Abstract: Present day cryogenic gas turbines are in more popular as they meet the growing need for low pressure cycles. This calls for improved methods of turbine wheel design. The present study is aimed at the design of the turbine wheel of mixed flow impellers with radial entry and axial discharge. In this paper, a computer code in detail has been developed for designing such turbine wheel. To determine the principal dimensions of the turbine wheel, optimum operating speed has been taken from design charts based on Similarity principles. The algorithm developed, allows any arbitrary combination of fluid properties, inlet conditions and expansion ratio, since the fluid properties are properly taken care of in the relevant equations. The computational process is illustrated with an example. The main dimensions, thermodynamic properties at different states, velocity and angles at entry and exit of the turbine wheel were worked out. The work may help the researchers for further design and development of cryogenic turboexpander depending on their operating parameters.
F-Wave Parameters of Normal Ulnar and Median Nerves

Abstract: Twenty healthy volunteers (17 males) aged 19–46 years(Mean 28±6.8) without any history of previous numbnessand pain in the hands or any other neurological disorderwere included in this study. The normal median nerve Fwaveparameters studied were: minimum latency24.8±1.7 ms; maximum latency 29.8±2.8 ms; meanlatency 26.8±1.4 ms; chronodispersion 5±2.8 ms; FMratio 2±1, manual and computerized persistence mode10. Persistence varied from 4 (40%) to 10 (100%)measured both manually and by computer.The normal ulnar nerve F-wave parameters studied were:minimum latency 24.5±1.7 ms; maximum latency28.2±1.8ms; mean latency 26.2±1.7 ms; chronodispersion3.6±1.4 ms; FM ratio 3±5.2, persistence (mode) 10.Persistence varied from 5 (50%) to 10 (100%) measuredboth manually and by computer.In both the median and ulnar nerves, difference betweenthe right and the left F-waves parameters values wereinsignificant. There was significant difference betweenmedian and ulnar nerve F-waves maximal latency,chronodispersion and mean latency ( t=3.28; p<0.05:t=2.92; p<0.05: t=2.42; p<0.05 respectively).In conclusion, it was observed that there was increasedmedian and ulnar nerves F-wave chronodispersions andsignificant difference was found between median andulnar nerves’ F-wave maximal latency, chronodispersionand mean latency in comparison to the previous studies.

Abstract: The boundary layer flow of a steady incompressible and visco-elastic fluid with short memory (obeying Walters’ B fluid model) passing over a hot vertical porous plate has been investigated in the presence of transverse magnetic field. The momentum and energy equations are reduced to couple non-linear partial differential equations along with the boundary conditions by using a suitable similarity transformation. These partial differential equations are transformed to a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations by employing a perturbation technique. The system is solved by developing a suitable numerical procedure such as implicit finite difference scheme along with Newton’s linearization method. The computational results for the flow quantities have presented graphically for the effects of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation, heat generation/absorption, visco-elasticity, Hartmann number and the permeability parameter. Results demonstrated that Prandtl number has more pronouncing effect on the temperature distribution rather than the viscosity parameter as well as the thermal radiation parameter. Further the velocity gradient changes significantly due to the presence of temperature dependent variable viscosity.

Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted to study the performance of fly ash based geopolymer mortar specimens inMagnesium Sulphate solution. Specimens were manufactured from low calcium fly ash by activation with a mixture of SodiumHydroxide and Sodium Silicate solution and cured thermally. 10% by weight Magnesium Sulphate solution was usedto soak the specimen up to 24 weeks. Performance of the specimens was evaluated in terms of visual appearance, variationof pH of solution, change in weight, and change in compressive strength over the exposure period. White deposits occurredon the surface of specimen which was initially soft but later converted to hard crystals. pH of solution increased noticeablyduring the initial weeks which indicate migration of alkalis from mortar specimens. At the end of 24 weeks samples experiencedvery little weight gain and recorded a loss of compressive strength by up to 56%.
Silymarin- A review on the Pharmacodynamics and Bioavailability Enhancement Approaches

Abstract: Silymarin, a flavonolignan from ‘milk thistle’ (Silybum marianum) plant is used from ancient times as a hepatoprotective drug. Along with hepatoprotective action other actions includes antioxidant, anti-lipid peroxidative, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and liver regenerating. Silymarin has clinical applications in alcoholic liver diseases, liver cirrhosis, Amanita mushroom poisoning, viral hepatitis, toxic and drug induced liver diseases, Psoriasis, and in Neuroprotective and neurotropic activity. Though silymarin doesnot have antiviral properties against hepatitis virus, it promotes protein synthesis, helps in regenerating liver tissue, controls inflammation, enhances glucoronidation and protects against glutathione depletion. The flavonoid silymarin and one of its structural components, silibinin, are substances with documentedhepatoprotective properties. They are proved to be a useful for hepatoprotection in hepatobiliary diseases and in hepatotoxicity due to drugs. The non traditional use of silymarin may make a breakthrough as a new approach to protect other organs in addition to liver. But the main drawback of silymarin is its poor solubility thereforedifferent approaches are been taken to enhance the solubility in turn the bioavailability of the drug. In this review we discuss about its Chemistry, Pharmacodynamics, safety, therapeutic efficacy and Bioavailability enhancement approaches used so far. As it is having a good safety profile, better patient tolerability and an effective drug at an affordable price, in near future new derivatives or new combinations of this drug may prove to be useful.

Abstract:

This paper presents a binary gravitational search algorithm (BGSA) is applied to solve the problem of optimal allotment of DG sets and Shunt capacitors in radial distribution systems. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained single-objective optimization problem where the total line loss (TLL) and the total voltage deviations (TVD) are to be minimized separately by incorporating optimal placement of DG units and shunt capacitors with constraints which include limits on voltage, sizes of installed capacitors and DG. This BGSA is applied on the balanced IEEE 10 Bus distribution network and the results are compared with conventional binary particle swarm optimization.

Population dynamics model for plasmid bearing and plasmid lacking cells for streptokinase production in continuous flow stirred tank bioreactor

Abstract: Streptokinase production in bioreactor is well associated to cell population dynamics. It is an established fact that two types of cell populations are found to emerge from the initial pool of recombinant cell population. This phenomenon leads to an undesired loss in yield of the product. Primary metabolites, like acetic acid etc are formed as by-product of metabolism, has its influential role in regulating the competitive and inhibitory dynamics. Metabolites are found to play a crucial role since their threshold amount is assumed to promote the formation of plasmid lacking cells. On the other hand probability of plasmid loss has shown to follow a variable trend in the model dynamics. In this study a process model with coupled differential equations is designed to reveal the interaction among various parameters.
