Abstract: The article deals with the relationships between environmental risk and Geography, discussing the categories involved in environmental risk, the evaluation methods and spatial dimensions. It is suggested that the environmental risk must be thought as a structured approach in the spatial and temporal scales and related to the everyday life in the cities.

This paper provides the outcome of an investigation of the rationalities and ethical-political tensions expressed in the articles on school education conveyed by the newspaper Folha de S o Paulo, from December 1996 - from the enactment of the Brazilian Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education in force - to November 2006. Through an analysis of the empirical data headed by some of Michel Foucault's theoretical and methodological operators, it was possible to verify that, besides the proliferation of educational reports on the newspaper, the printed press aggregates, in a repetitive and circular way, reparative or reformist conceptions of contemporary school practices, in line with the academic production, the experts' knowledge, and the economic and political injunctions. In doing so, the journalistic discourse establishes itself as a powerful resource for the governmentalization of the attitudes and values shared by the population concerning the nature and range of the educational work nowadays.
Inscri??o e circula??o: novas visibilidades e configura??es do espa?o público em S?o Paulo
Caldeira, Teresa Pires do Rio;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002012000300002
Abstract: a series of interventions by young men are transforming public spaces in s?o paulo and articulating anew the profound social inequalities that have always marked them. the new urban practices include graffiti, pixa??o (s?o paulo's style of tagging), and new modes of moving around the city (motorcycling, skateboarding and parkour). they give young men from the peripheries a new visibility in the city and thus challenge previous understandings about the functioning of public spaces. however, these interventions are contradictory: they affirm rights to the city while fracturing the public; expose discrimination but refuse integration. they test the limits of the democratization process by simultaneously expanding the openness of the democratic public sphere while challenging it with transgressive actions ranging from the mildly illicit to the criminal.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the association between anthropometric indexes - body mass index (bmi) and waist circumference (wc) - and hypertension, and to evaluate the predictive value of these indexes in detecting hypertension. methods: cross-sectional population study conducted in the city of goiania (go) with a sample of 1,238 adults aged twenty to 64 years, in 2001. total obesity was defined as bmi > 30 kg/m2; abdominal obesity was defined as level 2 wc > 88 cm for women and > 102 cm for men, and hypertension was defined as systolic pressure > 140 mmhg, or diastolic pressure > 90 mmhg, or utilization of hypotensive drugs). multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the associations between anthropometric indexes and hypertension. the receiver operating characteristic (roc) curve analysis was used to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of bmi (> 30) and level 2 wc as predictive factors of hypertension, and to determine the best predictive cut-off points for hypertension. results: wc was associated with hypertension in both genders. level 2 wc and bmi >30 kg/m2 showed a low sensitivity in identifying hypertension. the best predictive cut-off points for hypertension coincided with level 1 wc (> 80 cm) and with bmi >25 kg/m2 (overweight) for women, and were lower than the values of level 1 wc and of overweight for men. conclusion: level 2 wc and bmi > 30 kg/m2 are not adequate to identify the groups at the highest risk of hypertension, since this risk rises with small increases in adiposity.

Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032004000300003
Abstract: purpose: to investigate the glomerular alterations in patients with severe preeclampsia, as well as to evaluate the evolution of these lesions, relating them to the moment of the renal biopsy. methods: seventy-two pregnant women with hypertensive syndrome underwent renal biopsy in the puerperium. appropriate samples for electron microscopic examination were obtained from 39 patients and grouped as follows: 25 with preeclampsia and 14 with superimposed preeclampsia. biopsy findings were classified into: normal kidney, endothelial cell edema, mesangial expansion, mesangial interposition, subendothelial fibrinoid deposits, and podocyte fusion. results: the most frequent alterations found in both groups were subendothelial fibrinoid deposits and podocyte fusion. endothelial edema was present in 84% of the preeclampsia patients and in 92.9% of the superimposed preeclampsia cases. there was no association between the degree of hypertension and the severity of endothelial edema. a tendency to mesangial interposition was observed in patients who had a biopsy after the seventh day after delivery. podocyte fusion showed a significant association with 24-hour proteinuria. conclusions: the above mentioned glomerular alterations represent a spectrum of complex and dynamic lesions that together represent the ultrastructural characteristics of preeclampsia which should no longer be diagnosed based only on the presence or absence of endothelial edema.
