Saramaccan, a very mixed language: Systematicity in the distribution of function words?

Linguística : Revista de Estudos Linguísticos da Universidade do Porto , 2012,
Abstract: Saramaccan is the descendant of a mixed creole language formerly spoken on Portuguese Jewish-owned plantations in Surinam, South America. Its mixed nature reveals itself in roughly equal numbers of monomorphemic English-derived and Portuguese-derived lexical items. In terms of function words, however, English-derived function words dominate to the proportion of 4:1. This still leaves us with a significant number of Portuguese function words. Here I make a preliminary study of spatial adpositions and question words. This reveals a strong correlation between words referring to “place” and words derived from Portuguese.I take account of the presence of Jewish-owned plantations and large-scale marronnage towards the end of the 17th century, the latter leading to formation of the Saramaccan tribe

Moral perfectionism and democratic responsiveness: reading Cavell with Foucault
Aletta J. Norval
Ethics & Global Politics , 2011, DOI: 10.3402/egp.v4i4.14448
Abstract: Starting from existing interpretations of Cavell's account of moral perfectionism, this article seeks to elaborate an account of democratic responsiveness that foregrounds notions of ‘turning’ and ‘manifesting for another’. In contrast to readings of Cavell that privilege reason-giving, the article draws on the writings of Cavell as well as on Foucault's work on parrēsia to elaborate a grammar of responsiveness that is attentive to a wider range of practices, forms of embodiment and modes of subjectivity. The article suggests that a focus on the notions of ‘turning’ and ‘manifesting for another’ is crucial if we are to account for the processes through which political imagination is opened up so as to bring about novel ways of being and acting. The arguments are illustrated with reference to recent events in the Arab Spring as well as to the politics of redress in a post-transitional social movement, Khulumani.
Ventricular perforation as a complication of percutaneous valve replacement
C de Jager, IL Norval, JR Tynan
South African Journal of Radiology , 2012,
Abstract: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most commonly encountered valvular disease in developed countries. Once symptomatic, this disease carries a dismal prognosis. Patients unfit for surgical valve replacement may require transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI). We present a complication of this novel approach where a prosthetic valve is delivered through the femoral artery by means of a Retroflex delivery system developed by Edwards Lifesciences.
Cianorte’s Green Belt Agreement: photography’s usage as denouncing tool “Acordo do Cintur o Verde de Cianorte”: o uso da fotografia como fator de denúncia

Discursos Fotográficos , 2010,
Abstract: This paper corresponds to a sample from a master’s degree dissertation titled “Duel of words and images: Cianorte’s Geen Belt agreement and press coverage of local and state newspapers”, presented at PUC/SP in 2010. It concerns the use of photography as social prosecution factor handled by groups in opposition to the “agreement”. In that context, general media and photography have become crucial to draw attention to – and change the course of – a negotiation process that, in exchange for the donation of a green area in Cianorte, allowed deforestation and subdivision in plots of another part of this area, culminating in damage for the region’s environment and biodiversity.
Possibility of an ultra-precise optical clock using the $6 ^1S_0 \to 6 ^3P^o_0$ transition in $^{171, 173}$Yb atoms held in an optical lattice

Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.69.021403
Abstract: We report calculations designed to assess the ultimate precision of an atomic clock based on the 578 nm $6 ^1S_0 --> 6 ^3P^o_0$ transition in Yb atoms confined in an optical lattice trap. We find that this transition has a natural linewidth less than 10 mHz in the odd Yb isotopes, caused by hyperfine coupling. The shift in this transition due to the trapping light acting through the lowest order AC polarizability is found to become zero at the magic trap wavelength of about 752 nm. The effects of Rayleigh scattering, higher-order polarizabilities, vector polarizability, and hyperfine induced electronic magnetic moments can all be held below a mHz (about a part in 10^{18}), except in the case of the hyperpolarizability larger shifts due to nearly resonant terms cannot be ruled out without an accurate measurement of the magic wavelength.
Bleomycin toxicity post injection into craniopharyngioma
Ivan L Norval, Jennifer R Tynan, Evan M Frangou
South African Journal of Radiology , 2012,
Abstract: Craniopharyngioma is a common suprasellar mass that is frequently encountered in radiology. These tumours are difficult to treat, with a combination of resection and radiation therapy having been the gold standard. Our case highlights a complication of a newer approach to treatment in which bleomycin is administered into the tumour via a catheter, usually an Ommaya reservoir that is surgically placed.
