Carrasco Manchado, Ana Isabel
Anuario de Estudios Medievales , 2005,
Abstract: This study analyzes the ecclesiastical career of two clergymen, the brothers Francisco de Villalpando and Antonio Garcia de Villalpando. It analyzes also the influence of its relatives: its father, Sancho García de Villalpando, contador mayor, oidor of the king Juan II, oidor and royal counsellor; its uncle, Ruy García of Villalpando, oidor of the Royal Audience, and other relatives that had positions in the Royal Household and Court Trastámara, in Castille and in Aragon. It analyzes, finally, its linkings with the high nobility (lineage of the Osorio and the Velasco). Both clergymen—specially Antonio Garcia de Villalpando, friend of Cardenal Cisneros—, by their intellectual formation, their family origin and their social relations, they caracterize a type of ecclesiastical career.

Abstract: by the end of the middle age, namely in portugal, the interest about the observation and record of nature arose. the portuguese expansion odyssey in the 15th and 16th centuries allowed, from the early beginning, to understand that the natural world was different from that found in old c1assical literature from the greek-roman culture, where the knowledge about asia was very incipient and distorted. the discovery of the maritime pathway for india, in 1498, the subsequent establishment of a government in goa, the creation of several trading posts in strategic points of the indian ocean and the establishment of some local alliances allowed portugal to control the access to the spices and pharmaceutical drugs, very solicited in the european markets. to this indian state, clerics, soldiers, royal servants, physicians, chemists and many others started to arrive. in this context, garcia de orta, with academic background based on the c1assics, went to india as a doctor of the appointed captain-in-chief of the indian sea, where he stayed for the rest of his life. the direct contact with drugs and asian special medicines allowed him to check and correct, as a pioneer, the existing concepts about those merchandises, some of them used, since a very long time, by western medicine, and to show some new products. he left his knowledges recorded in the book colóquios dos simples, e drogas e cousas medicinais da índia, e ...this work constitutes the first european scientific contribute for the knowledge of oriental medicinal plants. after having been known in europe, in latin, the book had an enormous repercussion, until nowadays, being important to medicine, pharmacognosy and botany.

INTRODUCTION: this study aims to determine radiographic and clinical changes obtained with the Garcia’s distractor appliance and its craniofacial, dental and facial cosmetic effects in patients with anterior open bite. METHODS: a prospective clinical quasi-experimental study in 9 subjects, 2 men and 7 women, 7 of them in a phase of active growth with an average age of 11.7 years and 2 adults with an average age of 30 years, in which cephalic radiographs were obtained at the beginning, third and sixth month of treatment. The clinical effect was assessed by measuring monthly the overbite and overjet with a digital gaugeDiscover . In the statistical analysis, descriptive measures were obtained using ANOVA test for repeated measurements to determine changes over time, with a level of significance of 0.05. RESULTS: the radiographic findings showed an increase in the goniac angle in the growing patients; also, an increase in the overbite and a decrease in the overjet were observed, these changes are explained by the int

RIHA Journal , 2011,
Abstract: As early as 1549, i.e. 50 years before Villalpando's famous Ezechiel commentary was published, Jacques Androuet Ducerceau introduced the Salomonic Order in his Exempla arcuum, a series of engravings in which the Salomonic Order is even presented as a part of a canon of orders. For the first time, the article draws attention to this hitherto neglected early example. The author analyses Ducerceau's canon within the broader context of renaissance theories of architecture, treatises on the columnar order, and conceptions of the origins of good or artful architecture, some of which can be traced back to medieval positions. Furthermore, it is argued that the dismissal of the italic orders in favor of the Salomonic order by Ducerceau and others is inextricably linked to the increasing nationalist tendencies of the renaissance.
Profiles in medical courage: the courage to serve and Jamie Garcia
Robbins RA
Southwest Journal of Pulmonary and Critical Care , 2012,
Abstract: Some of our Profiles in Medical Courage series have dealt with the famous, and several such as Barry Marshall and Archie Cochrane are household names in medical circles. However, some physicians, just as courageous, are not so renowned. Jamie Lynn Garcia was one of those who died earlier this year at the age of 52. She was a devoted servant of the poor and founder of the Pomona Community Health Center. Her road to becoming a physician was not straight-forward but her life story was an extraordinary one.

Ambiente e água : An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science , 2010,
Abstract: This study evaluated the performance of two carbon analyzer catalyzers, one with high sensitivity and another with regular sensitivity, used in the determination of carbon concentration in a total organic carbon analyzer – TOC. Its applicability was then evaluated in an environmental monitoring study. They have been constructed two calibration curves with 5 points each, first in the interval of 2 mgL-1 at 10 mgL-1 and the second in the interval of 10 mgL-1 at 100 mgL-1. Both calibration curves showed a high level of linearity that can be observed by R2 values that were 0.9996 for the concentration range of 2 mgL-1 to 10 mgL-1, 0.9999 for the concentration range of 10 mgL-1 to 100 mgL-1, and 0.9999 for the concentration range of 100 mgL-1 to 1.000 mgL-1. The limits of detection and quantification for inorganic carbon were, respectively, 0.003 mgL-1 and 0.009 mgL-1. The limits of detection and quantification for the different catalyzers were also evaluated and showed the following values: regular sensitivity: 0.015 mgL-1 and 0.050 mgL-1, respectively, and high sensitivity; 0.004 mgL-1 and 0.013 mgL-1, respectively. The environmental monitoring was performed in two points (PB1 and PB2) in the Garcia stream. Carbon concentrations were monitored during 24 hours with 2-hour intervals between sampling. It was observed that the concentrations of carbon remained constant throughout the experiment, with the exception of the period between 10:00 am and 04:00 pm, probably due to the input of carbonates and bicarbonates derived from textile companies in the region or still had to the launching of urban sewers. Comparing the average carbon concentration, values of point PB2 were always higher than those observed at point PB1. In high concentration analysis, only irrelevant variations were observed with the use of both catalyzers.
Anuario Musical , 2007,
Abstract: The history of European singing technique, from the Italian origins of the stile rappresentativo and the early Seicento musical drama to the heights of bel canto, seems inextricably related to the classical rhetorical and philosophical theories, later re-interpreted by the humanist and rationalist authors. Manuel García’s Tratado completo del arte del canto inherits this tradition and contributes to it with every single observation or musical example included in this eminently practical work.
