Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the performance in Chess and in Mathematics of the college players in Cabanatuan City, Philippines. Specif-ically, it aimed to determine the respondents’ mathematics and chess per-formances, their playing styles and their beliefs regarding chess players and mathematicians. The descriptive correlational research design was utilized in this study and the data gathered by the researcher were tallied and tabulated using frequency, percentage, mean and Pearson’s r. Furthermore, open-ended questions were used to solicit remarks/comments from the respondents regarding the role of chess in enhancing their thinking skills. It was found out that the general weighted average (GWA) in Mathematics of the respondents was above average. Most of them are barangay/school level champions. Males are tactician type of players while females are positional players. A respondent who performed better in higher chess competition also performed better or obtained higher GWA in Mathematics. Furthermore, the respondents believed that a chess player can be a good mathematician especially if they start playing early in life and if chess was a part of the school curriculum since playing chess continuously has helped them in developing and improving their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Abstract: This research paper evaluated and investigated the effectiveness of the comprehensible technique (CT) introduced by the researcher as an alternative solution to Algebra’s linear equations in solving consecutive number problems. The CT is a proposed easy and efficient way of solving number problems which aimed to help the learners reduce their difficulties in using variables since the technique only uses basic arithmetic and mental Mathematics. Evaluation research was utilized in this study where 20 people, from various ages and professions, were chosen purposively as respondents of the study. The study found out that CT was very effective for the respondents especially in unlocking difficulties in solving consecutive number problems. Moreover, according to them, the CT is easy to use, it is engaging and enjoyable, direct and simple and can be utilized as shortcut way of solving consecutive number problems when competing in Math quiz bees or taking board examinations where time is of the essence.

Abstract: It is a well-known fact that quality of environment in urban habitats has deteriorated throughout the world over time and the down-slide still continues. It is a matter of great concern as it affects human well-being and health. This problem under the general umbrella of quality of life studies has been examined from different angles. At the centre stage in this paper it is the quality of environment from a human perspective to inform the policy makers about the hiatus between objective (empirical) and perceived quality of environment [QOE]. Indeed, some qualitative studies are successful in finding out deeper issues in respect of environmental degradation of urban habitats which should be brought to the notice of urban planners and designers. However, studies carried out in environmental psychology, in many cases, have failed to philosophical underpinnings and appropriateness of methodology. They are unable in theorising the quality of the urban environment to the satisfaction of critical evaluation. The present paper is a humble attempt to critically evaluate the objective and perceptual approaches and methodologies to understand and evaluate quality of the urban environment. In the process, their philosophical foundations are also subjected to critical evaluation to conclude which one of the two approaches better informs policy makers concerned with urban development and renewal programmes.

Abstract: the soil tillage and the vegetable species have expressive effect on spatial variability of soil. the objective of this work was to study the spatial variability of some physical attributes of savannah soil (oxisol) of mato grosso do sul, brazil, under different management. the soil samples were collected in a grid, with regular intervals of 2.0 m, total of 64 points, in the depths of 0-0.10 m and 0.10-0.20 m for bulk density and in the depths 0-0.15 m; 0.15-0.30 m; 0.30-0.45 m and 0.45-0.60 m for the soil resistance to the penetration and soil water content, in the areas with native vegetation (savannah), no-tillage, conventional system and pasture. the greatest variability measured through the variation coefficient and nugget effect was observed for the soil resistance to penetration. the no-tillage showed major range when compared to native vegetation, conventional system and pasture. the uses and managements induce, in the crescent order of no-tillage, conventional system and pasture towards degradation of soil physical attributes in relation to native vegetation.
Modifications induced by adding natural zeolitic pozzolans to cement paste

Abstract: Volcanic pozzolans owe their pozzolanic activity chiefly to the presence of vitreous or zeolitic material rich in SiO2, and Al20y compounds that react with the portlandite produced during cement hydration to generate amorphous gels with cementitious properties. The present study analyzes the modifications taking place in the composition, structure and micro structure of the hydra ted cement paste when 20% of the cement by weight is replaced by two finely ground zeolitic rocks from Cuban deposits. Hydrated cement pastes were prepared with a CEM I35 cement, as well as with mixes of the cement and two Cuban zeolitic rocks (20% by weight). After eight months of hydration, the pastes were characterized -mineralogically, chemically and microstructurally- with XRD, FTIR, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, DTA/TG, back scattered electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry techniques. The replacement of 20% by weight of the cement with two finely ground zeolitic rocks significantly modified the composition, structure, quantity and microstructure of the hydrated cement paste reaction product. The C-S-H gel formed in these pastes differed in quantity, which was larger, and composition from the original cement gel. Moreover, the gel formed in addition-free cement had a higher Ca and a lower Al content and shorter silicate chains than the C-S-H product formed in the pastes made with zeolitic rocks. Finally, the pastes with pozzolan additions had fewer and smaller pores. La actividad de las puzolanas de origen volcánico procede fundamentalmente de la presencia de material vitreo o zeolítico rico en SiO2 y Al2Oy que son los que reaccionan con la portlandita producida en la hidratación del cemento generando geles amorfos con propiedades cementantes. El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar las modificaciones que produce la sustitución del 20% en peso de cemento por dos rocas zeolíticas cubanas finamente molidas, en la composición, estructura y microestructura de la pasta de cemento hidratada. Se prepararon tres pastas de cemento hidratadas elaboradas con un cemento CEM I 35 y con la mezcla de dicho cemento con dos rocas zeolíticas cubanas (al 20% en peso). A los ocho meses de hidratación las pastas se caracterizaron mineralógica, química y microestructuralmente a través de DRX, FTIR,29Si y 27Al MAS NMR, ATD/TG, microscopía electrónica de electrones retrodispersados y porosimetría de mercurio. Abstract: Los centros de educación superior han trabajado en función de promover la cultura y fundamentalmente la cultura médica que es la que crea y preserva la Universidad Médica. Por ello se exponen las experiencias de 6 a os de trabajo en los centros de Ciencias Médicas en las actividades relacionadas con la Extensión Universitaria. Se destaca la importancia de la participación de estudiantes, profesores y trabajadores, no solo en la institución sino también en todas las áreas docentes asistenciales tanto en las especialidades de Medicina como en Licenciatura en Enfermería. En cuyo trabajo se precisan las vías, teniendo en cuenta la participación de comités horizontales, para una correcta planeación de las acciones de extensión así como la importancia de las mismas en relación con la formación multifacética de futuro egresado en ambas especialidades. Se se alan los aspectos sobre los cuales se debe seguir trabajando para alcanzar mejores resultados. Se enfatiza la importancia del proyecto educativo. High Education Centers have worked in order to promote culture, mainly medical culture, the one that creates and preserves Medical University. Experiences related to the Department of Extracurricular Activities were recorded during 6 years of work in Medical Sciences Institutions. Participations of students, professors, workers were not only in the institutions but also in all teaching activities and in tasks developed in medical and nursing specialties are remarked. Ways of planning the actions of extracurricular activities are established taking into account the performance of the year committees, as well as its significance in all_round education of the future doctors and nurses. Aspects related to the aim of obtaining a better work are pointed out, and pertinence of Educative Project is emphasized.
Versión corta de la adaptación espa ola para adolescentes del NEO-PI-R (JS NEO-S)

Abstract: Este artículo instrumental presenta los primeros datos sobre el desarrollo de la versión corta de la adaptación espa ola para adolescentes, entre 12 y 18 a os, del NEO-PI-R (JS NEO-S). Este cuestionario de 150 ítems evalúa las cinco dimensiones y las treinta facetas del Modelo de los Cinco Factores. Las propiedades psicométricas del JS NEO-S fueron investigadas en una muestra de 2.546 adolescentes. Los resultados replicaron la estructura factorial de la versión extensa (JS NEO). Las fiabilidades de consistencia interna y estabilidad temporal de las escalas, en intervalos de un mes y un a o, fueron adecuadas. Además, la correlación entre las escalas de la versión corta para adolescentes y la versión para adultos, NEO-PI-R, indicaban un alto grado de equivalencia entre las dos formas. Asimismo, se estudió la asociación del JS NEO con el BFQ-NA que evalúa los cinco factores a nivel de las dimensiones, ya que no tiene subescalas para las facetas. Las correlaciones entre estos cuestionarios aportaron más evidencia sobre la validez de constructo de JS NEO-S.

Abstract: an assessment of the curricular design of the public health syllabus as a discipline that is taught in the 5th year of the medical career is made, taking into account the experiences of the application of the new syllabus of the public health training since 1996 in the medical faculty of pinar del río. the curricular design models closer to the cuban medical higher education syllabuses were used. it is concluded that the final profile of our medical graduates (basic general doctor) and the tribute to the comprehensive general discipline (comprehensive general medicine) were considered for its formulation, allowing the development of practical abilities in the community with a modular organization and the utilization of the problem method as a teaching way. it is suggested that the method of evaluation of the analysis of the health status shoul be improved to atain a higher creative and investigative performance of the students. this can be materialized by using the flexibility facilitated by the program. the systematicity in the functioning of the subject collectives and the horizontal and vertical committees guarantee the fulfillment of the proposed goals.

Abstract: Se refleja una valoración del Dise o Curricular del programa de Salud Pública como disciplina que se imparte en el 5to. a o de la carrera de Medicina, teniendo como base las experiencias de la aplicación del nuevo programa de la estancia de Salud Pública desde 1996 en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de Pinar del Río. Se considera que para su elaboración se tomaron los modelos de dise o curricular que más se acercan a los planes de estudio de la Educación Médica Superior Cubana. Se concluye que para su formulación se tuvo en cuenta el perfil de salida de nuestro egresado de Ciencias Médicas (Médico General Básico), y el tributo a la disciplina general integradora (Medicina General Integral), permitiendo el desarrollo de habilidades prácticas en la comunidad, con una organización modular y la utilización del método problémico como forma de ense anza. Se sugiere que el método de evaluación del análisis de la situación de salud debe perfeccionarse para lograr un mayor desempe o creativo e investigativo del educando, lo cual puede materializarse utilizando la flexibilidad que facilita el programa. La sistematicidad en el funcionamiento de los colectivos de asignatura y los Comités Horizontales y Verticales garantizarán el cumplimiento de los objetivos propuestos.
