Mont) de Bary, the causative of potato late blight disease. Several sputum and blood culture simples from a Cuban HIV/AIDS patient were analyzed to discard the presence of alcohol acid resistant bacillus. After 2-3 weeks the culture revealed in both kinds of samples some colonies from non-pigmented mycobacterium strain with slow growth and belonging to III Runyon Group. This strain was classified as Mycobacterium avium by conventional methods established for mycobacterium identification. To diagnostic confirmative method was used the analysis of fraction mycolic acid by bi-dimensional thin layer chromatography. The main objective of this study was to report the first case of systemic mycobacteriosis in a Cuban HIV/AIDS patient.

Abstract: Background Recent studies suggest potential roles of the endocannabinoid system in gastrointestinal inflammation. Although cannabinoid CB2 receptor expression is increased in inflammatory disorders, the presence and function of the remaining proteins of the endocannabinoid system in the colonic tissue is not well characterized. Methodology Cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, the enzymes for endocannabinoid biosynthesis DAGLα, DAGLβ and NAPE-PLD, and the endocannabinoid-degradating enzymes FAAH and MAGL were analysed in both acute untreated active ulcerative pancolitis and treated quiescent patients in comparison with healthy human colonic tissue by immunocytochemistry. Analyses were carried out according to clinical criteria, taking into account the severity at onset and treatment received. Principal Findings Western blot and immunocytochemistry indicated that the endocannabinoid system is present in the colonic tissue, but it shows a differential distribution in epithelium, lamina propria, smooth muscle and enteric plexi. Quantification of epithelial immunoreactivity showed an increase of CB2 receptor, DAGLα and MAGL expression, mainly in mild and moderate pancolitis patients. In contrast, NAPE-PLD expression decreased in moderate and severe pancolitis patients. During quiescent pancolitis, CB1, CB2 and DAGLα expression dropped, while NAPE-PLD expression rose, mainly in patients treated with 5-ASA or 5-ASA+corticosteroids. The number of immune cells containing MAGL and FAAH in the lamina propria increased in acute pancolitis patients, but dropped after treatment. Conclusions Endocannabinoids signaling pathway, through CB2 receptor, may reduce colitis-associated inflammation suggesting a potential drugable target for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.
