Introduction: the sperm capacitation test and the spermicidal activity or immobilization using plant extracts, allows for an increase in the current knowledge on the reproductive area. Methods: human spermatozoa were incubated with each extract and their motility and viability were evaluated. Additionally, sperm capacitation was evaluated using bovine serum albumin. Results: after an initial assessment of the effect of plant extracts on human spermatozoa, the extracts from B. frutescens and B. setaceas were selected for capacitating tests since they did not change the sperm motility and viability. Additionally, M. platyclada, Z. lenticulare and P. subpedale extracts were selected for immobilization or spermicidal activities tests because they had had an effect on sperm progressive motility. Conclusions: this study suggested three plants with promising spermicidal effect; in addition to the standardization of a biological system, allowing the assessment of the capacitation effect of some extracts over huma

Self-Evidence
Ginet, Carl
Veritas , 2009,
This paper develops an account of what it is for a proposition to be self-evident to someone, based on the idea that certain propositions are such that to fully understand them is to believe them. It argues that when a proposition p is self-evident to one, one has non-inferential a priori justification for believing that p and, a welcome feature, a justification that does not involve exercising any special sort of intuitive faculty; if, in addition, it is true that p and there exists no reason to believe that the proposition that p is incoherent, then one knows a priori that p. The paper argues that certain deeply contingent truths, e. g. , the truth that I would now express by saying “I exist”, can be self-evident to, and thus known a priori by, the person they are about at the time they are about; but, since they cannot be known a priori, or even expressed, by anyone else or at any other time, they should not count as a priori truths.
Endocrinología y epistemología: el eje hipotálamo-hipófisis-ovario revisitado
Henao,Guillermo;
Revista Colombiana de Obstetricia y Ginecología , 2004,
Abstract: history of the discovery of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and its role in nervous, endocrine and reproductive systems is related to conceptions about the existence of subtle substances formerly named animal spirits and recently as hormones, neurotransmitters, and others. this research usually follows a lineal series model, a?b type, according to the ?one cause, one effect? principle. nevertheless, its discovery was performed in a contrary sense, ?effect-cause?. this scheme was broken for another discoveries: hormone feed-back -one effect may acts on its own cause-, and multiple factors, including outside the system, have a random influence. therefore, there are superpositions between exocrine, endocrine, immunologic and nervous systems and its traditional limits may don?t appear. so, diagnostic and therapeutic methods may be insufficient for its purposes. there are practical consequences related to treatment and ethics in medical exercise.
Endocrinología y epistemología: el eje hipotálamo-hipófisis-ovario revisitado Epistemology and endocrinology: the hypothalamic-hypophysis-ovary axis revisited
