Superparasitism in the Fruit Fly Parasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and the Implications for Mass Rearing and Augmentative Release

Insects , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/insects3040900
Abstract: Superparasitism, a strategy in which a female lays eggs in/on a previously parasitized host, was attributed in the past to the inability of females to discriminate between parasitized and non-parasitized hosts. However, superparasitism is now accepted as an adaptive strategy under specific conditions. In fruit fly parasitoids, superparasitism has mainly been studied as concerns the new association between Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and the Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae), wherein this phenomenon is a common occurrence in both mass rearing and field conditions. Studies of this species have shown that moderate levels of superparasitism result in a female-biased sex ratio and that both massreared and wild females superparasitize their hosts without detrimental effects on offspring demographic parameters, including longevity and fecundity. These studies suggest that superparasitism in this species is advantageous. In this paper, we review superparasitism in D. longicaudata, discuss these findings in the context of mass rearing and field releases and address the possible implications of superparasitism in programs employing augmentative releases of parasitoids for the control of fruit fly pests.
Montoya-del-Corte,Javier; Farías-Martínez,Gabriela María;
Innovar , 2011,
Abstract: this research looks at the particularities of an innovative educational intervention carried out among students in the field of "financial auditing" at two universities in spain and mexico. the objective is to show how, through collaborative work by the students in a virtual learning environment, they can develop certain professional abilities emphasized by ifac (2008) while, at the same time, acquiring specific relevant knowledge. the analysis is based on evaluation of the students' perception and of evidence of learning. the results show the effectiveness of the intervention in terms of the development of abilities and generation of knowledge among students from both countries, although certain difficulties arise that will need to be taken into consideration in future experiences.

Revista mexicana de investigación educativa , 2010,
Abstract: this article presents a study that explored the reflective qualities that teachers in training develop or strengthen by making electronic portfolios of their work, in contrast with teachers who use other media to record their experiences. the reflective qualities were constructs grouped into personal, interpersonal, institutional, and social dimensions. the methodology used was the study of multiple cases, and the findings indicate that using an electronic portfolio of work, supported by technology for interaction in discussion groups, favors the development and strengthening of the reflective qualities of the interpersonal dimension, while sharing evidence in files and images facilitates the teachers' comprehension of their teaching practice and students, their learning process, and their decision-making.

Fedra: Query Processing for SPARQL Federations with Divergence
Gabriela Montoya,Hala Skaf-Molli,Pascal Molli,Maria-Esther Vidal
Computer Science , 2014,
Abstract: Data replication and deployment of local SPARQL endpoints improve scalability and availability of public SPARQL endpoints, making the consumption of Linked Data a reality. This solution requires synchronization and specific query processing strategies to take advantage of replication. However, existing replication aware techniques in federations of SPARQL endpoints do not consider data dynamicity. We propose Fedra, an approach for querying federations of endpoints that benefits from replication. Participants in Fedra federations can copy fragments of data from several datasets, and describe them using provenance and views. These descriptions enable Fedra to reduce the number of selected endpoints while satisfying user divergence requirements. Experiments on real-world datasets suggest savings of up to three orders of magnitude.
Efficient Query Processing for SPARQL Federations with Replicated Fragments

Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: Low reliability and availability of public SPARQL endpoints prevent real-world applications from exploiting all the potential of these querying infras-tructures. Fragmenting data on servers can improve data availability but degrades performance. Replicating fragments can offer new tradeoff between performance and availability. We propose FEDRA, a framework for querying Linked Data that takes advantage of client-side data replication, and performs a source selection algorithm that aims to reduce the number of selected public SPARQL endpoints, execution time, and intermediate results. FEDRA has been implemented on the state-of-the-art query engines ANAPSID and FedX, and empirically evaluated on a variety of real-world datasets.
Herrera Torres,María del Carmen; Cruz Burguete,Jorge Luis; Robledo Hernández,Gabriela Patricia; Montoya Gómez,Guillermo;
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892006000200001
Abstract: objective: to assess the determining role of financial situation and gender relations on maternal mortality among indigenous women in chiapas, mexico. methods: a quantitative/qualitative study was performed by means of a survey of 158 families, as well as in-depth interviews of persons linked to cases of maternal death, community leaders from throughout the region, and focal groups composed of traditional birth attendants. results: decision-making surrounding women's health within the household is a critical problem because it is entirely in the hands of the husband and his relatives. in cases of high-risk pregnancy or birth, options for seeking care outside the community become limited, so that 48.7% of all obstetric cases are assisted by traditional birth attendants, 45.3% by relatives, and 6% by the mate. the problem is compounded by the high level of marginalization and very low human development index that characterize the region under study, by women's exclusion from the ownership of goods, including land, and by the fact that 97.7% of women only speak indigenous languages. conclusions: gender inequities within indigenous families, together with a household economy that does not cover the basic necessities, are among the factors that keep women from receiving the necessary care during their reproductive processes. because of the low socioeconomic status these women have, decisions surrounding care during pregnancy, birth, and the puerperium take a large toll on their health and their lives.

Pensamiento Psicológico , 2012,
Abstract: Objetivo.
