Description of three new genera and four new species of Neanastatinae (Hymenoptera, Eupelmidae) from Baltic amber, with discussion of their relationships to extant taxa

Abstract: Aspidopleura baltica gen. n. and sp. n., Brevivulva electroma gen. n. and sp. n., Neanaperiallus masneri gen. n. and sp. n., and Metapelma archetypon sp. n. are described in Neanastatinae (Chalcidoidea, Eupelmidae) from Baltic amber. New information is given on the morphology of Eopelma Gibson, Lambdobregma Gibson, Metapelma Westwood and Neanastatus Girault, the four extant genera previously classified in Neanastatinae, and the extinct and extant taxa are compared with other Chalcidoidea for hypotheses of character evolution and phylogenetic relationships. Structural features of Neanaperiallus and Aspidopleura indicate that except for a greatly enlarged acropleuron the groundplan structure of Neanastatinae was similar to male Eupelminae or some Cleonyminae (Pteromalidae). Furthermore, classification of Neanaperiallus in Neanastatinae results in no putative autapomorphies to support monophyly of the subfamily. Some features of Encyrtidae, Tanaostigmatidae and Neanastatinae suggest that the taxa may have had a common ancestor, therefore rendering Eupelmidae paraphyletic. A key to the seven recognized genera and a revised diagnosis of Neanastatinae are given.
The extinct Baltic amber genus Propelma Trjapitzin, a valid genus of Neanastatinae (Hymenoptera, Eupelmidae)

Abstract: The extinct Eocene Baltic amber genus Propelma Trjapitzin 1963 is removed from synonymy under Eupelmus Dalman 1820 (Hymenoptera, Eupelmidae, Eupelminae) and treated as a valid genus within Neanastatinae Kalina 1984 based on examination of the holotype female of P. rohdendorfi Trjapitzin. Propelma rohdendorfi is redescribed, illustrated by photomacrographs, and compared to other described extant and extinct genera of Neanastatinae. Taxonomic, morphological and geological diversity of Neanastatinae relative to Eupelminae and Calosotinae is also discussed relative to potential age of the subfamily.
Calosota Curtis (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eupelmidae) – review of the New World and European fauna including revision of species from the West Indies and Central and North America

Abstract: Two of three species previously classified in Calosota Curtis (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) from the Neotropical region are transferred to Eupelminae. Calosota eneubulus (Walker) from Galapagos Islands is transferred to Eupelmus Dalman as Eupelmus (Eupelmus) eneubulus (Walker), comb. n., and Calosota silvai (Brèthes) from Chile is transferred to Brasema Cameron as Brasema silvai comb. n. Calosota cecidobius (Kieffer) from Argentina is retained in Calosota, with reservation, as an unrecognized species. The species of Calosota from the New World excluding South America are revised. Eleven species are recognized, including the seven newly described species Calosota albipalpus sp. n. (Costa Rica, Mexico, USA, Venezuela), Calosota bicolorata sp. n. (USA), Calosota elongata sp. n. (USA), Calosota longivena sp. n. (USA), Calosota panamaensis sp. n. (Panama), Calosota setosa sp. n. (Bahamas, Dominican Republic, USA), and Calosota speculifrons sp. n. (Costa Rica, USA). The 11 regional species and the Palaearctic species Calosota vernalis Curtis are keyed and illustrated. Calosota vernalis is not known to occur in the New World but is included in the key and diagnosed because it has been intercepted in quarantine in Canada. Calosota pseudotsugae Burks is placed in synonymy under Calosota acron (Walker), syn. n., and Calosota kentra Burks, Calosota montana Burks and Calosota septentrionalis Hedqvist are placed in synonymy under Calosota aestivalis Curtis syn. n. Calosota modesta Bolívar y Pieltain is removed from synonymy under Calosota viridis Masi, stat. rev., and Calosota viridis, Calosota matritensis Bolívar y Pieltain, and Calosota coerulea Nikol’skaya are placed in synonymy under Calosota metallica (Gahan), syn. n. Calosota grylli Erd s is confirmed as a separate species from Calosota metallica based on features of both sexes. It is suggested that Calosota ariasi Bolívar y Pieltain may be a synonym of Calosota aestivalis, Calosota bolivari Askew may be a synonym of Calosota agrili Nikol’skaya, Calosota dusmeti Bolívar y Pieltain may be a synonym of Calosota violascens Masi, and Calosota lixobia Erd s likely is not a junior synonym of Calosota obscura Ruschka, but formal nomenclatural changes are not proposed prior to a comprehensive Palaearctic revision. Previous interpretation of the mesoscutum in Calosota and Balcha Walker is also modified to include the presence of anteroadmedian lines in addition to notauli and parapsidal lines.
Hymenopteran parasitoids of the ant-eating spider Zodarion styliferum (Simon) (Araneae, Zodariidae)

Abstract: Calymmochilus dispar Bou ek & Andriescu (Hymenoptera, Eupelmidae) and Gelis apterus (Pontoppidan) (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) are newly recorded as parasitoids of the ant-eating spider Zodarion styliferum (Simon) (Araneae, Zodariidae). The larvae of both parasitoid species fed on juvenile spiders. The final instar larva and pupa of C. dispar and the male of G. apterus are described for the first time. Both species represent new distribution records for Portugal. The biology and host associations of the parasitoids are discussed.

Abstract: Der vorliegende Artikel arbeitet methodologische Probleme heraus, die entstehen, wenn bei der Analyse von schriftlichen, asynchronen Online-Diskussionen "Kultur" und "Interkulturalit t" als interaktiv darstellbare und beobachtbare Ph nomene behandelt werden. Insbesondere wird untersucht, wie die Konversationsanalyse mit ihrem Fokus auf Sequenzialit t und das Konzept der Zugeh rigkeitskategorisierungen die Analyse von Kultur als verschriftlichte, interaktive Leistung unterstützen k nnte. Im Beitrag wird dargelegt, dass trotz der offensichtlichen Unterschiede zwischen sequenziellen mündlichen Gespr chen und verschriftlichten Online-Diskussionen durch die Konversationsanalyse interessante Methoden bereitgestellt werden, um Online-Diskussionen zu analysieren. Die beiden Aspekte der Sequenzialit t und der Zugeh rigkeitskategorien sind dabei hilfreich, um anhand von Verschriftlichungen in Online-Foren die Konstruktion sichtbarer und als solche erkennbare, interkulturelle Diskurspraktiken nachzuzeichnen. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0901493 This paper works through the methodological issues involved in treating "culture" and "interculturality" as interactionally demonstrable and observable phenomena in written online asynchronous discourse. In particular, the paper explores the ways that conversation analysis (CA) and its focus on sequentiality and membership categorization analysis might aid the analysis of culture as a textural interactional achievement. The paper argues that, while there are some clear differences between sequential talk and written asynchronous discourse, there are still interesting ways in which CA's analytic foci may be worked through in relation to online discourse. Both the concern with sequentiality and with membership categories may well help us to see how the construction of visible and recognizable intercultural discourse practices are accomplished through written modes in online forums. The Spectroscopic Age of 47 Tuc

Abstract: High signal-to-noise integrated spectra of the metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tuc, spanning the H-gamma(HR) and Fe4668 line indices, have been obtained. The combination of these indices has been suggested (Jones & Worthey 1995, ApJ, 446, L31) as the best available mechanism for cleanly separating the age-metallicity degeneracy which hampers the dating of distant, unresolved, elliptical galaxies. For the first time, we apply this technique to a nearby spheroidal system, 47 Tuc, for which independent ages, based upon more established methods, exist. Such an independent test of the technique's suitability has not been attempted before, but is an essential one before its application to more distant, unresolved, stellar populations can be considered valid. Because of its weak series of Balmer lines, relative to model spectra, our results imply a spectroscopic ``age'' for 47 Tuc well in excess of 20 Gyr, at odds with the colour-magnitude diagram age of 14+/-1 Gyr. The derived metal abundance, however, is consistent with the known value. Emission ``fill-in'' of the H-gamma line as the source of the discrepancy cannot be entirely excluded by existing data, although the observational constraints are restrictive.
Local Temperature Redistribution and Structural Transition During Joule-Heating-Driven Conductance Switching in VO2

Abstract: Joule-heating induced conductance-switching is studied in VO2, a Mott insulator. Complementary in-situ techniques including optical characterization, blackbody microscopy, scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) and numerical simulations are used. Abrupt redistribution in local temperature is shown to occur upon conductance-switching along with a structural phase transition, at the same current.
Arsenal of plant cell wall degrading enzymes reflects host preference among plant pathogenic fungi

Abstract: Large-scale screening identified a range of hydrolytic activities among 348 unique isolates representing 156 species of plant pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi. Hierarchical clustering was used to identify groups of species with similar hydrolytic profiles. Among moderately and highly active species, plant pathogenic species were found to be more active than non-pathogens on six of eight substrates tested, with no significant difference seen on the other two substrates. Among the pathogenic fungi, greater hydrolysis was seen when they were tested on biomass and hemicellulose derived from their host plants (commelinoid monocot or dicot). Although T. reesei has a hydrolytic profile that is highly active on cellulose and pretreated biomass, it was less active than some natural isolates of fungi when tested on xylans and untreated biomass.Several highly active isolates of plant pathogenic fungi were identified, particularly when tested on xylans and untreated biomass. There were statistically significant preferences for biomass type reflecting the monocot or dicot host preference of the pathogen tested. These highly active fungi are promising targets for identification and characterization of novel cell wall degrading enzymes for industrial applications.The recalcitrance of lignocellulose to enzymatic degradation and the high cost of hydrolytic enzymes required for depolymerization of polysaccharides found in the plant cell wall are significant barriers to the large-scale production and commercialization of biofuels and bioproducts derived from plant biomass [1]. Abstract: ABM development followed a sequence starting with relatively direct translation from in-vitro derived rules into a cell-as-agent level ABM, leading on to concatenated ABMs into multi-tissue models, eventually resulting in topologically linked aggregate multi-tissue ABMs modeling organ-organ crosstalk. As an underlying design principle organs were considered to be functionally composed of an epithelial surface, which determined organ integrity, and an endothelial/blood interface, representing the reaction surface for the initiation and propagation of inflammation. The development of the epithelial ABM derived from an in-vitro model of gut epithelial permeability is described. Next, the epithelial ABM was concatenated with the endothelial/inflammatory cell ABM to produce an organ model of the gut. This model was validated against in-vivo models of the inflammatory response of the gut to ischemia. Finally, the gut ABM was linked to a similarly constructed pulmonary ABM to simulate the gut-pulmonary axis in the pathogenesis of multiple organ failure. The behavior of this model was validated against in-vivo and clinical observations on the cross-talk between these two organ systemsA series of ABMs are presented extending from the level of intracellular mechanism to clinically observed behavior in the intensive care setting. The ABMs all utilize cell-level agents that encapsulate specific mechanistic knowledge extracted from in vitro experiments. The execution of the ABMs results in a dynamic representation of the multi-scale conceptual models derived from those experiments. These models represent a qualitative means of integrating basic scientific information on acute inflammation in a multi-scale, modular architecture as a means of conceptual model verification that can potentially be used to concatenate, communicate and advance community-wide knowledge.The sheer volume of biomedical research threatens to overwhelm the capacity of individuals to process this information
Calcium Homeostasis in Articular Chondrocytes of Two Different Animal Species  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) is a critical parameter in cellular homeostasis, including articular chondrocytes. Perturbed [Ca2+]i of chondrocytes may be associated with joint disease. The objective of the study was to compare large animal models for investigating Ca2+ homeostasis in chondrocytes. Materials and Methods: The gross anatomy of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) of cattle and sheep was compared, along with the effect of various manoeuvres used to study the mechanisms of Ca2+ homeostasis in chondrocytes from load-bearing areas. The gross anatomy was observed before and after dissection, and internal architecture was examined after sectioning. Cartilage thickness was measured with a digital micrometer. Chondrocyte yield was determined after isolation. Chondrocytes were incubated with Fura-2 and Ca2+i followed in different extracellular conditions. A hypotonic shock (HTS) was used to mimic removal of a load. Results: The results showed that ovids and bovids were skeletally immature and aspects of Ca2+ homeostasis were similar. Ovine chondrocytes had higher resting fluorescence, consistent with elevated resting Ca2+ levels. Results from ion substitution experiments were consistent with a role for Na+/Ca2+ exchange, and swelling-induced Ca2+ enters into the cytoplasm via the plasma membrane and intracellular stores. Conclusions: Ca2+ homeostasis in chondrocytes from both species behaved in a similar manner to HTS and ion substitutions. Differences in resting [Ca2+]i could be associated with species, stage of maturation, or Fura-2 itself and require further investigation. These findings contribute to our understanding of the physiology of articular cartilage in different species, and their potential use as models for studying joint disease in humans.
