Universitas Psychologica , 2012,
Abstract: This study investigates the characteristics of the specific memory factors (processes and content) that are associated to the Gsm from the CHC model. Memory tasks with different content, including various aptitude tests and a general intelligence test, were administered to a sample of university students. Two models that relate the general Gsm aptitude, with working memory and memory span, and with verbal-numerical and visual-spatial aptitudes were test- ed. Results indicate good fit indices for both models tested, as well as evidence for a positive regression between Gsm and working memory and between Gsm and visuospatial content. In both models we observed standardized regression of 0.54 and of 0.73 between Gsm and factor g. Implications for the understanding of the relation between memory and intelligence are discussed.
Visualiza??o espacial, raciocínio indutivo e rendimento acadêmico em desenho técnico
Prieto, Gerardo;Velasco, Angela Dias;
Psicologia Escolar e Educacional , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-85572006000100002
Abstract: the difficulties of first-year engineering students toward learning technical drawing are related with the aptitude level. in order to effectively plan the didactic process, it is necessary to detect early those students who require more attention and support. this study describes the utility of a visualization test and a reasoning test to predicting academic achievement in technical drawing. both tests were applied to a sample of 484 brazilian engineering students. the data were analised by the rasch model. the results suggest that visualization is the best predictor.

Psicologia Escolar e Educacional , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-85572008000200002
Abstract: this work describes the construction, application and results obtained with a battery of computerized exercises for training spatial visualization in engineering students. the battery contains four exercises based on very common tasks in the basic teaching of technical drawing. each exercise is composed of 18 items with four options to answer from, only one of which is correct. after answering each item, the student receives immediate feedback of whether the answer is right or wrong. the response format of the exercises is called "answer-until-correct," because if the answer the student gives is incorrect, he or she must keep on seeking the right answer. when the test is over, the student receives information on the score obtained. to assess the effectiveness of the training in spatial visualization, tests in this ability, scaled in the same metrics, were administered at the beginning and end of a technical drawing course. the figures of the exercises and tests were constructed with autocad and programming was carried out with revolution studio 2. two models were used to obtain the measures: the partial credit model [1] and the rasch model [2]. it was observed that, on average, the students' improvement in spatial visualization was moderate.

Abstract: introduction: oropharyngeal candidiasis is an early marker of progression to aids in hiv-positive patients and an indicator of non-adherence of treatment or possible failure in patients undergoing anti-retroviral therapy. objective: to determine the in vitro susceptibility to nystatin in candida strains isolated from the oral cavity of hiv-positive patients, and to correlate the results with the response to treatment. methods: a study of in vitro susceptibility to nystatin was conducted in 104 oral isolates from 97 hiv/aids patients, who participated as volunteers in a clinical trial to evaluate the response to four antifungal drugs. fifty-eight of the 104 isolates were obtained before starting treatment and the remaining 46 at the end of therapy. broth microdilution method was performed according to the document m27-a3 of the clinical and laboratory standards institute. results: one hundred percent of the strains were susceptible to nystatin, with minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) values of <16 μg/ml, regardless of the time of isolation and of the drug administered to patients. in the group of patients treated with nystatin, the mic80 ranges (1-2 μg/ml), geometric mean and cumulative values of the drug against candida albicans isolates before starting treatment were similar to those obtained against strains recovered at the end. among the identified species, c. lusitaniae reached the highest absolute mic value (4 μg/ml). conclusions: the correlation between the clinical evolution and the results of in vitro susceptibility tests was good in patients with a favorable outcome; however, it did not allow predicting possible treatment failure.

Abstract: a prospective study to identify clinical and mycological aspects of oral candidiasis including a therapeutic trial for 4 drugs-2 topical (chlotrimazole and nistatine) and 2 systemic (itraconale and ketoconazole) was performed on 97 hiv adult patients from march 2003 to june 2004. average age was 34,97 years, being males and heterosexual behaviour predominant. the pseudomembranous clinical form of presentation prevailed in 93.8% of cases, with accompanying symptoms like pain, burning sensation and difficult swallowing in addition to extensive lesions. candida albicans was the most frequently isolated species both in swabs taken at the beginning (92%) and at the end of the treatment schedules applied to patients who did not succeed in mycological cure (89.4%). treatment schemes had positive results from the clinical viewpoint in 91.8% of cases with improvement or total remission of symptoms and signs, and in 51.6% of mycological curing. there were no statistically significant differences of clinical and mycological responses between topical and systemic treatments. the above-mentioned allowed recommending a more extensive use of local treatment in the studied population because of their benefits for the patients.
