CRITIQUING AUSTRALIA’S KNOWLEDGE STRATEGY: HOW CAN WE BETTER POSITION OURSELVES IN A GLOBAL COMMUNITY?

Abstract: This paper will provide critical analysis of Australia’ knowledge strategy, conducted from the perspective that driving a national knowledge strategy is the predominant responsibility of government for reasons of impartiality. As such critique will be focused upon the actionsundertaken by the Australian government to position the nation as a Knowledge-based Economy (KBE) competitively within the global community. It will be argued that to qualify for the title of “knowledge nation” the country needs to perform well across a composite range of factors. Examination of composite strategies will be conducted within a model of Knowledge Development, categorising the government’s knowledge sourcing, abstraction, conversion, diffusion and refinement strategies. The paper will conclude with recommendations for improving Australia’s position within the global knowledge economy and consequently within the global information community.
Room-Temperature Humidity Sensing Using Graphene Oxide Thin Films  [PDF]

Abstract: In this article, we report on a room-temperature humidity sensing device using graphene oxide (GO) thin films synthesized by chemical exfoliation. Changes in the device conductivity are measured for varying relative humidity in the experimental chamber. Experiments are carried out for relative humidity varying from 30% to 95%. We observe a difference in the results obtained for low relative humidity (<50%) and high relative humidity (>50%), and propose a sensing mechanism to explain this difference. Although the sensor exhibits some hysteresis at high relative humidities, a method to “reset” the sensor is also proposed. The sensing device has high sensitivity and fast response time.
Photoreduction and Thermal Properties of Graphene-Based Flexible Films  [PDF]

Abstract: In the present study, we report on an efficient method for large-area photoreduction of graphene oxide flexible films. The laser-based reduction can be carried out in situ and can be tuned to attain the properties required. A systematic study has been conducted to evaluate the variation of the degree of reduction with the actual reduction temperature, which is measured using an infrared thermal camera. Local reduction temperature is varied up to 350°C, and the degree of reduction is measured using the C/O ratio. The C/O ratio is increased from 2:1 for graphene oxide to 10:1 for reduced graphene oxide. This high degree of reduction is observed at low temperatures, and also in a short period of time. Thermal conductivity properties calculated using the temperature distribution shows the in-plane thermal conductivities of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are a few orders of magnitude lower than single layer graphene. This can be attributed to oxygen-defect scattering, and also due to the heat conduction through the thickness of the sample by way of contact between adjacent flakes. This photoreduction method provides a way for roll-to-roll scalable production of graphene-based flexible films.

Abstract: The paper discusses about the influence of Self-Hypnosis on the three important qualities determining the personality trait of an individual namely: Internal Drive (ID), Ego and Super Ego. Self-Hypnosis is a technique that regulates one’s own mind by setting attributes to achieve the basic goals in life having a wider range of variation from one individual to another. There is a constant conflict occurring in an individual’s mind between ID, Ego, and Super Ego throughout his life time till death. The paper work attempts to bring certain facts about the ID, Ego and Super Ego and how to balance between the three through Self-Hypnosis.

Abstract: Reflective teaching-learning methodology is a self evaluation technique adopted by teachers to promote motivation within one’s own self in order to make teaching-learning process more interesting and effective task. “If the teacher integrates mind tools such as metaphorical thinking and visual imagery in his/her reflective teaching methodology, the teaching-learning process becomes more challenging, the teacher will develop radiant or divergent thinking as the result teaching-learning process becomes learner centered. The work shop targets teachers or teacher trainees to get acquainted with the technique of practicing metaphorical thinking and visual imagery in reflective teaching methodology. Metaphorical thinking [1] is a natural phenomenon of the human brain to find similarity between two different universes of meaning. Visual imagery is another natural phenomenon in which human brain associates text material with structures in one’s own mind’s eye. Integrating these two mind tools consciously in reflective teaching-learning process transforms the teachers as well as teacher trainees to highly self motivated individuals.
Moments and Cumulants of Diffraction Profiles Broadened by Stacking Faults  [PDF]

Abstract: Line broadening in a diffraction intensity profile of powdered crystalline materials due to stacking fault has been characterized in terms of the zeroth, first, second, third, and fourth moments and the fourth cumulant. Calculations have been derived showing that the first moment causes a shift in the peak position of the profile while the third moment affects its shape. The intensity expression has been derived on the basis of usual Cartesian coordinates and also of polar coordinates indicated by the probability of the fault and the reciprocal lattice parameter as the two axes. The expressions for the fourth cumulant have also been so derived. Here we have used three different approaches to determine methods for calculating the fourth cumulant due to stacking faults. The three forms of the equations derived here are for different coordinate systems, but will arrive at the same answers.

Theoretical Model of Diffraction Line Profiles as Combinations of Gaussian and Cauchy Distributions  [PDF]

Abstract:
Previously we derived equations determining line broadening in ax-ray diffraction profile due to stacking faults. Here, we will consider line broadening due to particle size and strain which are the other factors affecting line broadening in a diffraction profile. When line broadening in a diffraction profile is due to particle size and strain, the theoretical model of the sample under study is either a Gaussian or a Cauchy function or a combination of these functions, e.g. Voigt and Pseudovoigt functions. Although the overall nature of these functions can be determined by Mitra’s R(x) test and the Pearson and Hartley x test, details of a predicted model will be lacking. Development of a mathematical model to predict various parameters before embarking upon the actual experiment would enable correction of significant sources of error prior to calculations. Therefore, in this study, predictors of integral width, Fourier Transform, Second and Fourth Moment and Fourth Cumulant of samples represented by Gauss, Cauchy, Voigt and Pseudovoigt functions have been worked out. An additional parameter, the coefficient of excess, which is the ratio of the Fourth Moment to three times the square of the Second Moment, has been proposed. For a Gaussian profile the coefficient of excess is one, whereas for Cauchy distributions, it is a function of the lattice variable. This parameter can also be used for determining the type of distribution present in aggregates of distorted crystallites. Programs used to define the crystal structure of materials need to take this parameter into consideration.

Abstract: Self-analysis is an effective psychoanalytical technique to analyze one’s own personality and behavior. This technique is an effective approach in establishing concrete learning among knowledge seekers. The experiment is conducted on 50 teachers by applying self-analysis technique. For example, the concept to be taught is “Learning”, each teacher has to introspect on the topic “Learning” by answering the questionnaire on the components of “Learning” namely i) knowledge; 2) behavior; 3) skills and 4) values. Each of these components consists of 20 statements which analysis the concept “Learning” because knowledge, behavior, skills and values are the major outcome of “Learning”. By self-introspection every teacher arrives at clear specific learning objectives regarding the concept to be taught. This method helps the teachers to arrive at a clear picture to frame the lesson-plan to meet learning outcomes.

Abstract: In this paper, we obtain some new characterizations of the range symmetric matrices in the Minkowski Space M by using the Block representation of the matrices. These characterizations are used to establish some results on the partial ordering of the range symmetric matrices with respect to the Minkowski adjoint. Further, we establish some results regarding the partial ordering of m-projectors with respect to the Minkowski adjoint and manipulate them to characterize some sets of range symmetric elements in the Minkowski Space M. All the results obtained in this paper are an extension to the Minkowski space of those given by A. Hernandez, et al. in [The star partial order and the eigenprojection at 0 on EP matrices, Applied Mathematics and Computation, 218: 10669-10678, 2012].
