Abstract: OBJETIVO: Identificar as repercuss es do ruído da unidade de terapia intensiva neonatal sobre as m es, recém-nascidos e intera es com o filho e profissionais de saúde, a partir da percep o materna. OBJECTIVE: To identify repercussion of noise in the neonatal intensive care unit on mothers, newborns and on interactions of neonates with healthcare professional from the mothers' perspective. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in the neonatal intensive care unit. The study population was composed by 95 mothers. Data were collected using formularies. The statistical analysis was descriptive. RESULTS: Mothers' perception of noise in the unit caused repercussion on neonates such as agitation, cry, irritability among other. Mothers' also reported to have headache, agitation and tendency to cry, which led them to touch less and speak softly with their babies. CONCLUSION: Repercussions of noise perceived by mothers on themselves and on babies' behavior and physical changes were associated with difficulties of mothers to keep attention and to interact with healthcare professionals.
TISs-ST: a web server to evaluate polymorphic translation initiation sites and their reflections on the secretory targets

Abstract: An efficient web-based tool entitled TISs-ST (Translation Initiation Sites and Secretory Targets) evaluates putative translation initiation sites and indicates the prediction of a signal peptide of the protein encoded from this site. The TISs-ST web server is freely available to both academic and commercial users and can be accessed at http://ipe.cbmeg.unicamp.br/pub/TISs-ST webcite.The program can be used to evaluate alternative translation initiation site consensus with user-specified sequences, based on their composition or on many position weight matrix models. TISs-ST provides analytical and visualization tools for evaluating the periodic frequency, the consensus pattern and the total information content of a sequence data set. A search option allows for the identification of signal peptides from predicted proteins using the PrediSi software.Translation by cytosolic ribosomes generally occurs at the first AUG in the transcript. However, in eukaryotic mRNAs, efficient recognition of an AUG codon as a translation initiation site (TIS) depends on several factors, such as the nucleotide sequence that flanks the site [1-3]. There is evidence that the context surrounding the initiation codon contributes to the control of translational initiation [4]. The sequence context of the first AUG codon, in particular that part located in the untranslated region, may modulate the efficiency with which it is recognized as a translation initiation codon [5]. If the first initiation codon lies in a suitable context, protein synthesis will be started. When the context is less than favorable, most of the protein synthesis will start at the next downstream AUG codon [6]. Moreover, other structural features of the mRNA are considered important for the efficiency of the translation initiation at a specific AUG codon, such as: the proximity of AUG to the 5' end, the secondary structure upstream and downstream from the AUG codon, the leader sequence length and the multiple upstream AUG
Pipeline for macro- and microarray analyses
Vicentini, R.;Menossi, M.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X2006005000089
Abstract: the pipeline for macro- and microarray analyses (pmma) is a set of scripts with a web interface developed to analyze dna array data generated by array image quantification software. pmma is designed for use with single- or double-color array data and to work as a pipeline in five classes (data format, normalization, data analysis, clustering, and array maps). it can also be used as a plugin in the bioarray software environment, an open-source database for array analysis, or used in a local version of the web service. all scripts in pmma were developed in the perl programming language and statistical analysis functions were implemented in the r statistical language. consequently, our package is a platform-independent software. our algorithms can correctly select almost 90% of the differentially expressed genes, showing a superior performance compared to other methods of analysis. the pipeline software has been applied to 1536 expressed sequence tags macroarray public data of sugarcane exposed to cold for 3 to 48 h. pmma identified thirty cold-responsive genes previously unidentified in this public dataset. fourteen genes were up-regulated, two had a variable expression and the other fourteen were down-regulated in the treatments. these new findings certainly were a consequence of using a superior statistical analysis approach, since the original study did not take into account the dependence of data variability on the average signal intensity of each gene. the web interface, supplementary information, and the package source code are available, free, to non-commercial users at http://ipe.cbmeg.unicamp.br/pub/pmma.

Abstract: the objective of the study was to quantify the effect of nitrogen on the winter growth of the lowland pasture pampa deprimida) near chascomús, buenos aires province, argentina. in the lowland pampa the forage growth, dominated by cool season species lolium multiflorum, bromus spp. and stipa spp., is limited in winter by a severe deficiency of available nitrogen. using a randomized block with three replicates, six fertilization treatments were evaluated: n0, n50, n100, n150, n200 and n250 kg n ha-1 with urea (46% n), applied on 12/08/1997. the accumulation of forage was assessed on the dates 20/09, 29/09, 08/10, 20/10, 30/10 and 04/11 of 1997 by cutting 5 m2 of the plots. the statistical comparisons were made via variance analysis and the growth rates determined via linear regression. nitrogen fertilization significantly (p > 0.05) increased the forage accumulation, achieving 7114 kg dm ha-1 with the n250 dosage at the end of the experimental period, a result that did not differ (p < 0.05) from n200 and n150. n0 showed the lowest forage yield (2433kg dm ha-1), a result that differed from the rest of the dosages utilized (p<0,05). the growth rates for n0 and n150 were 29.44 ± 5.29 and 81.36 ± 9.62 kg dm ha-1 d-1, respectively. the apparent response to the accumulation of forage was obtained using a decreasing return model, being maximal for n0 and minimal for n250 with 52.8 and 18.7 kg dm, respectively. the results showed that the n available in the soil was below the potential growth demands of the natural grassland.

Abstract: in this study, we evaluated whether human serum and lipoproteins, especially high-density lipoprotein (hdl), affected serum amyloid a (saa)-induced cytokine release. we verified the effects of saa on thp-1 cells in serum-free medium compared to medium containing human serum or lipoprotein-deficient serum. saa-induced tumour necrosis factor-alpha (tnf-α) production was higher in the medium containing lipoprotein-deficient serum than in the medium containing normal human serum. the addition of hdl inhibited the saa-induced tnf-α release in a dose-dependent manner. this inhibitory effect was specific for hdl and was not affected by low-density lipoprotein or very low-density lipoprotein. in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, the inhibitory effect of hdl on tnf-α production induced by saa was less pronounced. however, this effect was significant when hdl was added to lipoprotein-deficient medium. in addition, a similar inhibitory effect was observed for interleukin-1 beta release. these findings confirm the important role of hdl and support our previous hypothesis that hdl inhibits the effects of saa during saa transport in the bloodstream. moreover, the hdl-induced reduction in the proinflammatory activity of saa emphasizes the involvement of saa in diseases, such as atherosclerosis, that are characterized by low levels of hdl.
