An epidemiologic clinical and pathological study of basal cell epithelioma (BCE) in Razi Dermatological Hospital

Abstract: Our purpose was demographic clinical and pathological aspect of BCE in patients seen in Razi Hospital, during a six-month period (75.8.12 to 76.2.12). Results: From the total 20000 patients, 103 cases of BCE were detected. (0.5%). The male female ratio was 1.71 BCE was more frequent in sixth decade. 40.8% of patients were fair skin (Type II), 54.4% tawny (Type III) and 4.9% brown (Type IV, V). 15.5% of patients had a past history of freckles and history of radiotherapy in childhood was present in 41.7% 89.3% had no history of acne and seborrhea. The scalp was the most common site of BCE. The most common clinical type was nodular BCE and solid BCE was the dominant histological feature. Conclusion: BCE was more common in male and fair skin patients with dry skin. In those having history of radiotherapy of the scalp, lesions were seen mostly on the scalp, forehead and neck: pigmented BCE was predominant in this group.
Hand eczema and related factors in patients referred to Razi Hospital, Spring, 1376

Abstract: Introduction: Hand eczema is one of the most common causes of disabiliting dermatoses. Objective: Our purpose was to determine the frequency of hand eczema in out patients seen in Razi hospital (university medical center). Design: Of 3754 patients with skin problems, 206 were investigated for hand eczema and the study was carried out with regard to age, sex, occupation, exposure to chemical and physical irritants and predispositional factors. Results: The prevalence of hand eczema was 5.48%. The mean age was 30.8 years. The female: male ratio was 1.6. The highest number of patients were in the occupational group with exposure to reegents and water (we couldn't do patch test because it was not available). The most common complaint was itching (85.5%) and the fingers were the predominant affected sites. Conclusion: The major cause of hand eczema in contact dermatitis (Irritant and Allergic) and patch testing in necessary to determine the allergic agent, that can be helpful in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) but are sometimes discouraged because of high false-positive rate and also in many instances, simultaneous exposure to irritant factors plays an essential role in the development of ACD.
Description of Some Dermatoscopic Features of Acral Pigmented Lesions in Iranian Patients: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: "nProper differentiation between acral malignant melanoma and benign pigmented lesions like melanocytic nevi is of great value. To avoid unnecessary biopsies, dermatoscopy has been introduced as a non-invasive modality and has improved the clinical diagnostic accuracy in recent decades. We aimed to describe dermoscopic patterns of acral pigmented lesions of patients in the clinic of dermatology in Razi Hospital, Tehran, Iran. This study was conducted as a descriptional study among a total of 62 pigmented lesions located on volar skin of palms and soles. After initial clinical evaluation, lesions were examined entirely by dermoscopy. All the patterns within a lesion were described, and lesions suspicious of malignancy (clinically or dermatoscopically) were selected for histopathological evaluation. Of our 62 lesions, three lesions were not melanocytic. According to our final clinicopathological diagnosis, 47 lesions were benign melanocytic nevi and 12 lesions were malignant melanoma. Parallel furrow pattern was the most frequent among our benign lesions (51.1%) followed by lattice-like pattern (23.4%) and acral reticular pattern (21.3%). Diffuse multi-component pattern, parallel ridge pattern and abrupt edge were respectively most common patterns among malignant melanomas. Acral benign melanocytic nevi and malignant melanomas respectively have well distinctive characteristics in dermatoscopy among our patients.
Assessment of Resistance in Sugarbeet Lines to Damping-Off Caused by Pythium ultimum Trow var. ultimum Under Greenhouse Conditions

Abstract: To evaluate the resistance in seedlings of 20 sugarbeet lines against two isolates of P. ultimum var. ultimum under greenhouse conditions, seeds were sown in sterilized soil treated with certain amounts of P. ultimum inoculum. Seeds of the line Rhizofort had already been treated with a fungicidal substance containing iprodion and hymexazol. The resulting seedlings were evaluated 3 week after sowing date. A zero to five rating system was applied to assess different levels of resistance. As a result of this evaluation, 16 lines were grouped as very susceptible and susceptible. The remaining 4 lines including 9597-P.58, 8150-Bulk, Mst231 and MstC2 appeared to be resistant to the infection. Also the line Rhizofort was grouped as the resistant because of its healthy appearance which might be due to the fungicidal treatment of the seeds. Results from this experiment revealed that the efficacy of resistance in the lines against damping-off, was more than the fungicidal treatment of the seeds.
The Effects of Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Oilseed Rape on the Production and Quality of Extracted Oil

Abstract: Rape seed (Brassica napus L.) containing more than 40 per cent oil is one of the best oilseeds for cultivation in Iran. Sclerotinia stem rot is one of the important diseases of the rape seed, the causal agent being Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of the disease on the quantity and quality of the extracted oil and remaining foodstuff in a field experiment. In this research three cultivars including Okapi, SLM046 and Talayeh were examined under field conditions using a factorial design (cultivars and inoculations were two factors under study). The cultivars were inoculated with SK4 isolate of S. sclerotiorum. The inoculation was done on the plant stems at 30 cm height above the soil using Lewartosca method during mid flowering stage. One thousand- seed weight and glucosinolate, erucic and oleic fatty acids contents of the seeds were determind after the harvest. The results indicated that the infected plants in comparision with the controls had a lower 1000- seed weight and oleic acid content and a higher glucosinolates and erucic acid contents. There were significant differences among the genotypes in respect to all the studied traits except 1000- seed weight. Inverse correlation was observed between 1000- seed weight and erucic acid content or oil glucosinolates contents. It was concluded that the disease can reduce quantity and quality of seed oil and other nutrient contents.
Computer-aided dermoscopy for diagnosis of melanoma

Abstract: We studied 122 pigmented skin lesions which were referred for diagnostic evaluation or cosmetic reasons. Each lesion was examined by two clinicians with naked eyes and all of their clinical diagnostic considerations were recorded. The lesions were analyzed using a microDERM? dermoscopy unit. The output value of the software for each lesion was a score between 0 and 10. All of the lesions were excised and examined histologically.Histopathological examination revealed melanoma in six lesions. Considering only the most likely clinical diagnosis, sensitivity and specificity of clinical examination for diagnosis of melanoma were 83% and 96%, respectively. Considering all clinical diagnostic considerations, the sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 89%. Choosing a cut-off point of 7.88 for dermoscopy score, the sensitivity and specificity of the score for diagnosis of melanoma were 83% and 96%, respectively. Setting the cut-off point at 7.34, the sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 90%.The diagnostic accuracy of the dermoscopy system was at the level of clinical examination by dermatologists with naked eyes. This system may represent a useful tool for screening of melanoma, particularly at centers not experienced in the field of pigmented skin lesions.The incidence of melanoma is much lower in Asia than in western countries [1]. Euler-Lagrange Elasticity: Differential Equations for Elasticity without Stress or Strain  [PDF]

Differential equations to describe elasticity are derived without the use of stress or strain. The points within the body are the independent parameters instead of strain and surface forces replace stress tensors. These differential equations are a continuous analytical model that can then be solved using any of the standard techniques of differential equations. Although the equations do not require the definition stress or strain, these quantities can be calculated as dependent parameters. This approach to elasticity is simple, which avoids the need for multiple definitions of stress and strain, and provides a simple experimental procedure to find scalar representations of material properties in terms of the energy of deformation. The derived differential equations describe both infinitesimal and finite deformations.

Abstract: The equations of Euler-Lagrange elasticity describe elastic deformations without reference to stress or strain. These equations as previously published are applicable only to quasi-static deformations. This paper extends these equations to include time dependent deformations. To accomplish this, an appropriate Lagrangian is defined and an extrema of the integral of this Lagrangian over the original material volume and time is found. The result is a set of Euler equations for the dynamics of elastic materials without stress or strain, which are appropriate for both finite and infinitesimal deformations of both isotropic and anisotropic materials. Finally, the resulting equations are shown to be no more than Newton's Laws applied to each infinitesimal volume of the material.

Abstract: Linear algebra provides insights into the description of elasticity without stress or strain. Classical descriptions of elasticity usually begin with defining stress and strain and the constitutive equations of the material that relate these to each other. Elasticity without stress or strain begins with the positions of the points and the energy of deformation. The energy of deformation as a function of the positions of the points within the material provides the material properties for the model. A discrete or continuous model of the deformation can be constructed by minimizing the total energy of deformation. As presented, this approach is limited to hyper-elastic materials, but is appropriate for infinitesimal and finite deformations, isotropic and anisotropic materials, as well as quasi-static and dynamic responses.
