Abstract: Nucleotide and amino acid sequence of MSP have been determined by PCR amplification and sequencing in seventeen T. denticola clinical specimens to evaluate the genetic variability and the philogenetic relationship of the T. denticola msp gene among the different amplified sequence of positive samples. In silico antigenic analysis was performed on each MSP sequences to determined possible antigenic variation. The msp sequences showed two highly conserved 5' and 3' ends and a central region that varies substantially. Phylogenetic analysis categorized the 17 specimens into 2 principal groups, suggesting a low rate of evolutionary variability and an elevated degree of conservation of msp in clinically derived genetic material. Analysis of the predicted antigenic variability between isolates, demonstrated that the major differences lay between amino acids 200 and 300.These findings showed for the first time, the nucleotide and amino acids variation of the msp gene in infecting T. denticola, in vivo. This data suggested that the antigenic variability found in to the MSP molecule, may be an important factor involved in immune evasion by T. denticola.Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that is characterized by the progressive destruction of periodontal tissue [1]. This common infection is caused by polymicrobial flora, comprising several anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria. The oral spirochete Treponema denticola is often isolated from the affected sites and plays an important role in the polymicrobial pathogenesis of acute and chronic periodontal disease [2,3]. The outer membrane of T. denticola bears several antigens that control the interaction with host cells and tissues thus contributing to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. In particular, the major surface protein (MSP) has been recently reported to alter the normal homeostasis of endothelial cells in vitro [4]. Further, MSP mediates the adhesion to and cytopathic effects of T. denticola on host cells
Interplay between Human Cytomegalovirus and Intrinsic/Innate Host Responses: A Complex Bidirectional Relationship

Mediators of Inflammation , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/607276
Abstract: The interaction between human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and its host is a complex process that begins with viral attachment and entry into host cells, culminating in the development of a specific adaptive response that clears the acute infection but fails to eradicate HCMV. We review the viral and cellular partners that mediate early host responses to HCMV with regard to the interaction between structural components of virions (viral glycoproteins) and cellular receptors (attachment/entry receptors, toll-like receptors, and other nucleic acid sensors) or intrinsic factors (PML, hDaxx, Sp100, viperin, interferon inducible protein 16), the reactions of innate immune cells (antigen presenting cells and natural killer cells), the numerous mechanisms of viral immunoevasion, and the potential exploitation of events that are associated with early phases of virus-host interplay as a therapeutic strategy.

Non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic liver diseases: Implementation in clinical practice and decisional algorithms
Giada Sebastiani
World Journal of Gastroenterology , 2009,
Abstract: Chronic hepatitis B and C together with alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases represent the major causes of progressive liver disease that can eventually evolve into cirrhosis and its end-stage complications, including decompensation, bleeding and liver cancer. Formation and accumulation of fibrosis in the liver is the common pathway that leads to an evolutive liver disease. Precise definition of liver fibrosis stage is essential for management of the patient in clinical practice since the presence of bridging fibrosis represents a strong indication for antiviral therapy for chronic viral hepatitis, while cirrhosis requires a specific follow-up including screening for esophageal varices and hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver biopsy has always represented the standard of reference for assessment of hepatic fibrosis but it has some limitations being invasive, costly and prone to sampling errors. Recently, blood markers and instrumental methods have been proposed for the non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis. However, there are still some doubts as to their implementation in clinical practice and a real consensus on how and when to use them is not still available. This is due to an unsatisfactory accuracy for some of them, and to an incomplete validation for others. Some studies suggest that performance of non-invasive methods for liver fibrosis assessment may increase when they are combined. Combination algorithms of non-invasive methods for assessing liver fibrosis may represent a rational and reliable approach to implement non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in clinical practice and to reduce rather than abolish liver biopsies.
Katherine Philips, Aphra Behn, and Sylvia Plath: “a passionate journey” towards “a revolution in female manners”
Giada Cacciavilni
Coolabah , 2010,
Abstract: Katherine Philips, Aphra Behn, and Sylvia Plath were artists whostruggled during their lives to express their thoughts and ideas. In addition to this, beingwomen, they found it hard to be recognised as writers and their fight against socialconventions and norms is now considered of huge importance since they managed toopen doors for women that came after them. Katherine Philips started a femininerevolution which was taken over by Aphra Behn, and by Sylvia Plath about threecenturies later. The three authors rebelled against the feminine mystique of their timeand the subsequent domestification of women. In addition to this, they refused to bemen’s shadows and raised a new awareness of women as active subjects that couldfinally use their voices to express themselves. The aim of this essay is to explore andinterpret the ways in which these three women managed to subvert the prescribed rolethat society had in store for them by touching on different topics related to gender andthe relationship between men and women. I will focus on their outlook on marriage andon women’s roles in society.
From a kinetic equation to a diffusion under an anomalous scaling
Giada Basile
Mathematics , 2011, DOI: 10.1007/s10955-013-0908-4
Abstract: A linear Boltzmann equation is interpreted as the forward equation for the probability density of a Markov process (K(t), i(t), Y(t)), where (K(t), i(t)) is an autonomous reversible jump process, with waiting times between two jumps with finite expectation value but infinite variance, and Y(t) is an additive functional of K(t). We prove that under an anomalous rescaling Y converges in distribution to a two-dimensional Brownian motion. As a consequence, the appropriately rescaled solution of the Boltzmann equation converges to a diffusion equation.

Law and Justice on TV. The Wire vs. CSI and Ally McBeal La legge e la giustizia in TV. The Wire a confronto con CSI e Ally McBeal
Gianluigi Rossini
Between , 2012,
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse the ways in which law is represented in the celebrated TV series The Wire, broadcasted in United States between 2002 and 2008. The analysis focuses particularly on the thematization of the relationship between the concept of law and that of justice, that is between 'positive law' and 'natural law'. This theme is pursued in the context of American television series of great success such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS, 2000-) and Ally McBeal (Fox, 1997-2002) . The comparison highlights the way in which in The Wire the terms of the problem are completely eroded through the representation of a sort of 'disappearance of justice'. In this series the natural law becomes insignificant both because it is no more the point of reference of the actions activated by the institutions, and because an informed, in-depth and not prejudicial gaze on the social reality of the contemporary metropolis brings into question the very idea of a justice absolute and distanced from the contingent circumstances.
Christine Baron e Manfed Engel (Eds.), Realism/Anti-Realism in 20th Century Literature
Gianluigi Rossini
Between , 2012,
Vittorio Coletti, Romanzo mondo. La letteratura nel villaggio globale
