Catastrophic Childhood Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Giancarlo Di GENNARO,Antonio SPARANO,Addolorata MASCIA,Fabio SEBASTIANO
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2005,
Abstract: Focal epilepsy, more frequently of extratemporal type, in children can present with a rapidly progressing course of intractable, severe epilepsy, associated to cognitive regression or stagnation. We present a typical example of such a patient with focal seizures due to a temporal lobe cortical lesion of developmental origin. Brain MRI revealed abnormalities in the right temporal lobe and Video-EEG monitoring revealed episodes clinically characterized by epileptic spasms followed by automotor seizures, with EEG findings suggestive of a right temporal lobe focus. Surgical resection resulted in excellent outcome.
Focal cortical dysplasia and pericentric inversion of chromosome 9: a case report
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2004,
Abstract: A child affected by multiple dysmorphisms and behavioral disorders with pericentric inversion on chromosome 9 [46 XY inv 9 (p11q11)] is reported. In this patient, a focal cortical dysplasia in right temporal lobe was observed on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. To our knowledge, this report is the first description of focal cortical dysplasia in a patient of an occidental country with pericentric inversion of chromosome. 9. The relationship between alterations localised on chromosome 9 and cerebral cortical organisation disorders is discussed.
Bandgap properties of low index contrast aperiodically ordered photonic quasicrystals

Physics , 2009,
Abstract: We numerically analyze, using Finite Difference Time Domain simulations, the bandgap properties of photonic quasicrystals with a low index contrast. We compared 8-, 10- and 12-fold symmetry aperiodically ordered lattices with different spatial tiling. Our results show that tiling design, more than symmetry, determines the transmission properties of these structures.
Charm-quark fragmentation with an effective coupling constant
Corcella, Gennaro;Ferrera, Giancarlo
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007, DOI: 10.1088/1126-6708/2007/12/029
Abstract: We use a recently proposed non-perturbative model, based on an effective strong coupling constant and free from tunable parameters, to study c-flavoured hadron production in e+e- annihilation. Charm-quark production is described in the framework of perturbative fragmentation functions, with NLO coefficient functions, NLL non-singlet DGLAP evolution and NNLL large-x resummation. We model hadronization effects by means of the effective coupling constant in the NNLO approximation and compare our results with experimental data taken at the Z0 pole and at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We find that, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, our model is able to give a reasonable description of D*+-meson spectra from ALEPH for x<1-Lambda/m_c. More serious discrepancies are instead present when comparing with D and D^* data from BELLE and CLEO in x-space. Within the errors, our model is nonetheless capable of reproducing the first ten Mellin moments of all considered data sets. However, the fairly large theoretical uncertainties call for a full NNLO/NNLL analysis.
The War Guilt Dislocation: The Court of Self-Condemnation La dislocazione della war guilt: il tribunale dell'autocondanna
Paola Di Gennaro
Between , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of this article has been the analysis of a few novels written right after the Second World War and during the following decade; novels that bring the stain of the short-circuit between what is legally judged and what the indomitable conscience imputes to itself. In these works, rather than objective guilt – as Freud and many others intended it – we can find subjective guilt. This guilt is almost ancestral, inalienable to the human being, and, in those historical contingencies, increased by much more. In fact, the war and postwar literature had to reckon with a new historical situation: the collective psychosis of the Bomb fear, but also, more deeply, of the war guilt, felt both individually and collectively. Survivor guilt and postwar guilt are variants of the same feeling that became universal under the push of what had been existential in the previous century. In particular, attention has been paid to an English novel of the ’40, Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano (1947), and to a German one, Der Tod in Rom (Death in Rome, 1954) by Wolfgang Koeppen, a novel written in one of the nations that had probably been the most touched by the postwar guilt. One of the most interesting aspects emerging in this research is the paradox that this short-circuit creates in the texts: those who feels ‘guilty’ are frequently without any retraceable fault, and, on the contrary, those who are guilty before the eyes of the collective tribunal do not bring any sense of guilt. Through a ‘middle-distance reading’ of the works, it has been tried to demonstrate how international law, in certain moments more than in others, does not have any authority on the dramatic power of the narrative judgement. Here literature is to deconstruct the judiciary power, in disproving it, criticising it, and deriding it explicitly or implicitly, playing with the roles of judge and criminal – who is, in most cases, self-condemned.
The Hartshorne-Rao module of curves on rational normal scrolls
Roberta Di Gennaro
Le Matematiche , 2000,
Abstract: We study the Hartshorne-Rao module of curves lying on a rational normal scroll S_e of invariant e ≥ 0 in P^{e+3} . We calculate the Rao function, we characterize the aCM curves on S_e . Finally, we give an algorithm to check if a curve is aC M or not and, in the second case, to calculate the Rao function.
Bone industry at the Bronze Age settlement of Mursia, Pantelleria.
Marcello Di Gennaro
IpoTESI di Preistoria , 2010,
Abstract: The whole bone industry, coming from the excavations that took place between 2001 and 2005 on the site of Mursia, consists of 137 finds, mostly awls and drills. In order to create a typology of the industry, it was performed the determination, where possible, of species and anatomical parts and the technological and functional analysis. Specifically, to understand the technological aspects, modes of production and reconstruction of the chains, the production techniques through the manufacturing and finishing of tools have been performed experimentally. Afterward, especially for the understanding of the functional aspects so the real use of tools, have been performed traces of use and production analysis, observed by light microscopy and SEM, performing comparisons with experimental traceological models, with studies observed in existing literature and with ethnographic contexts. The creation of a database allows to explicit all aspects of each artifact, its location and any observations to obtain the statistical data, of recurrence of types and shapes. It allows to create plans, explanatory charts and diagrams relating to every metric, formal and technical aspects of the instruments, as well as the statistical analysis of the spatial distribution of artifacts in different settings and stratigraphic levels. This multidisciplinary approach has allowed a detailed typological classification of the collection, which may be a reference point for materials coming from Mursia in future excavations.
The quot functor of a quasi-coherent sheaf
Gennaro Di Brino
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We build an infinite dimensional scheme parametrizing isomorphism classes of coherent quotients of a quasi-coherent sheaf on a projective scheme. The main tool to achieve the construction is a version of Grothendieck's Grassmannian embedding combined with a result of Deligne, realizing quasi-coherent sheaves as ind-objects in the category of quasi-coherent sheaves of finite presentation. We end our treatment with the discussion of a special case in which we can retain an analog of the Grassmannian embedding.
