Abstract: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the Leptospirosis occurrence in stray dogs found in the campus of Universidade Estadual de Londrina – PR., from July to September 2007. The MAT (Microscopic Agglutination Test) was made as diagnostic serological test in 33 serum samples and the direct dark-field microscopy (DFM) in 10 urine samples. In the MAT, seven samples (21,21%) reacted and antibodies against the serovars Canicola, Pyrogenes and Castellonis were detected with titles of 200 to 400. In the DFM, were visualized typical Leptospira spp. morphology and motility structures in one sample. These data indicate the necessity of stray dogs’ population control because it may represents a public health problem in the university campus population.

When possibility dominates probability. Global pressures on a local border town: the real estate market of Ortigia

Abstract: The real estate market is a highly communicative human and social place in which individual creativity interacts with the urban structure. The rising tendency of the property value and quality stimulates global investors to demand more and more qualified assets. This process involves the public administration, whose policies should focus on the acquisition, for the community’s benefit, of a significant part of the surplus of the real estate investments. The appraisal point of view, and particularly the income method, focuses on the capability of the cap rate to represent and integrate the private possibilities with the public perspectives. The outline of the real estate market of Ortigia shows some characters of the capital goods, whose value can be figured out by crossing the theory of the capital and the income method.

Abstract: The bacteria Staphylococcus aureus is found in the nasal passages, mouth and skin of the human population and stands out among foodborne diseases. Some causes of foodborne illness are related with food, handlers, and utensils contamination in a hospital’s nutrition service. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of S. aureus in food handlers, equipment, counter-tops and utensils of the nutrition service of a teaching hospital. Samples of the environment, hands and nasal mucosa of employees of a nutrition service were collected with two sterile swabs, in 2016, March and June. A total of 134 samples were obtained, which were submitted to characterization tests Biochemistry and morphotinorial (gram staining, catalase and coagulase tests in tube), phenotypic evaluation by drug diffusion technique and D-test approach, and the biofilm phenotype characterization by culture on Congo Red Agar. Results showed high rates of S. aureus colonization, mainly in the kitchen, high frequency of antimicrobial resistance, especially erythromycin and the presence of multi-resistant microorganisms. Large number of positive samples was also found for biofilm production, with totality for the samples of handlers. We highlight the relevance of the data in virtue of the serious consequences and risks that can be triggered in the hospital environment.

Gall-forming insect attack patterns: a test of the Plant Vigor and the Resource Concentration Hypotheses

Biotemas , 2013,
Abstract: We tested the following two hypotheses to investigate the attack patterns by gall-inducing insects on their host plant Eriotheca pubescens: (i) vigorous modules are more often attacked by galling insects; and (ii) E. pubescens trees associated with a higher density of co-specific individuals have a higher gall abundance. We collected terminal branches from the host plant to measure their module lengths and gall richness and abundance and determined the E. pubescens densities in a 5m radius around the focal individual. There was a higher availability of short branches. Among the four gall morphotypes, two preferred the higher branches, and the other two morphotypes had no shoot length preference. Gall attack did not present a relationship with the host plant density. Thus, the vigor of E. pubescens was a determining factor only for some gall morphotypes. In contrast, the resource concentration hypothesis was not important at an intraspecific level for gall attack in this system.
